Maxim Klepikov sent out information about materials on European butterflies in pdf format yesterday. The materials were received by Maxim from Svetlana Miteva (Butterfly Conservation Europe) with the assurance that their free distribution is strongly encouraged. There is only one small problem: the materials are now in an unassembled form, and the analysis, if it is carried out, will require a noticeable amount of time. Therefore, now I am just posting a list of files, if it is already clear from the name that the information may be interesting to them — write the article numbers, I will post them for download.
List of articles (more than 500 pieces, very different quality and focus): http://lepidoptera.ru/articles/ under the heading "Additional articles".
P. S. Most of the materials are in English
. P.S. S. Article numbers can be sent to the BOS, in this topic, or by email, main#lepidoptera.ru (instead of a bug, a dog).

Yes, Svetlana told in ZINA how 6000 European collectors walk 40,000 km a year and count butterflies. I also got a flash drive by accident. I don't really believe in the success of the company in our territory.

Svetlana and Maxim also managed to come to our department, agitated Devyatkin smile.gifand me For the territory of the ERD - an unrealistic occupation, we have too few "butterfly watchers" and too large a territory. This is not the Netherlands, which Svetlana gave as an example...

Please explain what kind of "enterprise" we are talking about. Something like butterfly counts? smile.gif What does this have to do with the selection of works described above?

IMHO, that's not even why. This is what we (EXSSR) won't do: "practical solutions and improve land use policies". What kind of improv is there, our people on average only want to shit and steal. Alas! And without this, no conservation will work.

Well, that goes without saying...

18.11.2010 14:14, Penzyak

All this reminds me of the French project on counting woodcock on the territory of Russia. In Moscow, there is even an initiative group whose research is funded by the French, on the spot the accountant is paid several thousand (according to the results). But, for such accounts, you need the experience of a woodcock hunter or a good ornithologist! The whole trick is that on wintering grounds in France and Italy, local hunters kill 2-3-4 million woodcocks per season - of course, they are less and less from year to year (probably in Europe they still think that animals are born out of mud...). Well, Europeans have an opinion that Russian hunters are to blame for everything - who mercilessly knock out in the spring of woodcocks (this is for 2 weeks then-and even if you consider that in Russia 2-3 hunters out of 10 hunt woodcocks). Again, they want to hang "all dogs"on us...

Question to the people. There are attributes for selecting species/photos: Family, Color, Zoogeo area, Photographer, and the accuracy of determining the type in the photo. How much will it help if in each of these signs you can choose several options ("or"). I.e. not just red, but red or orange or yellow?
P.S. There is no question about the necessity of such characteristics for selection in general, as well as about the scientific nature of the approach — everything is clear with this.

After a long delay, the site is updated again. It didn't add any scientific content, but it made it more pleasant and convenient to work with what is available.

Briefly about the changes and work carried out:

* Individual pages are only available for species that have at least a brief description and/or illustration on their site. Also, only these views are found in the "Catalog" section. The "Classification" section contains all types, including those for which there are no descriptions or photos
* In the completely new "Catalog" section, you can select species based on an arbitrary combination of values for several attributes. You can now select by front wing size, family, color, time of summer, and zoogeographic area. That is, if you want to try to determine the butterfly species or get a taste of the variety of these very species, it is now more convenient to do this in the catalog, rather than in the gallery
* Something similar to the "Catalog" section of the old version of the site is now in the section "Classification". But better designed and illustrated
* The interactive part has been restored — registration of new users, accounts registered earlier, commenting on descriptions of views and photos is available, and the guest page is working. Uploading new photos is temporarily disabled, but now it's really not for long
* In the "Recent updates" section, the design has been changed, including:h. now, in addition to the names, you can also view preview illustrations
* There are now only two free fields on the individual species description page — with forage plants and additional information. Everything else is classified as formal features and is used for free samples in the catalog (the same color, size, etc.) In general, a lot of water has been removed from the descriptions. In addition, two illustrations are now used here (if they are available on the site), and for the list of species of the same genus, not only names are given, but also previews of illustrations
* Unnecessary photos have been removed — those for which there are better duplicates on the site. Changed the photos illustrating the views
* Slightly changed the design. Added Russian family names. Fixed a lot of typos. Fixed glitches with displaying some authors ' names in full view names. Fixed glitches with extra symbols sometimes appearing in full species names. Several more controls have been added to the interfaces that respond not only to the click on the element itself, but also to the caption to it.

The site help section will soon be published, which will explain in detail how the catalog and other sections work. In addition, the search section will resume (currently being improved) and users will upload new photos, as well as launch the "About Site" section with a general description.

Since the site does not have a permanent scientific administrator, and I act as the administrator, it remains a popular science focus. There will be an admin — everything is changeable, but for now-so.

