Licenses for photos. In my opinion, it is worth making up our mind

Community and ForumInsects imagesLicenses for photos. In my opinion, it is worth making up our mind

PVOzerski, 01.02.2010 10:11

I suggest that you decide on the legal status of photo materials posted here, primarily in terms of their possible use by other people. This question is important, since the forum periodically reports that photos borrowed from here are found on other sites.

I don't see anything wrong with such borrowings (although it's easy for me to say: I haven't posted smile.gifanything myself yet ), but it's clear that this probably doesn't suit everyone (especially, apparently, the lack of information about authorship). Therefore, I make a suggestion: explicitly specify the conditions under which posted photos can be used by third parties. Although these conditions are described "briefly", in my opinion, they are not very clear and, most importantly, unexpectedly (perhaps even for the authors of these conditions themselves) strict: free use is allowed only for non-commercial purposes, unless the author has indicated something else. The problem is that this text doesn't catch the eye and is published only in Russian (and people who don't speak Russian can also find pictures).

Therefore, I suggest that you designate the" default license " for the uploaded material (that is, the current one, if its author does not explicitly specify other conditions) from among the well-known ones all over the world, prominently post it on the site and consider the materials posted starting from a certain date as falling under it (and what to do with the already published content?). laid out - I can't imagine).

If you formulate the conditions, then I would first advise you to look here: http://creativecommons.org
And here it is: http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html

The question is certainly interesting, at the macro club I will try to raise a question on this topic.
It's just that really many "pulling" people don't seem to mind and indicate the authorship and ask the author, but the question immediately arises how and who to ask. If such information is not clearly visible, then not everyone has the time and desire to dig deep. The picture can also be found in Google, the site is Russian-speaking... it is clear that nothing is clear.
In my opinion, there is something like a license for flickr.com each photo has a license by default and you can write your own something). I really didn't dig deep, and I'm not good at English, but this question can be studied...

Thank you for bringing up the topic. This is really a very lively question. In my case, the site indicates the resource from which the image was taken, but no links to authorship (although all the data on the forum is available). You could write to me "in the personal account" and I would give them a picture in a higher resolution. Probably the question here is elementary decency (this site has completely lost its authority on my part) and I have no idea what to do here.

And the EXIF (summary) is even wiped!!!
That's what it's come to! I hope that the author of this site still reads the forum.
Here are two files for comparison (the first one was downloaded from that site, and the other from the forum).

Well, you can use mine in any non-commercial projects, provided that the authorship is indicated. Well, it is advisable for me to send a link.

That's what I'm talking about (I'm not sorry). But when without attribution-outrageous.

Well, in my case, not children at all (grants are received for copyright apparently frown.gif) Here's a look: http://insects.botgard.uran.ru/ . That they do not have their own M. urussovi in the Urals (the species is mostly Siberian), it is mandatory to insert the Moscow region one?

put the authorship on the picture, it is better if there is an insect on the working surfaces, and you will be happy. otherwise, you will never save your copyright - they like to steal from us.

Well, this is also not an option (as Rosphoto does). It is probably necessary to count on decency after all (although it is hard to believe in it) confused.gif

It's nice that sometimes you can negotiate. At one time, the Tula Exotarium, without any notice or reference to authorship, posted my photo of the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg ( http://entomology.ru/main_menu/news/20060927.htm ). After my request to indicate the authorship, the photo was simply removed. However, until now, when searching for "Tula exotarium zin" in Yandex, it pops up smile.gif

So I'm thinking, let me write them a little letter. Not now (angry now).

Another example: in 2009, an entire Entomology Info site was stolen (and a number of other resources from the People - I wrote about this: http://entomology.ru/main_menu/news/20090900.htm - at the very bottom). After contacting the hosting service that hosted the resource of bad people (and they did not respond to emails), our sites were removed from there.

I am withdrawing my question about M. urussovi (they sent me a letter of apology and signed the photo on the website). For which I am grateful to them! jump.gif

There is a civilized form of interaction. Everyone who posts their photos on the forum provides them for review to a large audience. If the photo moves to another resource, the audience of viewers increases. This raises the question of authorship. Normal solution of the issue when the author of the photo is requested and a request is made to use the photo on the site, and (or) provide a photo of higher quality. With a subsequent indication of authorship and, in some cases, acknowledgements. I think very few people will have a negative answer. I have personal experience with /www.flora.crimea.ua/ . The site authors are polite and correct.

Example of plagiarism (I accidentally came across it):

Proctos ' forum topic (http://molbiol.ru/forums/index.php?showtopic=98453&hl=)

and...
screenshot from another site:

It's cool to illustrate domestic agricultural entomology with an African view. And I doubt that web designers turned to Proctos for permission.
