October 10, on one side of the house, where there are hills, large birds of prey. If you are standing on a path and a large bird has flown in your direction, you will see a lot of birds that were hiding in the grass fly across the path. This is a winter buzzard, or furry-legged buzzard. They helped me identify it on the page.
On the other side of the house, where there is a vegetable garden, you can watch either single birds or whole flocks. Especially for their admiring, we leave untidy sea buckthorn. Wind-beaten grapes are also picked up. It's a brown thrush.

There are nights when butterflies don't fly, but beetles do. The top two photos are September 4 Nicrophorus maculifrons, I think. The other three are on September 9.

The predator that flies behind your house is called zimnyak, or furry-legged buzzard. Blackbird on sea buckthorn - brown thrush. Lemongrass birds - mountain wagtails. A small bird with red on its sides - a bluetail. Well, the duck seems to be an ordinary mallard (although it may be black...) .

Caterpillars of this group are not easy to find. They are secretive caterpillars that feed at night. You need to search by digging out the litter under the cereals.

Bat specialist Kuniko Kawai said during the lecture "Bats of Hokkaido, Kunashir and Iturup Islands" that these animals, unlike gliding flying squirrels, are capable of free flight with the help of wings. Bats ' vision is poorly developed, and they orient themselves in space by means of radiation and perception of high-frequency sound signals — echolocation. Most bats eat insects, but some can eat nectar or even fish. Insectivorous bats consume a large amount of food-weighing up to one-fifth of their own weight, which brings significant economic benefits to agriculture by eating pest insects. Bats live in different habitats: most species prefer to settle in caves, but bats can also be found in hollows or under the bark of trees, and sometimes they even make "houses" in the rolled-up leaves of plants. The order of bats includes more than one thousand species, which is about 20% of all existing mammal species in the world. Kuniko Kawai said that Japanese experts during joint visa-free expeditions discovered 10 bat species in Kunashir, and 4 in Iturup. For comparison, Hokkaido is home to 19 species, and the Russian Far East — 18 bat species. At the same time, only three species of them have a very extensive range, inhabiting the entire territory of Russia. One of these species, the northern kozhanok (Eptesicus nilssonii), has been recorded in Iturup, but so far it has not been found in Kunashir. Species that have a wide distribution range can carry dangerous infectious diseases from afar.

September 17, 2015 Shevchenko Meltdown Kholmsky district Sakhalin
Going under the crowns of tall larch trees, I noticed that at the height of the view something fluttered out of the tall grass. At first I thought, I wonder what kind of butterfly. I went to the place where she was supposed to sit – no one. I looked up and saw a red-glowing creature flying in the blue sky, plopping down on a larch tree like a sack. The second creature continued to fly now under the canopy of the forest, now out into the open sky. Just by flying: without flapping wings, more soaring - I realized that these are bats. Already at home, having enlarged the photos, I was definitely convinced of this. I think these bats are a couple of small pipefish.

July 7, 2015.
On the island of Sakhalin and on the Kuril Islands, an interesting species grows-Siori bird cherry, or Ainu bird cherry (after the name of the Ainu people). The Siori bird cherry has the longest brush - 25-30 centimeters each.
It is also interesting because its inflorescences are often not drooping, as in other bird cherry species, but are directed upwards, like candles. They begin to droop later, when the fruits are already forming. And when blooming, this tree attracts attention with its narrow and long, faintly fragrant brushes-candles, and it blooms later than the others.
There's a cloud of butterflies in the tree nearby.

It was interesting to compare. From the same gren, but so different. External factors made their own adjustments. The caterpillars slightly changed their color not only with changing ages, but also with changing food. They willingly enjoyed the foliage of the Manchurian apple tree. If they received willow leaves, then they were starved for 12 hours at the beginning, the willow made their shade somewhat darker and redder-purple. However, they also liked the apple leaves from the garden.
Those caterpillars that were located at the bottom of the container, closer to the excrement, became bluish-bluish.

Olga, there is a big topic on birds of Sakhalin at the forum of the Russian Bird Conservation Union:
http://rbcu.ru/forum/forum19/topic2667/
And it is led by a man who deals with these very Sakhalin birds. You can try to contact him, I think he will tell you more precisely.

Unresolved issues with birds in previous posts took time to study the literature and confirm the specialist Nechaev Vitaly Andreevich, for which he is very grateful.
In the photo with Lapland plantain, a field lark is in the background.
Field lark is larger than sparrow, weighing 30-50 kg . It is a large breeding and flying species all over Sakhalin. Wintering grounds in Southeast Asia.