If anyone has any comments, comments on the new version of the site, and other reviews — please send them to this topic, in the BOS, or by email main#lepidoptera.ru and also in The site's guestbook

Now registered users have received the first newsletter with the site's news.
— Those who unchecked "Receive newsletter" during registration or later in the settings, respectively, will not receive a newsletter.
— Those who didn't remove the jackdaw or put it down later will receive both this letter and subsequent ones.
— Those who registered at a time when this checkbox was not on the site at all will receive only one, the first email. If they still want to receive emails in the future — you need to check the appropriate box in their personal settings on the site. Until then, no mailings will be sent from the site.
If anyone has any glitches with the receipt, someone wanted to get it, but did not get it, or everything is quite the opposite — do not hesitate to let me know by email, write to the site, to this forum, in the BOS or on the macro club.
In addition, the site has a pro-newsletter for those who are able to determine the types of butterflies in the photo (when it is even possible). If you have the time or desire, sign up in the user settings, and once every one or two weeks you will receive an email with a list of photos that you need help identifying.
P. S. Please note that since the site has been stagnant for a long time, the password for logging in to the user account is reminded at the end of the email.

Visili, this was not a pro, but a regular newsletter. Did she come to see you?"

I just put a jackdaw on the usual one (both of them are standing now), so apparently it didn't come.

07.01.2011 16:22, Peter Khramov

Then it is clear, there are no problems. The next one is both normal and pro will be in your mailbox. P.
S. And the fact that it throws you out of the account from time to time is not a matter of the opera theater, but of the time limit of the session. If you don't do anything on the site for a relatively long time, the session ends. In general, it would be necessary to increase this period and put auto-search on the site, but this will be a little later, now people have uploaded a lot of photos, and even with the old version left — you need to disassemble/publish.

Personally, I really like the photo downloader (the ability to upload an archive) and the image distribution system on macroid.ru - it is very convenient to upload 100 photos at once and then just distribute them in specific directories. It turns out to work very quickly.
Yeah, I tried it now, and it can really be convenient when you need to upload a lot of photos. Soon there will be a system for editing photos that have just been uploaded, but not yet published, and I'll try to add the ability to work with archives there.

Upon further study of the site, I realized that I was wrong. Apologize. I just want to wish you a more creative design solution-just like on the site
http://ukbutterflies.co.uk/ or http://entomology.ru/.
It would also be great to create a Cadastre section, where all entomologists would add "label information" about the capture of a particular butterfly species on the territory of Russia. And in the section Distribution of each specific essay, make a hyperlink to the resource for this type in the Cadastre. I have accumulated a lot of information on the distribution of butterfly species in the Lipetsk region, Primorye, Yakutia, etc. And it's time to collect it and save it on one common "platform". I suggest it on this site.

not necessarily with archives. it can be some kind of batch loader, such as the one that"VKontakte". When you can select many photos at once. And also "Vkontakte" in this downloader there is a very convenient feature - when photos do not need to be independently reduced in Photoshop to the web size. You select the images you need to upload (large ones), and he reduces them on the computer and uploads the already reduced images.

I think I'll do it through the archive, although the package is also an option.
And also "Vkontakte" in this downloader there is a very convenient feature - when photos do not need to be independently reduced in Photoshop to the web size. You select the images you need to upload (large ones), and he reduces them on the computer and uploads the already reduced images.
Duc, there it is made in order to publish photos immediately. And on Lepidoptera.ru photos without pre-processing will still not be published. For uploading, the only limit is 3MB in size. Or even 3 MB is annoying? You can increase the limit, in principle. And I don't want to compress it automatically, because the original must be of the maximum quality, you never know what...

09.01.2011 19:14, Peter Khramov

You need to connect the map and put points...
Maybe. Although there are some doubts that it is necessary to close up points in open mode.

and to the pictures, too, although then you should not limit yourself to two or three pictures in appearance.
And where is the limit of 2-3 photos?

And I don't understand what prevents you from watching big photos - or is it already there?
Not yet, but it will be soon.

I don't think regional checklists will hurt either...
Of course, it doesn't hurt if someone comes from fans of regional lists to fill in the content.

In general, you can view the same one biolib.cz - it is quite normal in terms of ideology for a slightly broader site.
I continue to be blown away by the technical squalor of such sites. However, ideology is another matter...

> Possible. Although there are some doubts that it is necessary to close up points in open mode.
Butterflies are mostly destroyed by the destruction of biotopes. Hiding points won't do you much good... moreover, one person will not change much in this. Specialists need accurate information. And housewives for 100-200 kilometers for butterflies still will not go.

> And where is the limit of 2-3 photos?
Well, at least ideological, maybe it seemed to me.... "Removed unnecessary photos — those for which the site has better duplicates."

