Program for maintaining a collection

Community and ForumOther questions. Insects topicsProgram for maintaining a collection

In the process of accumulating material, accounting is required. There are more and more instances, and we need to organize them. At the same time, a critical mass accumulates, turning the process of making a list into an extremely dreary and painful task. As a result, there was a need to develop a special program that would allow you to organize your personal collection.
At this stage, I intend to formulate the requirements for the program, the structure of the database fields, the layouts of the graphical interface, and then proceed to implementation.

the main component of the program will be a table of types.
Table fields:

Family
Genus
Type
of Male Specimens Female
specimens

For each species, there will be a table of fishing locations and fishing dates, reflecting the location and date of capture of each specimen

I also plan to provide a table of photos that will be linked to the views table.

Main functional content:

1. navigation, sorting, search by any of the database fields
2. adding deleting editing records
3. creating auto-reports (list)
4. export, import the list for sharing
5. Stat analysis of fishing spots and fishing dates.

I invite everyone to participate in the formation of the concept before I start coding, making changes later will be problematic. The program will be written under Windows OS.

Interesting.
From the wishes -- I would like the interface to be without decorations, such as, for example, "Lysandra" .

Lysandra has its own engine. The result is a heavy product. I plan to write the standard interface in WINAPI. The program will be easy and fast.

I have seen several programs made by familiar computer scientists/entomologists. They are inconvenient and the creators themselves refused them. (It may take several years to realize) In the end, everyone keeps records in simple Xls tables. Genus, species, author, number of males and females, collection locations, and so on. Ctrl+F and you've found what you need. Those who continue to use their "monsters" simply like programming more than dealing with insects.

+1, simple spreadsheets are much more convenient and, most importantly, more compact.

I also score my wealth in Excel, but I'm thinking of transferring it to axess - and adding maps with collection points and photos.

I do, of course, a little more complicated. And for people who collect large series, this will generally be inconvenient. I first keep a short diary with basic information, which I duplicate on the label of the copy, and then, in the fall and winter, I bring it all in this form (I started doing this this year smile.gif)(see the photo). It takes a lot of time, but the winter nights last a long smile.giftime , but it's beautiful (I think so). Here is a photo of the instance (exactly who we are talking about), and the place of collection, and the map, and the taxonomy.

if you make a program, I think it would be convenient to make one where in the first window there will be a list of species with the number of copies, and when you click on the name of the species, an additional window opens where there would be other details like date, place, males, females, etc ...

This is all easily accessible in standard MSOffice. Any word, table cell, or even a single letter can be assigned as a hyperlink leading to the desired page, which in turn can contain hyperlinks. Hyperlinks can be either to internal files of the computer, or external-to resources on the Network. Now I don't remember the number of attachment levels, but it's enough for everyday tasks. However, all this is a truism.

quite understandable. But if a person wants to create a special program, then why not? I'm just pushing ideas on how to make it more convenient.

I just started making something like an atlas, for personal use. I download Molbiolov sheets based on the degrees of Panin's work, I drive a separate sheet into the word format for each type. If someone speaks in addition to the type, I immediately take a note in that sheet. There you get an image of other animals, a map of their range, locality, distribution, and similar species. Then I export it to PDF, it turns out a good atlas, as Omar said. Many thanks to Ruslan for that.

In general, I took up this business a little late at the first stages there was no computer. And during the degassing of the material, I use Excel. Maybe there is still a sample not erased in the topic (high technologies), you can see. You can also use a hyperlink to attach a photo to each view (just don't change the folder name after that), and you can filter it any way you want. Another note. I now want to make an annotated list of beetles by groups that interest me if I get an annotated list. So to make it easier to process a bunch of stuff. Don't push beetles with fees. And for each family a separate mattress. I have karobka in it 24 mattresses and as in the library to each tag (tenebrionids, carabids, chrysomelids, scarabeids). Such packaging of the material takes a lot of time in the summer. But then at least you know where to look for what.

Delicious stuff in my opinion. Where else would the distribution kit be "correct" (cured or free) to choose? shuffle.gif

Vasily, do you have a conscience? 40 Australian pupaars to good people for a good job (if you think it's good) what a pity...

By the way, about programs.
People, and maybe the online version of such a thing is interesting? For example.

1. We believe that the Lepidopter has an adequate system*.
2. The user loads only additional data for their instances (fishing location and other parameters that are not common for the taxon). Shared — already exists in the shared folder.
3. The user fully controls access to the data. By default, all data is available only to him, but he can share it to the public or individual users of the site (choose from the list).
4. You might even want to start making individual edits to the taxon system. For example, the system as a whole suits him, but he radically disagrees with the position of a particular thread. Then, without changing the system for everyone, he can change it for himself personally.
5. Advantages for the user: Free of charge, No need to mess with general data (view system, photos, descriptions, etc.), access to information from any device (but only with a network connection, yes), it is convenient to share information with those people with whom the user wants, an adequate response of the admin to requests users in terms of improvements.
6. Disadvantages for the user: To work with the system, you need an Internet connection, information is stored on the server, respectively, although it is protected from outside interference, but theoretically it can be stolen. In addition, it is available to the site administrator, and there is no escape from this either.
7. On the site, thanks to such a thing, more up-to-date information can appear, both private (users share with the public) and general (users are interested in improving general data, such as descriptions, etc.)

* Currently adequate only for Europe. In March-April, it should also apply to the entire territory of the Russian Federation, not just the European one. Then-other things.

Who thinks what?

By the way, from there you can also build a system of publications about what anyone has for sale/exchange — also with options to choose from, starting from showing only the owner of the collection and ending with showing it to everyone (probably you need to individually for each object).
