Don't overdo it. Still, 0.01 percent are "entomological" people. A few years after I arrived, I worked long enough with surveyors to travel all over the north, where I collected a good collection of beetles . Once a team of three Arabs was sent to help us. (I will not express my attitude to them - this is another topic). But their foreman (about 35 years old), seeing me with a net, even felt respect for me. What he found, he ran to me: - " Vze esh leha?" ( Do you have this?), and once he brought me a saga (we didn't work on Friday and Saturday, and he caught it on Thursday evening in his village). Imagine, he watched her for 3 days so that she wouldn't die and give her to me alive. (A photo of this saga can be found in the Insecta varia Israel section). Once we had a break in work for 3 hours, I suggested that he go to the museum (there was such a km in 30). There was a small collection of beetles. I told him something about them, he listened and interjected:-" And I saw this one, and there are a lot of these in the spring on the flowers, and these - in the garden", etc. So there is still something good in the world!
Another case. Once, in the city center, I bent down to pick up a black heifer. I put it in the camera roll case (I don't go out without them), and shpanenok runs up to me:"Ma ze? Ma ze? (What is it?) I tell him, don't worry, it's not a shekel, and I show him the beetle. And here it is... Attention! No interest (like, why do you need this) - immediately a question:- "Veesh leha hipushit im karnaim?" ( Do you have a beetle with horns?) A little taken aback, I ask again, what kind of beetle? Well, he says, with horns-
YLITH korim lo (his name is YLITH). (I know his name, but I don't know how you know it. Honestly, if he still called him ILIT Suriya, I would raise the percentage of non - "entomological" people by an order of magnitude.) I keep up the conversation, saying that there is no such bug. He says-give us 100 shekels, tomorrow it will be. (the kid is 11-12 years old). Too expensive, I say, but if only 3 beetles and a female, then it will go. I turn the conversation into a joke, and he is completely serious, asks what she looks like, Explains, horns are small and all that, even drew. Then he says, no, I haven't seen it, but you want 5 males for 100 shekels. I say no, only with a female. He's gone, and I still don't have an Israeli stag beetle.

Children, by the way, can be safely attributed to those who do not shy away from entomology. At least, I have never seen such a frenzied and gratuitous fear of insects and dislike, as in adults, among them. Just as calmly and adequately children relate to "uncles" collecting "bugs" and chasing butterflies. Everything begins to change rapidly with adolescence, apparently not without the participation of adults and more "advanced" elders. However, children have their own special feature - their cognitive interest is often sadistic in nature. But probably everyone goes through this stage (how can you not see what's inside the toy), as long as it doesn't drag on.

children have observed a negative reaction to insects.. but... Exactly the same as their parents'!!1 All sorts of cadres can spoil people in a short period of time. Sometimes when you meet such people, when both the parents are stupid, and the children are just as pompous and worthless, it becomes somehow disgusting. The kid is about five years old, and already "ugh, insects, why do you need this stuff?.".
But there are children who run around with green leaf eaters and are happy.
Education in general is a serious matter - here it is already necessary as it relates to driving-do not raise children without rights smile.gif

In that kibbutz, we often come to visit Noam (already my son's ex-girlfriend). The neighbors no longer paid attention to my hobby, probably thought that I was with "hello", I "messed up" with everyone, treated me well, asked when the book would be published, and so on.
Once, as usual, I went to "mow". In the summer in Israel, it is impossible to" mow", the grass is dried (there is no rain), and if something turns green, then it is always in thorns. I walk along the side of the road, already 2 km from the kibbutz. And I ran into one bush, and on it abscesses (MYLABRIS SYRIACA). They sit in a group, 50-60 individuals. (I have many species of abscesses, but they all came across singly, or rather, on a certain site-there is one, there are two, and this particular species I met several more times and always in a group. And what is interesting, there are a lot of such bushes around, and they only sit on one, and on the other - not a single one. And next to it is a small tree, as tall as I am. And circling that tree are red barbels (CORYMBIA CORDIGERA). I stared at this beauty (milyabris 3 cm-too beautiful, and barbels here...) And I hold the net behind my back, I forgot about it. And here this idyll is interrupted by a signal, such a sharp, nasty one (I'm on the side of the road, although cars rarely pass). And a kibbutznik comes out of it (our typical collective farmer, Vasya, is like that). He asks me who I am and what I do (in fact, I think they have such a right to be interested, since Lebanon is very close). I say I'm visiting Noam. Here, I'm walking (WELL, THEY DON'T WALK LIKE THAT!). That's what I'm doing here! And even though the conversation is already friendly (I came to visit his neighbor!), seeing the net, (or guessed or heard about me) says: "But you can't catch butterflies!"
And I say: - "You see, I don't catch butterflies, I just went to Noam Akrav's (scorpion) house at night, so I don't want him to climb anymore. To which he told me that he crushes five of these akravimas every night, he's already used to it. That was the end of it. It's not much of a story, but if you think about it...

