So each species requires its own diet! Depending on the type, it is also necessary to study the literature...

I've heard of banana leaves before. In general, specialists are not typical for the tropics, i.e. the food spectrum should be (?) quite wide.

Monastyrsky's book" Mass breeding of Insects " seems to contain recipes for universal artificial mixtures for caterpillars. On the Internet, too, there is. But in my opinion, it is easier to get the right food plant than to suffer with it.

Artificial food for caterpillars exists, but for each species it is different. Some are sold (not in Russia), for example, for monarchs. It is quite problematic to make food yourself, since for this you need to have a lot of hard-to-reach substances. No special equipment for butterflies, of course, does not exist and the conditions of detention for different species are different.

For maintenance, you can take both a 5-liter bottle, an aquarium, and order special huge containers. The best option, in my opinion, is to buy a good aquarium, not too huge, fill it with earth, plant food plants (first find out what types you want. then look for information about nutrition), plant plants directly in the aquarium (or even separately, so that you can then tear off branches as needed and feed them, and if forage plants grow under the house, then all the easier.. Although in large numbers and in winter, you can't do without bushes under the house anyway). Put a thermometer on so that if anything you do not overdo it and do not overcool. Rarely spray the soil, but not the leaves, so that there is moisture (but not too much)

What I said wrong - please warn smile.gif

In addition, fresh green food is better for caterpillars than artificial environments. And usually one of the components of artificial environments is still a certain proportion of the forage plant. For tropical species, you can also try to pick up food from the local flora (but not for everyone).

I think that it is necessary to use media only when there are no living plants in abundance, for example, for tropical citrus-eating sailboats.

Taisiya, what species are you going to breed?

And those that are easier, for starters. While it's hard for me to decide, my eyes run in different directions. I prefer the tropics.

Then it is better to start with saturnium. Many tropical peacock eyes willingly eat our plants. Yes, and the material is easier to get than in the case of daytime ones.

Please tell me in more detail which saturniums I should buy and which plants to get. I live in Saratov. And also, I heard about Prague, that there is an exhibition and sale every year. When does it pass? I would be grateful for any information.

If anyone is interested in butterflies of my region, I can send them. I also know where to get dry tropical ones, I can also tell you. I've been collecting them myself for five years. But I want them to be alive.

Another question, tell me where you can order or buy a book by Monastyrsky (mass breeding of insects) or Tkacheva about breeding butterflies.

what are your views? (local, not tropical)

Very easily bred Saturnia pyri, Eudia pavonia (eat local rosaceae). Atlas is quite easy to breed, but there may be problems with mating, especially if the butterflies that are supposed to be mated are the offspring of one female.
Very easy to breed swallowtail.
Some species will be available from me, but not until June.

To choose the types of tropical saturniums for breeding and where to buy them-write to me at rm@tut.by. You don't need to buy any plants, you can make do with the surrounding trees and shrubssmile.gif.The exhibition in Prague takes place 2 times a year. In early March and early October. This year the exhibition will be held on October 6-7. beer.gif

You ask what kind of locals, it depends on what interests you. summer is coming and I catch butterflies myself. I have a car and I go to the forest myself every day. For example, such, but however it is easier to list what is not. This is a mourner and a peacock-eyed pear. These are the ones I definitely didn't meet. Write what you're interested in and I'll send it to you. At least try my best. And tropical(dry) ones are sent from Voronezh.

Romik thank you for the information.I will definitely go there in the fall. What about Saturnia? And what kind of trees and shrubs are needed?I have a hard time with trees, I don't recognize them. They haven't been released yet. We'll have to wait a bit.