> Of course, it doesn't hurt if someone fills in the content from fans of regional lists.
Well, if you start with the map, then it is quite logical.

> I continue to be blown away by the technical squalor of such sites. However, ideology is another matter...
Well, I didn't notice any technical squalor biolib.cz, or some technical super-perfection lepidoptera.ru, sites as sites... And the ideology is worth paying attention to.

10.01.2011 0:13, Peter Khramov

Butterflies are mostly destroyed by the destruction of biotopes. Hiding points won't do you much good...
Yes, I'm not really talking about protecting, God forgive me, nature, even... In general, there is some kind of thorn in the feelings, and therefore Gru doubts. How (if) I will formulate it, I will write here.
moreover, one person will not change much in this.
What is it about?
Specialists need accurate information. And housewives for 100-200 kilometers for butterflies still will not go.
But the fact is that a couple of years ago, when I also had a thought about points on the map, people grilled that this information was not serious when the devil knows from whom it was published on the site.
In general, here again the lack of an administrator of a scientific orientation affects. Now the people have become more active, maybe there will be someone.

y at least ideological, maybe it seemed to me.... "Removed unnecessary photos — those for which the site has better duplicates."
Ah, well, this is completely removed things that are duplicated or of poor quality (if later better photos appeared). And so-there are 13 photos for ikars, there are very similar ones (from a botanical point of view), but everything is in place http://lepidoptera.ru/species/polyommatus-icarus/

Well, if you start with the map, then it is quite logical.
In fact, I think that the map for regional lists, at least at the beginning, will not do much. But the person who is in the topic is much more. However, that these things are interconnected — here you are right, of course.

Well, I didn't notice any technical squalor biolib.cz, or some technical super-perfection lepidoptera.ru, sites as sites... And the ideology is worth paying attention to.
Maybe I put it wrong. Using the example biolib.cz:
- Disgusting appearance
— Obscene interface
At Lepidoptera.ru:
— There is no appearance as such
— the interface is normal.
As for the appearance, most of the sites in this topic just refers to or option biolib.cz, or to the option Lepidoptera.ru. As for the interface, most of them will be in the same group with biolib.cz.
And there is no super-perfection, of course. So far, the glitches still appear. The only thing that pleases is that at the moment they are being corrected quickly.
But if there is a site where it is more convenient to search for information — I would really like to look at it. Throw links, if that ...
P. S. About the ideology-can you learn more? What is it, for example, on this bluish site?

Maybe. Although there are some doubts that it is necessary to close up points in open mode.

I mean, the black entomologists will come and catch everything? It's probably just about Apollo. But they already know the most profitable points of it. And there Apollo is still alive. smile.gif
In Europe, by the way, there are a lot of open access cadastres, and" butterfly people " (say, British ones) know up to a meter where everything flies. In such a vast and little-explored area, why should we be afraid? In addition, everything is at the discretion of the participant: if you feel sorry for a certain point , you can omit it or give it a "general reference".

10.01.2011 2:08, barry

Yes, I'm not really talking about protecting, God forgive me, nature, even... In general, there is some kind of thorn in the feelings, and therefore Gru doubts. How (if) I will formulate it, I will write here.

Well, if you just get points from everyone, then it is clear that there is no trust, you never know what it seemed to someone that flew past him there. But the trust in points confirmed by photos is naturally greater, at least everyone can see for themselves what is there in the photo. Well, there can be caught and straightened copies. from the point and it is good if it is confirmed acc. photo. Well, if you allow everyone to put just dots, then of course this is a dubious feature in terms of trust, maybe you shouldn't allow this at all, or only a select few.

Ah, well, this is completely removed things that are duplicated or of poor quality (if later better photos appeared). And so-there are 13 photos for ikars, there are very similar ones (from a botanical point of view), but everything is in place http://lepidoptera.ru/species/polyommatus-icarus/

Well, if only there was a reasonable compromise, and not a race for cleaning, because from the point of view of points - the more illustrative photos, the better. That's what I meant.

In fact, I think that the map for regional lists, at least at the beginning, will not do much. But the person who is in the topic is much more. However, that these things are interconnected — here you are right, of course.

The map is a reason for reflection and a certain ground for purposeful search for new species for the region. If there is a species somewhere on the borders, then there is a possibility that it also penetrates into the neighboring region. For example, in the Kharkiv region. I dug up the bedbugs Agramma tropidopterum
http://barry.fotopage.ru/gallery/index_cla...p?category=4747
They are typical for more northern places, in Ukraine, according to the information I have, there were finds only in the Chernihiv region. I met them just in the north-west of the Kharkiv region. Similarly, there are species that are known in the Luhansk region, quite rare, the findings were several decades ago, I managed to find something now in the east of the region.

