Everything is painfully familiar - the snowbird, bamboo and fog, but I haven't seen any Hamster pandas...
And the Okhotsk coast is quite different. And still to get close to the oak places.

Polygonia c-album. In comparison, a larger tooth on the outer edge of the hindwings is clearly visible in the subspecies Polygonia c-album hamigera Butler, 1877, inhabiting Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. The second-generation butterfly is larger than the first.
Surprisingly, Sakhalin imagos are larger than Kuban imagos. Perhaps the lower temperatures on Sakhalin make it possible for the caterpillar to form for a longer time. Perhaps humidity also plays a role.

Compare the usual urticaria. In the west, it is noticeably smaller and paler than the Far Eastern one.

09.01.2017, Kholmsk neighborhood, mixed forest with a predominance of larch. The place where Chionea sp. you can see the most. At a temperature of -1.5 on a plot of 300 m 15 individuals. Interestingly, it is on the road or near. In the forest itself is rare, only three found. Perhaps it is the road that is more protected from the wind, but open to the sun.
I just want to say that this is Chionea Nipponica, it's too similar on the Japanese site, and they live in Hokkaido. But just such an assumption was recently refuted without verification: "The species Chionea (Chionea) nipponica Alexander, 1932, was apparently erroneously indicated for the fauna of Russia (Savchenko, 1983)"(ON THE KNOWLEDGE OF WINTER MOSQUITOES OF THE GENUS CHIONEA (DIPTERA, LIMONIIDAE) OF RUSSIA V. E. Pilipenko1*, N. M. Paramonov2**, V. I. Lantsov3***). In the meantime, we will collect material and wait for the results of specialists.
I would like to note that there are small and larger individuals, this applies to both females and males. Probably the first and second year of life.

I mean, a larva can pupate at different ages depending on external conditions?

I welcome your critical attitude. I still don't understand the length of their life cycle. Therefore, the phrase begins with "probably". If you are aware of the issue, just tell me.

Sakhalin, Geometridae → subfamily Ennominae → tribe Boarmiini → genus Alcis. Thank you for your help in defining Bianor, yesterday Evgeny Anatolyevich Belyaev made his own adjustments, so I feel free to offer two moths to your attention.
Alcis deversata (Staudinger, 1892). It is very widespread in Russia.

March 12, 2017. Two types of eagles: white-shouldered and white-tailed. They are easily recognized by their tail. The white-shouldered tail is elongated, wedge-shaped, stepped (photo on a tree). In the white-tailed eagle, it is shorter with a rounded top. Eagles aged 2-3 years have white tail feathers with black tips. In March, eagles migrate to the north of Sakhalin, where they nest. And often form clusters of up to 20 birds. Fishermen say that at fishing sites, birds sit down even next to a person. But I won't get to the Okhotsk coast.

Today, a crow was recaptured from a cub, and they pecked an adult bird. What to do with it, what to feed? It's hard to put it in someone else's nest, it still needs to be found. In general, a headache. Who is it anyway? Maybe you can give me some advice.
I can't upload a photo. What's the reason?

Olga, I'm sorry to bother you, but you once wrote that there is a Far Eastern hawk moth Smerinthus planus on Sakhalin. Can I take a look at its photo or find point? This seems to be one of the first reliable sightings of the species on the island

13.08.2017 13:59, Ольга Титова

Sphingidae In
the first photo of hawk moth of the Leningrad region on the left
On Sakhalin there are Smerinthus caecus and Smerinthus planus. According to a person who has been fishing for 10 years, if the first hawk moth is found on the island, then he has never met the second one in all this time.

I didn't say there was a hawk-eye Find. But in the DV 2016 Insect Catalog, it is marked for the island.

Calliteara lunulata (Butler, 1887) was not observed in Sakhalin in 2015 and 2016. But in 2017, there was a massive summer period from mid-June to early July. The first males. The summer in 2016 was warm. It is possible that this year favorable conditions were created for the development of caterpillars not only of Calliteara lunulata (Butler, 1887), but also of Lymantria dispar (Linnaeus, 1758). Because I've never seen Lymantria dispar as aggressive as it was in 2017.

