Advanced search for insect images on the Web

Community and ForumInsects imagesAdvanced search for insect images on the Web

Peter Khramov, 25.04.2016 19:56

If you search for photos, for example, insects in Google/In Yandex. Images, based on the names of these insects, we may encounter two big problems:

1. Google Yandex takes into account the texts around the image, and so on, and so on, as a result of which a lot of all sorts of garbage will be found, and it will often not be obvious from the pictures whether it is actually it or not. This is especially true for species that don't have enough photos on the Internet.
2. At the request of a higher taxon (for example, tribes), photos with captions will be displayed, where the name of the tribe is included, and we often need photos of all lower taxa to be displayed as well.

Question: if there is a gizmo that will search for pictures of insects on the Web and which at the same time is devoid of the disadvantages of paragraphs 1-2, how much will it make your life easier?

P.S. It is clear that there is still point 3 under the title "the author of the photo did not know what he posted on the Network, and the definition of it is inadequate", but this is quite a problem with completely different methods of solving...

And how are you going to deal with this within the network? Manually identify it and add it to your database?

It doesn't hurt to dream tongue.gif
Personally, my LIFE! the money printing press in my apartment will make it easier lol.gif

Seriously though umnik.gif
The zoological collections of all museums where a huge number of species are preserved would be very helpful in image search, and most importantly, access to these collections online. To do this, you need to scan (digitize) the copy (preferably from different angles) and all the labels in bm in good quality. In my experience, I came across similar resources and found images, and most importantly, definitions for instances.
And if you need to view, for example, collections of beetles in the ZIN collection, register and see for yourself, compare.
Someone will say this is a titanic work, I agree. But it is necessary, and those people who have access to the entomological collections of museums need to gradually deal with this. Otherwise, we'll just Google weep.gifit .

What do you mean? Manually identify — this is already p. 3 turns out, but I'm not talking about it...

If it were possible to enter the image itself, a photo of a previously captured beetle, in the search bar (or special window). This does not seem to exist yet. And the output can turn out to be such nonsense! The existing image database on the web is gradually expanding, and the search will become more productive over time. Just post more photos of rare species that are reliably identified smile.gif

Photos of these same species still need to be found. That was the question.

I mean, search for images that are already on the Web.

If Google image search was more intelligent and recognized a photo of a beetle from a different angle, identifying it with the existing database - it would be super. But in most cases, to make a unique photo on the site, just rotate it a few degrees and Google even sees the existing image on the network, rotated in this way, as a unique picture. Therefore, such a survey at this stage of search development is simply about nothing.

Have you ever tried using qualifiers? confused.gif

This survey is not about speech recognition or searching for such things.

The topic is in the "Insect Images" section, not in " Classification/Definition of insects". If a person is looking for images of insects, then they need them. Whether to define or not to define is up to him.
A survey for those who are looking for images.

Can and do you want to create a filter program that filters out garbage?
That would be great!

27.04.2016 12:52, Peter Khramov

There is rather not filtering the output from Google, but self-indexing (Google is given just for comparison).
Now let's try to finish the trial version, so that "it's better to see it once" ...
