Just arrived from Primorye. We were in Andreevka, Khasansky district.
They brought some stuff. Lots of impressions!
I'll write to you one of these days and tell you more about it.

So, I'll start.
What I forget to write, I'll add later. In the beginning, we decided to go to Riazanovka, but there was no electricity. We were going to catch the light, and it was unacceptable. We went even further - to Andreevka. There they rented a house from the owners, and they also connected. Caught on the DRV-250. A lot of interesting things were flying: awesome crested birds of 15 species, a bunch of Rhiparoides bears, moth moth with a predominance of various greens. We caught the Camptoloma bear and the Clanis undulosa hawk moth (which we followed in the first place). I must say that this red-book hawk moth is the most common there at this time. Other hawk moth species included Smerinthus planus, Mimas christoffi, Marumba sperchius, Phyllosphingia dissimilis, Kentrochrysalis sp, Dolbina sp (I will define these species), Ampelophaga rubiginosa, Deilephila elpenor, Deilephila askoldensis, and Theretra japonica. Not very thick for hawkmoth, but quite decent cool.gif
During the day, of course, they also caught it. Nothing particularly unique was caught - the places are a little off, but there are pigeon-tailed birds of the genus Japonica.
The beetles were less fortunate: from the genus Carabus, only the banal canaliculatus, quite a few smaragdinus, billbergi, granulatus. Already before leaving, the wife caught a mustache Gotcha.
In general, impressions-a lot! jump.gif
And now - SPECIAL THANKS TO THE FORUM!!! jump.gif
It was here that I saw a photo of the hawk moth Clanis undulosa in the category "who is this", suggested who it was and wanted to catch this hawk moth myself. My wife supported the idea and the dream came true. We still want to go.
If anyone has any questions, please contact us.

Pavel, have you ever been overcome by the promised ticks and other rubbish?smile.gif

And how were things with other beetles: zlatkami, plates, steeds?

Thank you.

31.07.2006 10:36, Pavel Morozov

Of the lamellar sawyers, there are bronzes and crunchies (I haven't determined them yet). I got one horse, it looks like our hybrida, but I didn't get any gold coins. To be honest, I focused more on butterflies.

Three times I was attacked by a tick, I always managed to notice it during the game. There, as I noticed, they like protected from the wind, well-warmed, but damp places. In order not to put them on yourself, you do not need to climb a lot on bushes and high grass. It is not necessary to climb there at all - everything flies on the roads or on the roadsides. Go and swing your net. There are no ticks on the hills near the sea.

The weather was good, warm, and one day it was rainy. There were no terrible typhoons promised by one forum member. Just because a person has been caught in such weather conditions once doesn't mean that everyone else will necessarily get caught in a typhoon, etc.
The snakes didn't bother me. How many roamed - saw only one small skidder. No cottonmouths or vipers. Locals say that these reptiles become more active in them by the end of summer. Horseflies are numerous, but indecisive. So, they curl, but they don't want to bite.

31.07.2006 11:02, Frantic

Nda, 3 times is not much. Moscow region level:). I was very successfully attacked by one of them near Dnepropetrovsk this year:-). So the comrade clearly threatened not only for good reasons.. I immediately thought so for some reason:). It was a pity that there wasn't much of a bug.. And nothing came to light?

By the way, why didn't you choose the village of Kamenushka for your base? In the early 90's it was the main stronghold of Muscovites:)

31.07.2006 12:56, Pavel Morozov

The trip was made specifically for the hawk moth Clanis undulosa, and it is only in the Khasansky district. The light of the crunchers flew and once a female horned cat, probably Dybowski.

31.07.2006 13:18, Frantic

Clear. Hawk moth is cute:). It would be interesting to display it... And the beetle, apparently, still goes to the FAR East en masse in June (as well as almost everywhere:)) .

31.07.2006 13:38, Pavel Morozov

I've heard that you can feed this hawk moth on our acacia tree.

01.08.2006 13:43, Frantic

Yes, I also know that some Far Eastern and even tropical hawkmoth and peacock eyes are normally reared on plants near Moscow (essno, everything is individual and depends on the type of both insect and plant:)). In principle, even with our hawk moth it is interesting to tinker. But, alas, to do this, you need to have constant access to the feed. plant.. Even a banal bedstraw. And I, for example, live in the city center:)))

I will continue about Primorye.
We also brought a caterpillar of the cool hawk moth Sphecodina caudata. It seems to have started pupating, but it died. In natural conditions, the caterpillar feeds on Amur grapes (Vitis amurens), on which it was caught. A large number of caterpillars of cocoonworms of the genus Euthrix (potatoria, laeta, albomaculata - not yet known) were found. We brought a couple of cocoons, and we'll see if they come out.
About khvostostets maak.
Last year, there were only a few of them in Kaimanovka near Ussuriysk. This year we saw them twice - one on the hills near Vityaz Bay, the other on the way back to Vladivostok in the area of the Kedrovaya Pad Nature Reserve on a wet roadside.
And about the butterfly Amureana schrenckii I will tell you the following: On the way from Vladivostok, they were full of them on the roadsides in wet areas, they literally walked. And in Andreevka, although there were not much less of them, they were timid there and flew mostly high. It's good that I have a series from Kaimanovka. there was no shortage of other perelivnits, bationniki and pestrushki.
It was fun to collect thick-headed Aeromachus inachus. These small, nondescript butterflies quickly flew very low above the ground and landed on the wet ground. It was hard to see them clearly. Instead of aiming the net, you had to quickly sweep along the road puddles, holding the net above the ground. You run around like that, look in the net , and there's a couple of them.

