Fauna and flora of Sakhalin

Community and ForumInsects imagesFauna and flora of Sakhalin

Ольга Титова, 29.12.2014 12:58

So, at the suggestion of Oleg Pekarsky, I am starting a new topic "Fauna and flora of Sakhalin". Thank you very much to everyone who helped identify insects: dear G. A. Grigoriev, Morozzz, John-ST, barko, Djon, okoem, insectamo, scarabee, Gennadich, Collector, fraudatrix, Konung, Gennady Schemberger, Alexanor, Nick444444, Bad Den, svm2. You are a good, friendly, well-coordinated team, although you are located in different parts of the world.

If anyone has any interesting information about the species, please share it with them, indicating the source of information. With observations, too, if you're not sorry. There is an idea to publish a brochure for schoolchildren "Insects of the Kholmsky district". I myself live in Kholmsk, Sakhalin region, and all my photos were taken in this area. My daughter is in the 6th grade, and it was she who "infected" me with insects. And now I want to" infect " these computerized schoolchildren, which means I need to formulate it briefly, succinctly and fascinatingly.
And forumchane will be able to look at Sakhalin.

So, in a good way!

1. Here is one of my daughter's works "How dragonflies drink". If anyone can help us identify them, we will be grateful.
Yellow dragonfly-female reed rocker (Aeshna juncea).

How do dragonflies drink?

I love watching dragonflies. In the hot days of July, these amazing insects come to the city pond either singly or in pairs. My eyes run away from their crazy flight. Even the camera in moving object mode can't capture them. First of all, they attract beautiful blue with black spots, large dragonflies. If you look closely, you will notice that not all dragonflies fly so fast. Here is one nondescript, more gray dragonfly sat more. The photo clearly shows that one of her wings is torn. Apparently, the beauties not only play, but also fight.

And once I noticed a dragonfly dip its belly into the water. I thought that was how she drank. After all, I've never seen dragonflies drink through their mouths. I found in a book that female yellow dragonflies produce their offspring in this way. But how dragonflies drink water is not said.

Identified Kharkovbut
Enallagma (boreale) circulatum, male
Aeshna juncea or Ae. crenata (I will not undertake to determine exactly from this picture), female
Libellula quadrimaculata, male
Ophiogomphus obscurus, male
Libellula quadrimaculata, male

We grow Sakhalin velvet at home. A question for entomologists – for whom?
Sakhalin velvet-sem. Routines.
Light-loving, soil-demanding trees with deep root systems. Velvet blooms in June, but if the weather is dry, then its buds fall unopened. Some trees develop male flowers, while others develop female flowers. There are usually more trees with female flowers in the forest. These trees are pollinated by bees, which are attracted by the abundance of nectar and pollen. During flowering, the dull hum of bees can be heard from the crown of velvet trees. Velvet honey has excellent quality, pleasant to the taste and very aromatic. Bitter velvet berries with five achenes are readily eaten by forest birds-woodpeckers, thrushes.
Amur velvet is a valuable cork plant, its bark is not inferior to the bark of cork oak. Velvet wood has a beautiful texture and color, very durable, does not rot. It is used for making furniture and souvenirs.
On the streets of Kholmsk there are Amur velvet and Sakhalin velvet, which is listed in the Red Book of the Sakhalin Region as a rare species.
Thanks to the beautiful openwork crown, velvet trees are widely used in urban landscaping, they grow well in parks, squares, along roads.

Perhaps you want to feed them to the caterpillars of large sailboats that you have already flying around the streets there? smile.gif

Exactly, but we want to not only feed them, but also observe them. The caterpillars of the tail-bearer Maak and the tail-bearer bianor have never been seen, only butterflies. And Sakhalin velvet is the only forage plant of Maak.

There is, but very little. I'll scan it over time. That's why I took up scoops. The forum helped me identify almost everyone. About one indefinite say that it is a sawfly. But okoem claims"As far as the number of legs can be considered, this is a caterpillar. The head also looks more like a caterpillar, at least from this angle. Such a bright yellow head color and mottled coloration, by the way, are characteristic of caterpillars of the genus Calyptra." Maybe the whole world and determine what kind of endem on Sakhalin. I applied to the Faculty of Biology in Vladivostok, but they said they didn't know. Found 28.08.2014 13 hours, eating grass, which is in the photo.