Can you tell us more about your ideology?

Well, specifically, while I can't say anything concrete offhand, I need to use it, analyze it, and again, accurately represent the goals and purpose of the site (you may have other goals). I think if you will cook in it yourself, then the ideas and functionality will come by themselves. Make it convenient for you to work... Try uploading the same 100 photos that were mentioned above (and more than once) - and you will come up with an idea of how to optimize this business. Try to understand the difference in similar views in tiny pictures - and you will come up with the idea that you need to see it bigger... etc. Understand why people come to your site, what goals they set - give them a tool to solve the problems they face.
I started making macroids and continue to do them through myself first of all. Of course, I try to listen to the cries that are heard somewhere and somehow take them into account... smile.gif

10.01.2011 2:49, Wild Yuri

Well, if you allow everyone to put just dots, then of course this is a dubious feature in terms of trust, maybe you shouldn't allow this at all, or only a select few.

Otakar Kudrna once carried out a project to map the butterflies of Europe. Everyone was invited to participate. He just estimated the margin of error - no more than 1% of "misinformation", and is it worth it to complicate the project with "selecting favorites", photo confirmations, etc.? But, of course, the points will need to be put up on the site after moderation, otherwise "hackers"show up... smile.gif

10.01.2011 10:56, vasiliy-feoktistov

I also don't mind putting dots on the map (regarding what I chose myself). But, sinned by me on the site posted individual copies that I got through many hands and without labels, respectively: only the region or country of fishing is known (it happens) and with this, alas, nothing can be done already.

And if you make it possible for" specialists " to immediately publish photos without moderation? Specialists are approved by the admin. Then the admin will have less work to process the photo stream. 3 mb is not enough - 20 meters by itself. As for automatic compression, I repeat, this is a very convenient feature. The original photos do not suffer at all, the reduced versions are probably cached somewhere in the computer and from there they are already uploaded to the site.

10.01.2011 14:05, Peter Khramov

And if you make it possible for" specialists " to immediately publish photos without moderation? Specialists are approved by the admin. Then the admin will have less work to process the photo stream.
Yes, I only want the admin to have less work :-- ) But there is a catch — pre-moderation of photos on the site does not so much allow you to cut off spam and other delusional photos, as it is necessary for pre-preparation of images for publication. Yes, there are photographers who send pictures in a more than ready-made form, and I can, by and large, only change the size and paste the copyright label. But most people still send photos in such a form that the crop, color, and other brightness/contrast with sharpness are very relevant. And this, in general, is normal. As a result, I edit all incoming photos before posting them.

3 mb is not enough - 20 meters by itself.
20 — for archives? Why not? But not for the same photo (3MB is the limit for one picture, although I'll probably make it more). Or are we talking about different things at all?:--))

As for automatic compression, I repeat, this is a very convenient feature. At the same time, the original photos do not suffer at all, the reduced versions are probably cached somewhere in the computer and from there they are already uploaded to the site.
That's just it. If the originals remain, then there is no use in reducing them — because, as I wrote above, you can't hide or hide from the pre-processing of images...

10.01.2011 14:59, Peter Khramov

barry, about the cards unsubscribed in the BOS. As for the ideology, apparently, I didn't immediately understand what it was about. What is on yourself is yes.

for archives of course smile.gif

13.01.2011 2:02, Wild Yuri

P.S. Why should there be no restrictions only on the territory of Russia?..

Of course, it is better without territorial restrictions. Only you will have more work on moderation. Can you handle it? smile.gif
The above-mentioned Otakar Kudrna once sent out thick bundles of forms to participants of the "butterfly" cadastre to fill out for all registered taxa. A ton of paper by international mail! Then count everything, enter it in the database... The costs and labor were enormous. Now, through the Internet, everything is easier. In the United States, for example, at the end of the season, entomologists (90% are amateurs) send their "labels" by email to the heads of local branches of the lepidopterological cadastre about catching or otherwise registering (say, photographing) butterfly species. They transfer them to the database and put points on the map. Then all this is combined in a common database... Separate large project. You can create a simplified Russian equivalent by opening the butterfly inventory section on your site, which is updated by everyone. Enter the required fields: Latin of the type and author of the description to filter out "web hooligans" during moderation. And we will get 99% of objective information.
Collectors leave and the most valuable cadastral data is lost with "not attached collections". Others keep their own "under the cloth"... We need to solve the problem somehow. If not within the site, maybe there are other ideas? Does anyone keep a cadaster of butterflies in Russia (or at least its European part)? I will provide my details.

13.01.2011 10:51, Peter Khramov

Wild Yuri, you can go to the BOS or here examples:
If there is a suitable web version with the form and the result — a link to it.
If not — an example of a form / label (filled in), with enough information on it?
