Most of all, it looks like a hybrid, although the rear light spot, round as in sakhalinensis, is confusing.

Yes, yes... confused.gif

They asked Alexander Vertyankin for help in identifying the problem."This is not Lesnoy, but Sakhalin. It has a light trim, while the forest one should have a black one. "

And again the Upper Lake in the vicinity of Chekhov. Fishing failed, but new butterflies. The site didn't identify the fathead. Marigold was first identified as Lethe diana (Butler, 1866). Hydrangea petiolaris blooming on the tree is a petiolate hydrangea. I don't know the bird. July 24, 2015.

I wonder why Pericallia matronula is also called the mistress. Perhaps because she isn't afraid of a human. I spent three whole hours photographing moths with her, and she was not afraid, sitting under my feet, sitting on my hands. Or because she considers herself the mistress of the weather-huddled in the rain, although others sat on the wall under the awning. And in the morning, to my amazement, the Pericallia matronula slept in full view of everyone.

Bright dippers are usually venomous, and this is reflected in their behavior: they are less pecked by birds (I don't know about frogs, who are big fans of watching prey at the night screen side by side with an entomologistsmile.gif) .

Indeed, the frogs also went to the night school with me. But the most interesting thing is that my cat is interested in butterflies. One of the flying beauties outsmarted me. The butterfly flew into the light, teased me with its dancing flight, and flew away under the canopy of the night. And I thought that now he would calm down and sit down like the others, that's when I would take a picture. The next night, just as I've lit the lamp, my Musya comes in. And after half an hour, I look, she catches someone in the grass. Came closer - my stranger, who turned out to be Euthrix potatoria. And the motionless host bears were tangled under her paws.

It is not clear where the Russian name came from. Poking around on the Internet, I found only one (de facto) definition of the word "Matron" wandering from dictionary to dictionary:
"1) Matron - - among the ancient Romans — a respectable married woman, the mother of a family. Later — a respectable middle-aged woman.
2) Matrona-the honorific title of a married woman in Rome."

But if matrona is also the hostess, then matrona is the hostess, since "ula" is a diminutive affectionate suffix (well, as far as my superficial knowledge of Latin allows smile.gif)

I only came across her once, a broken female on the shore of Lake Baikal smile.gif

Yes, also, in the very first photo you have a toad, not a frog smile.gif

Continuation of the walk to Lake Superior. Aralia bloomed, Actinidia kolomikta is tied Actinidia kolomikta or as we call kish-mouse, another indefinite thick-head. Marigolds from the path darted under the canopy of the forest and froze, after 5-7 minutes it began to rain.

I don't think Gonoclostera timoniorum will visit rose flowers on its own. If only by accident or with someone's help ))
Just like furcula, though.

Don't think I'm boring, but for photographing some different-colored flowers in the natural environment, they are not suitable, because not everyone eats on them (and they do, in general). Scoops-yes, tufts-no.
Here, a twig of some tree, a piece of bark - more plausible.

One of the butterflies was removed from the stamens under the petals. I wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't been cutting roses for the holiday. It was raining in the evening, maybe she was hiding. The second one, indeed, fell out of the jar after the night collection, and then I photographed it. I was sitting at the top, but I wanted to take a normal picture. I was surprised to find myself in a rose. Over the years, I've only seen it on the pink radiol. I'm not offended by your comments, do it, I'll only be grateful.

August 1, 2015. Mud volcano hike.

Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk mud volcano is located 18 km northwest of the capital Sakhalin and is most accessible to residents and visitors alike. In Russia, similar volcanoes can be seen on the Taman Peninsula and here. The last eruption of the volcano was registered relatively recently-scientists observed its active activity in June 2011 and attributed this phenomenon to a large-scale disaster in Japan that occurred in March of the same year. As a result of the eruption of mud masses, gases and water, a new field was formed, in the central part of which there is a cauldron-shaped griffin, whose jets rise above the earth's surface.
The volcanic field is devoid of vegetation and seems to be raised above the surrounding area, its shape is close to a circle. It has "breathing" craters. They rise only 20-40 cm above the ground. There are no more than twenty of them. These formations look like miniature hills with depressions at the top," in which dirty slime boils". The temperature of the mud mass is not higher than the temperature of the surrounding soil. In addition to the last eruption, two more were recorded-in 1959 and 2002. During which the volcano spewed mud columns that reached several tens of meters.