Especially for Oleg Pekarsky. There are only two pages in the book about the scoop. There is also a Family of Bears.Scanning a book is a hassle. If you find it interesting , I will gradually scan it. I'm on night duty today, and I also work during the holidays. She was active in spotting butterflies when she had time off. Now I won't be here often: I promised my child skis, a trip to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, and a job.

In general, not an easy case. I was talking to a friend who is an expert in scoops. While as a version-caterpillar Calyptra sp. at a young age (since the adult caterpillars of all three species of this genus registered in the Far East look different). But let's wait, maybe someone will say something else.

I think that in the first three photos the tail-bearer Maaka, in the next-Bianor.But the angles are such that it is difficult for me to understand. Please help me.
In Klitin's book, the Kholmsky district is not marked as an area of tail finders ' finds. However, the tail-carriers Maaka and Bianor fly in and around Kholmsk every year. Sometimes they can be found more often, sometimes less often. Mostly I noticed these large butterflies in August. It is possible that this is due to the location of the city on the coast. In July, fogs are often on the coast, and in August the highest temperatures are in Kholmsk and fogs are less frequent than in July. And this happened on clear, hot days. I noticed tail-bearers both in my garden, on the outskirts of the city, and in the city itself, where they preferred green corners of quiet courtyards, fenced off by houses from the road. I think there is not a single Kholm resident whose attention would not be attracted by this large butterfly-beauty.
On August 31, 2010, my daughter and I noticed a tailbiter on a sun-warmed dirt road near the house. He sat motionless for about five minutes while his daughter ran after the camera. I even thought that the butterfly was crushed by a car or a cat. When my daughter ran up, she took off without waiting for the photo shoot. Since then, my Elena knows that it is better to sneak up on butterflies. What is it that attracts tailbearers so much to the warm ground? Does Mother Earth attract any creature with her warmth? Klitin noted that the tail-bearers sit on wet ground, and in our case the ground was dry.

From such angles, it is not clear whether it is a caterpillar or a sawfly. As a working version, I can also offer a thick-head caterpillar.

PapiliomachaonLinnaeus, 1758
For the swallowtail, as for most butterflies, the only food is the nectar of the flowers. In June, you can see this butterfly on a bright yellow dandelion, in July – on a bright red light, so we call the orange-red hawk (Hieracium aurantiacum), or on the Pennsylvania lily (Daurian) (Lilium pensylvanicum Ker-Gawl. (dahuricum Ker-Gawl.). In the Kholmsky district, there are frequent encounters with swallowtail and on the sea coast. So on July 1, 2012, in Polyakovo, Kholmsky district, a swallowtail was attracted by a sea cabbage washed up on the shore. And in the city itself, thanks to the abundance of flower beds, the swallowtail pleases the residents of Kholm with its flight.
The mating season of these representatives of the sailboat family occurs in the Kholmsky district in June. During this period, the flight of swallowtails is difficult to catch, the butterflies either chase each other, or dance in pairs.

Perhaps it came from an old book by Yu. Arakcheeva "In the land of blue swallowtails "(about insects of Primorye).

I am very grateful to you and okoem, because my first wish was to start breeding a caterpillar, but my fellow travelers were in a hurry and said that it was a sawfly. I believed it, but I took a picture anyway. It's been bothering me ever since. In this breakup, I also found Calliteara pseudobietis (identified by G. A. Grigoriev), already in 2006, which is not listed in the Sinev and Dubatolova catalog, but is present in Japan.

Calliteara pseuda bietis Butler, 1885 is listed in the Catalog of Lepidoptera of Russia under the editorship of S. Yu.Blue for the 38th region, that is, for Sakhalin. It was also cited for Sakhalin in 2012 (article " T. A. Trofimov Review of species of the genus Calliteara Butler, 1881 (Lepidoptera Lymantriidae) Russian Federation with comments on their taxonomy. Eversmania Issue 31-32.") based on collections made in the second half of August 1975. The place where six males of this species were collected is designated as: O.Sakhalin, Pyatirechye, 50 km west of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. So your find is not the first, but it is no less interesting! Can I ask you to post your photo of a caterpillar of this species and specify the location and date of the image?