Thaler knows the situation very well. For some butterflies, a special law has recently been issued. And very strict.
I climb goat trails and often hide my net.Recently, I switched to caterpillars altogether. In short, I am where the mountain goats and wild boars are.By the way, I recently saw a leopard on Mount Carmel!

Is it true that he was grinding there, a little bigger than a cat?

To be honest, I've seen leopards in the zoo for a very long time. Therefore, it is difficult to say that he "crushed".But, of course, it is much larger than a cat. Moreover, it feeds on wild pigs.

- Arthur, - stop mystifying the townsfolk!!! - write a short entomological educational program on your T-shirt (on the back ) lol.gif  lol.gif  lol.gif

That's a thought, by the way... I recently made myself an application on a dragonfly T-shirt. But you could put a long inscription - " I photograph insects. If you get in the way, I'll release a swarm of wasps from the box."

The other day, I remember several episodes at once:
1. The girl deftly waved her hand and caught a butterfly. Then she threw it in a puddle and crushed it. Mummy: "Well, why...". They went on in silence – no educational work.
2. Bumblebees clung to liatris inflorescences in the park. A man asks his 12-year-old daughter to stand near the flowers so that he can take a picture of her. The girl sees bumblebees, makes a face and shouts: "Fi, what a disgusting thing, I won't get up there!". And the father himself calmly removes insects end-to-end.
Parents are simply too lazy to explain something to their children or they tell them stories. My nephew once tried to crush insects – one aunt taught him. And now he adores them. He even wanted to raise fillies at home, saying that since I have Erianthus trees, why shouldn't he?
3. Half an hour I sneak up to the dragonfly-orthetrum, already my back is numb. Just a few more inches and I'll take a picture of her. Suddenly a fisherman appears. There's plenty of room around – he can walk around me, but no, he's walking right here, touching the camera with his fishing rod and almost stepping on my toes. The dragonfly flies away. Oh, how I want to exclaim: "So that the fish don't bite you for a year!", but, as always, I modestly keep quiet.

At one time, bookmarks were printed and distributed on paper scraps formed after cutting Zoosystematica Rossica. You sit in the subway, reading, and people stare at the bookmark with lice. A trifle, but nice.

Mda, still, despite the "disgust" many people are interested in watching the catching of insects! Although there are also interesting cases nearby: I recently came to visit my relatives, they know my hobby so they immediately took me to the cellar, they were afraid to go there themselves (I was wary because they didn't tell me what was there) well, I carefully crawl in, look around and see Saturnia pyri on the wall of a decent size, which is incomprehensibly already and managed to dry out. It was lucky for my relatives that there was nothing important in the cellar, otherwise they would not have gone there for money lol.gif. The poor thought that there was at least a large blood-sucking bat (although in their parts such are not found lol.gif). In general they thanked me for a long time arranged a bathhouse etc Well, in principle, I have a good copy smile.gif jump.gif

For whom only I was not taken seeing with a net in the meadow, in the forest, at night at the lantern...
There was a funny case in the early hungry 90s. My friend and I caught interesting sawflies in a young pine tree near the road. Sanych has climbed into the thickest part of the forest and uses a net to disperse them from the tops of their heads in different directions, while I walk along the edge of the pine forest and catch the flying specimens. Two men of indeterminate appearance, probably Gribneks, pass by on bicycles. Almost from the bikes did not fall with their heads up and closely watching my actions. Sanych was farther away at the turnoff to the forest. A little later, he tells us about the cyclists, or rather about their conversation among themselves:
"They're definitely catching something to eat now!"
"Certainly not butterflies!"

I previously wrote this story on the forum "Tales of entomologists "(from the series of tales of Penza and Saratov entomologists). But, for some reason, this message flew off???