In addition to the volcano, it is interesting to see the remains of the Japanese railway, which was built from 1925 to 1928. It left mounds, tunnels, rails and a snow protection gallery. Even the traffic lights have been preserved. Rails are used as pillars supporting the roof of the gallery. Many of them are branded by manufacturers. Among them, produced from 1884 to 1940 in the United States, Great Britain and Japan. http://sakhalin.shamora.info/%D0%AE%D0%B6%...BA%D0%B0%D0%BD/

A short stop on Chernye Peski when returning from Chekhov. Even on the pass, you can see the fields overgrown with continuous hogweed. As schoolchildren, we went to these fields to collect carrots, which were grown by the Kostroma state farm. But vegetables were no longer grown, and their place was quickly taken by hogweed. They flew dark daytime ones, while they were not traveling at night, and in the evening they were not there. But a lot of birds.
The sand in this place is really dark. If you take a handful in your hand, you can see black particles, which give the effect of blackness. Flounder bites well especially on a simple worm. While they were cooking the soup, only one kind of butterfly flew in, probably a firefly. This is a favorite holiday destination, although it is not very easy to get there, even with cats, vacationers come.

A trip to the hot springs near the village. Nogliki (north of Sakhalin)

The highway runs along the eastern coast of the Sea of Okhotsk. In the area of Eastern herons and seals, from a distance they look like rocks in the sea. According to a friend, there were few herons before and they lived in the swamp. Now there are many different ones and they have moved to the sea. There was even mackerel fish.
There are foxes on the highway at night: red, dark and mottled-a mixture of the first two. we saw an owl. Lots of chipmunks. Some of the insects at the springs are beetles and some kind of butterfly. Birds - tits and nuthatches.
Lingonberries are still ripe. But we ate gonobobel, as the locals call blueberries, the shape of its berries is oblong.

Hot springs in the area of Nogliki village are different. Several with a water temperature of about 40 degrees. There, even frogs take baths(in the photo, the finger points to the frog). In one-45-47 degrees, this source is an American working on the shelf, a few years ago finished with siding. There is also one where the water temperature is 70 degrees. By the last two, there are a lot of people, you can wait for your turn for two hours, people treat various sores. But early in the morning and evening-no one. Everyone comes as a savage: with their own tents and water. there is no spring nearby, there is mineral water everywhere, even a shower with healing water. You can drink it, but you can't drink much. People set up parking spots. Next year we decided to bring wooden hangers and benches to the houses above the springs. Everyone does what they can. There is dirt, so the shower and built.
In the north, shrubby mountain ash grows, it tastes sweet.

September 2 – the day of the end of the Second World War.
The trip to the springs passed through the Smirnykhovsky district, where the fighting in August 1945 was particularly fierce. Monuments to the fallen Soviet soldiers and a memorial to the memory of all the victims of World War II have been erected in the area of the former Kharamitogorsk fortified area. At the 50th parallel, Japanese defensive fortifications remained.

Irony about September 2 is not appropriate. I can add "local history"to the flora and fauna. I just don't have enough time for everything. The trip and date matched. They recaptured a corner of nature, the flora and fauna of which is in question.

The trip to the hot springs took 3 days-1200 km . On the first day, 600 km in 14 hours with two stops. The road to Smyrny is excellent, then there is a dirt road with holes, only asphalt near the bridges. We drove in the dark, fog - the speed is not more than 50 km. Therefore, the road back was divided into two days. What I want to note is the entrances to the settlements: not a soul, but the lights are on. Before Poronaysk, you can drive down to the river, but then it is difficult to stop-there are no exits. We'll take it into account for next year. We went out on mushrooms. Not far from the road is a bucket of mushrooms and butter for half an hour. White buttermilk grows in the center of Sakhalin - I haven't seen such plants in the south. It is pleasant to walk through the forest, there is no bamboo. Near Ozernoye sell crabs: bottom, royal, etc. Berry-red and blueberry axillary. Mushrooms-white, buttermilk, ababki, chanterelles.