Indeed, Sinev has the species Calliteara pseudobietis in his catalog. I apologize for your inattention. Found in the Yablochny raspadke of the Sakhalin region, Kholmsky district, near the Tselebnaya River 27.09.2006 12-40. And what will the name sound like in Russian?

T. A. Trofimova
Review of species of the genus Calliteara Butler, 1881 (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) Russian Federation with comments on their taxonomy.

resume. Currently, the fauna of Calliteara Butler (1881) is represented by 8 species on the territory of Russia. Two species, Calliteara axutha (Collenette, 1934) and Calliteara solitaria (Staudinger, 1892), stat. rev., comb. n., are listed for the first time in the Russian fauna list. The status of Dasychira solitaria Staudinger, 1892, described from Askold Island, was revised and restored to a species, and its lectotype from the ZMHU collection was designated. In order to stabilize the nomenclature situation, the following lectotypes were identified: Dasychira pudibunda ab. concolor Staudinger, 1871 and Dasychira pudica Staudinger, 1887 from the ZMHU collection. A new synonymy was established: Calliteara conjuncta (Wileman, 1911) = Dasychira phloeobaresCollenette, 1938, syn. n. Differences in the external morphology and genital structures of Calliteara pudibunda(Linnaeus, 1758) and Calliteara pseudabietis Butler, 1885 were confirmed by molecular studies. Bybl. 47.

I downloaded Y. Arakcheev's book "In the Land of Blue Swallowtails". Thank you all.

This species does not have a Russian name, but since it is very close to the European Calliteara pudibunda (Linnaeus, 1758) and the caterpillar also has a red "tail", it can probably also be called a "Red Tail".

The situation is the same on Sakhalin. Arakcheev's book was published in 1985, but already in the 70s their tail-bearers Bianor and Maak were called not even blue, but simply swallowtails. And against their background, not only did they not notice the swallowtail itself, but also Xut.I remember looking at it as a child, because it is so unusual. And now it may not be on Sakhalin, I haven't seen it for sure in the last 20 years.

It may be Phragmatobia amurensis. The light caterpillars from the previous posts may be some kind of Spilarctia

In general, bears are quite easy to grow, they are unpretentious. They eat almost everything, but it is most convenient to feed them burdock or plantain.

I'll try, I'd rather have summer.

I saw this page and decided that you can also upload your photos taken during a trip to Sakhalin in July 2009. B.ch. entomofauna i flora [Entomofauna and flora]. It doesn't seem to be very relevant for reports anymore, and I don't really like the word itself-there's enough of this stuff at work. Maybe someone will be interested in this.
I went with a colleague, taking a vacation, for the whole of July. Initially, the plans also included the Kuril Islands (Kunashir and Shikotan), and passes there were ordered, but, unfortunately, the weather made its own adjustments. Yuzhny met us with a drizzle and a temperature of +10 degrees – for July, say, not quite comfortable. I couldn't help but think of a song from the 60s: "What can I tell you about Sakhalin? On the island of normal weather" entomologists have a somewhat different norm. And that July 2009 was even called anomalous by the locals.
After the flight, we stayed with friends and colleagues, recovered from the flight and changed belts, took a ride to see the city's surroundings, to the beach in the direction of Okhotsk, then to Korsakov. It was planned to live in tents, but the locals began to actively frighten us with the ubiquitous and ferocious bears that had lost all fear (by the way, they saw only one small bear running across the road from the car in a month).
A total of 3 locations were visited in the south of the island: Ostromysovka (35 km north of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk), Sokol (30 km North) and Shebunino (90 km South).
Then directly to the photo – if you have defined something incorrectly or did not define it, please sign it, people who know. What I defined for myself is that objects are not photogenic (a small thing) and few people would be interested in them. It was still taken on a soap dish, so don't blame me, I chose what was better.