About five years ago, I was engaged in research on the insect fauna of a steppe gully "Bolshaya Endova", 30 km away. north-west of Penza (highway M-5).
The main goal was to identify changes in the mace-whiskered lepidopteran fauna from early spring to late autumn-in this particular biotope. Well, along the way, I collected all the interesting insects. I tried to go to this gully every week: I got up early in the morning, drove to the dacha bus stop, shook on a dying copy of Ikarus, walked 3 km from the highway along a country road and watched, caught, looked for insects all day... Very monotonous and hard work, I must admit (especially in the heat of + 30 degrees or during a thunderstorm that hit, after which my legs parted in the greasy black soil, it was time to crawl on it...). In the evening, I hurried to the bus stop, drove with tired summer residents to the city, scared people with my marching appearance in the grocery store... He warmed water in a bucket, bathed, and spread out the collected insects until late at night...
This beam is huge and of a rare shape for us - a cirque (in the form of ancient dishes - endowments). The area is about two square kilometers. There was still a small herd of cows grazing there that summer. Shepherds hired guest workers (residents of Uzbekistan) who for some reason always asked me to smoke...?
So, in the middle of July, the haymaking began. At the top of the slope, a team of local mowers is diligently mowing down the grass-on the slopes (below) I run with a net for butterflies. Suddenly, I notice that when I catch them mowing hay on the slope, the whole team stops working and actively discusses something (waving their hands, swearing, smoking), looking down at me intently. I didn't go in their direction again, out of harm's way (you never know - suddenly they got their heads full). After finishing early (the water supply and mineral balance ran out, but the heat was still high), I packed up my equipment and hurried down the country road to the bus.
As soon as I got on the track and went to the bus stop, a cyclist overtakes me and stops abruptly, obviously waiting for me to catch up with him. Piously remembering that "there is no beast scarier than an entomologist in the fields", I calmly go. A peasant of indeterminate age, tanned and wearing a greasy hat, coughed and said:
- Eee-zzz-venyayte, I have a question for you-s-s!???
"I'm listening," I say, and stop.
"Uh-uh, we're mowing hay here... Well, we had a dispute!!?
"What do you mean?"
- Uh-uh, you are a beekeeper and catch the queen!??
"Or you collect pollen..."
"What-o-O-O-O?"?? I am genuinely indignant and blurt out indignantly:
- I'm an ENTOMOGOG !!!
What the man thought, I still don't know...
His face twitched and twisted. Grabbing his bike in his arms, he sped away from the road...

When I was 20 and I wanted to go back and forth, but I didn't have any money, because working with my brother didn't give me much, I was fully mastering the entomobusiness. One of his manifestations was to break his proud self and go out every Saturday to the so-called book fair with frames to sell them. I haven't done this for 8 years, but then it was a help - you can stand for 5 hours - once and $ 200 in your pocket. By the summer, you can spend 90 days in the field shaking things up. I can't say that this work brought me pleasure, all the more so it traumatized my parents - as such, my son stands on the market selling. I understand them now...
Anyone who knows a little about trading frames knows that SCORPIO is an important position. I've always had them - black, angry, dried things.
This is where I started my observations. There was still an interest in psychology and psychiatry at that time , so the research also began.
People seeing the scorpion shied away and made conclusions.
1. ALL THE KIDS SAID-scorpio!
2. Adults were not so unanimous:
a) 10% considered scorpions scorpions
b) 50 % crayfish, crabs
c) 10% beetles
d) 20% silently walked away
e) 9% demonstrated knowledge of bestiaries, mythology, demonology, calling them creatures, monsters, creatures, reptiles, vampires, evil spirits.
f) 1 called him Shiva!

15.12.2009 21:47, Штучка

My husband immediately took my lesson well and helps me in any way he can. And it will take you where you need to go, and it will help you catch them. Sometimes he sets traps himself on a business trip. There's nothing to say about my son. He's an entomologist growingsmile.gifup. Even my mother-in-law, who used to think collecting insects was the stupidest thing in her life, can now bring a bug by herself.

How lucky for you, my situation is twofold! My parents fully share my hobbies in entomology, even my grandmother brings a butterfly or beetle from the garden, not to mention tomatoes and cucumbers.
But on the personal front, everything is quiet. I even got into the habit of inviting every new acquaintance to "hunt"with me sooner or later. If a person continues to communicate with me, then my trust and respect for him increases several times! The check works flawlessly, extra people disappear immediately!

Entomobusiness is another TOPIC I'll tell you!
Everyone has experienced this before!! I once undertook to help (it was a long time ago) fellow collectors of insects, to realize straightened tropical butterflies. How many years have passed, and I'm still being "terrarized": - Do you have a butterfly of this color!? And the frame only needs this... etc, etc.
And recently we have a new entertainment for bohat people in the city-LIVE butterfly fireworks. One schoolteacher was given a box by the schoolboys as a gift for Teacher's Day. Kondraty almost visited the poor woman. As a result, follow the chain (from friends to friends) this beautiful box came to me. It was cool and the animals didn't suffer much. Some of the "skeletons" had to be immediately killed with ethyl acetate out of pity. Part (whole and beautiful) features pulled me, show colleagues at work. WHAT STARTED HERE! The horror!!! People from all over the university came to me all day long: to see, touch, take a picture, etc. On the second day, I couldn't stand the popularization of entomology, I just gave everything away - explaining in detail how and what to feed the poor people...

I also, slightly touching the frames (there was a case), in such cases clearly explained that all these unnatural butterflies are made of bread crumb. The people either laughed or, calming down, usually muttered respectfully: "Fine work, however!".