August 6, 2015-walk to the Lysaya hill. Krupnoglazki Lopinga achine already circled. But the marigold diana Lethe diana and black Japanese Erebia niphonica in all its glory. At the top of the hill there is a view of all directions of the world. In the west - the waters of the Tatar Strait, in the northwest - the seaport (ferry leaves), then the fishing port 0496. To the north is Mount Berniset. In the northeast-reservoir 0498. In the east - hills. In the south-east - Polyakovsky lake 0484, the water was drained in connection with the repair of the dam. Swallowtails also flew, but they didn't want to be filmed. Danaida sita flew in from the north-east. The sight is amazing, it's a pity that I didn't even sit down.
On the slope of the hill I met a patch of thyme, strawberries everywhere. Finally, the steppe jaundice Colias erate.

There are nights when butterflies don't fly, but beetles do. The top two photos are September 4 Nicrophorus maculifrons, I think. The other three are on September 9.

August 30 trip to the pear garden raspadok Yablochny Kholmsky district. Pears are tart. The garden was planted by immigrants in the 50s. This year's crop failure. But attracted the attention of a tropical spider coloring, angloptera.
Polygonia c-album is named for the light stroke in the center of the hind wings, similar to the letter C. Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands are home to the subspecies Polygonia c-album hamigera Bult., which is distinguished by a larger tooth on the outer edge of the hind wings.
I noticed that the black Japanese bird Erebia niphonica has not only three dark brown eyes on top of the front wings on a yellow-brown sling, but also a brown spot. Can someone tell me what this means?

On July 18, 2015, near the village of Pionery, Kholmsky district, I met a beautiful moth. The forum helped to determine-Crypsicometa incertaria (Leech, 1891). The other day Evgeny Anatolyevich Belyaev confirmed it.
It lives in Russia only on Sakhalin. It is associated with the forage plant of a butterfly in the caterpillar stage - holly gorodchatyy. Crypsicometa incertaria is also found in Japan and China. The species is semi-subtropical, as is its forage plant - evergreen holly, too, mostly subtropical. There are no more holly trees in Russia, except on Sakhalin and the Southern Kuril Islands. Very few in central Sikhote-Alin (but without accompanying butterflies), and in the Caucasus.

There were more than one holly tree growing nearby, about five meters away, and not only a small town with black fruit, but also with red fruit.

My daughter noticed that the name contains the word comet. They began to dig further: cry - to scream or cry, psi - a parapsychological phenomenon. In the forest, the butterfly really looked like an unearthly object: beauty in general once, unearthly colors two, magical feelings from the meeting three. In fact, the name of the butterfly should be read differently: Crypsi means hidden, implicit, hidden. In general, the name of the genus should be translated from Latinized ancient Greek as "skrytovoloska" - males of this species on the underside of the forewings at the rear edge of the wing have a tuft of hair-like scales, which are covered with the front edge of the hind wings. Hence the name.

On October 2, a tropical storm brought hurricane-force winds: 45 m / s was recorded by the station before the power outage, 53 m/s in the port. Not only trees, but also metal structures failed.
On October 6, we managed to reach Sopki. I was surprised by the abundance of different unfamiliar birds. Bright spots fly through the almost bare forest - it's beautiful.

Which is tufted and mottled-these are grouse. Upside down , a nuthatch, and a blue - winged jay. identified on the page.

Olga, thank you for the beautiful photos ! The fallen forest was impressive, and the falling crane was shown many times on TV, so it turns out this is where it was!
Birds and mushrooms in the photo - the most common, you can say Leningrad. Which is tufted and mottled-these are grouse, a delicious bird ! Upside down , a nuthatch, and a blue - winged jay. Just these birds are hog, secretive, and then the forest blew away and they became visible. Beautiful!

Thank you so much for identifying the jay. I didn't think this bird was so beautiful. I'll post two more birds in a few days. One of them haunts me. About five years ago, a couple appeared far above the hills. This year they started flying right next to the house. I managed to shoot it, but the quality is not very good. It's hard for me to catch birds on the fly.