May 7, 2018, Sakhalin. Eupithecia takao Inoue, 1955. Distribution Russia: Sah., Approx. – Japan, Korea.
Even in Primorye, Eupithecia takao is not common, apparently much less common than the superficially similar Eupithecia daemionata.

Today I visited Cape Slepikovsky. There is a lighthouse on the cape, built by the Japanese in 1934. The lighthouse is active. All living and auxiliary rooms are connected to the lighthouse under one roof. You can live and work without going outside.

February 3 is a rare sunny day in the last winter month. On the southwestern coast of Sakhalin, February is the coldest month of the year, usually January is the coldest month, but on the coasts there is a shift by a month. So February is the middle of our Kholm winter. April 20 - a steady transition of temperature through zero. On February 8, this year's minimum temperature was -20, 4 C, which is only two tenths higher than the lowest temperature recorded in 1942 from observations since 1908. During the day, the maximum is -18 s.
A month earlier this year, eagles appeared. Maybe because there isn't much snow.

Good Sunday evening!
A trifle, but nice-Synanthedon tipuliformis (Clerck, 1759). From currant twigs delivered 10 days ago. Outside, temperatures are still below freezing.
I looked at the Annotated catalog of DV 2016, but the currant glasshouse was never specified for Sakhalin, although works on it have already been published.

May 4-5, 2019. Walk-search for a paddub, which is a food plant for some butterflies. I don't know where it grows in the surrounding area. One thing is clear: you need to look in the forest. The nearest forest is 1 km from the house. I climb the hill and reach the forest: on one side the sea, on the other a narrow ravine with a river, on one of the slopes the forest has taken shelter from the sea winds.

In the spring, the photos were not loaded, so I'm just posting the material now, especially since there is a result.
Synegia ichinosawana moth, whose forage plant is holly, was found in the September harvest last year. I remember that the butterfly is not bright, attracted my attention with a golden hue. Since my fishing spot is not located near the forest, but near hills where holly does not grow, I decided to start the season by searching for holly in the area.
On May 4, along the ridge, I reached a slope with a valley forest, in which I began searching. Met in this forest interesting things. Here is a hydrangea petiolate, even one last year's inflorescence was preserved.

Here is such a flower symplocarpus bud-leaved, an alien of the Cretaceous period. The holly trees were in the middle of the slope and looked rather low to me. When I picked up the twigs, I realized that they seemed to be crawling down the slope. Because of the bending to the ground, the plants seem low, so later raised ferns and other tall grasses hide them. No wonder I don't see them in the summer. Moreover, they grow in a limited area. In the remaining days of May, I went completely down the slope along the river and did not find any more holly trees.

The story continues. At the beginning of August, I still did not find these holly trees. And on a tip from E. A. B., Synegia ichinosawana should be right next to them. I went to the village. Pioneers, where a great place with this plant, and even out of the blue, and not on a slope with a slope of 60 degrees. There are both low and fairly high holly trees here. And, indeed, when the plant was startled, moths began to rise around the plant. They seemed to fly under the leaves of neighboring ferns, which were surrounded by holly trees. This was the species Synegia ichinosawana (Matsumura, 1925) that has been troubling my soul for so long. It is distributed in Russia in the south of Sakhalin and South-Kur. (Iturup Island, Kunashir). Outside the country, only in Japan (Hokkaido, Rebun, Honshu). Island endemic!

This year, Phymatopus japonicus Inoue, 1982 managed to catch the beginning of summer. The view flies over the high-grass hills. But not over the whole hill, but on a plot of 20 meters at the base of the hill, where it is quite wet. The flight of a thin worm can be called pendulum-like, in the second photo I tried to shoot in flight.

At the end of the flight, it sits on the underside of the leaves. If you touch a leaf, it falls and doesn't move.