Morozzz
This is you been quite a bit. Just a little bit. In parallel, I was in Troitsa, and then in the Shkotovsky district for more than a month - only on August 7, I returned. Everything is 2 weeks behind-both the flowering of trees and the flight of insects. The same tail-carrier Maaka even in early August flew extremely sparsely (i.e., not in "herds", as usual) That's why you caught so little. But now the flight of butterflies and beetles is simply incredible because of the established abnormal heat. I didn't take any photos on purpose, but I'll show you about a dozen funny insects sometime. In the same Riazanovka, delicacies (Tenomerga) and Omophron from ground beetles flew. I don't say anything about the scoop at all. That is, as I predicted, July for the trip, although it brought a lot of impressions, but the true rarities this year are not for this month. Last year, for example, July was warm, and even in the area of Kievka, students caught two danaids.

Yes, there were no typhoons in July, but just after your departure, one hit the south of Primorye - not much, but enough to spoil the life of tent campers. It's just a matter of luck. With electricity in Ryazanovka - at the biological station it was (although sometimes turned off).

PS By the way-do not believe in the inactivity of local horseflies: their activity is directly proportional to the temperature of the air. Now, when you are over 30, you can suffer a lot. Considering that there are more than 40 species of horseflies in Primorye, including the largest in the Russian Federation Tabanus chrysurus with a length of 28 mm, I can report that my bites personally do not heal for a week. I remember how we were attacked by a flock of horseflies in Posiete-we sat for two hours in the sea water, waiting for the heat to subside.

08.08.2006 21:40, Pavel Morozov

Well, about "we were just a little bit" - I will say that if it weren't for work, we would be happy to stay there until the fall.
As for horseflies, haven't you ever been to the moors? Unas in Andreevka IT WAS INFERNAL, HOT, we were tanned like pigs. Still, the horseflies there are not comparable to those in Tver, for example.
If you think that there were not enough butterflies in July, I do not know, under the lamp the sheet was covered with a "thick layer" of insects.
What they wanted to catch, they caught, What is delicious for you, is not at all interesting for me, sorry, of all the carabids, I understand more or less the carabuses themselves. There were other priorities, goals, and "goodies" that were caught in large numbers.
Anyway, thank you for your advice. Only, I'm afraid the typhoon is a sore subject for you.

09.08.2006 6:33, Juglans

So the MEP from Andreevka is just a stone's throw away - it's not too hot yet! The departure of many horseflies was delayed this year for the same reasons (and this is luck). It's the same with woodlice. However, I haven't been to Perm, so I can't compare it.
It was not only about beetles, but also about butterflies. Although the fact that the collector did not get more rare species, it is even pleasing. A strong typhoon is something that any visiting entomologist remembers for the rest of his life, and I have seen dozens of strong typhoons when not only individual tents with mattresses, but also museum collections were under water.

Here is a small piece of news that may be useful for those who are going to visit Primorye again: the Regional Duma adopted a law on border areas, in which visiting a number of territories (primarily located in the Khasansky district) for residents from other regions of the country requires a special permit, which can be obtained free of charge in Vladivostok. Residents of Primorye themselves will be forced to travel along the coast with a passport.

And where exactly is this permission obtained?
In the police department, or the regional administration?

09.08.2006 11:17, Juglans

It seems to be in the local representative office of the FSB. I'll find out more and let you know.

09.08.2006 11:30, Juglans

Order "On the limits of the border zone in the territory of Primorsky Krai"
......
Checkpoints for issuing passes are located at the Border Department on Svetlanskaya Street, at the Vladivostok checkpoint in the building of the former Pogranichnik Hotel. However, it is not necessary to obtain permits before the law takes effect.

09.08.2006 13:57, Pavel Morozov

Previously, permits to stay in the border zone could be obtained from the local police department. Our (Muscovites) presented business trips from MOIP and caught themselves quite calmly. But that was earlier.
By the way, when we took the Zarubinsk bus from Vladivostok and back, we were stopped and checked in the locality of Gusevka (on the border of the Khasansky district). A border guard and a traffic cop came in, took a quick look at the bus, checked the documents of two men (one was in a military uniform, the other just looked untidy). Most likely, border guards will track Chinese people, deserters, and poachers. On the latter, the border guards and the police probably have their own orientations.

The police on the M-60 highway almost from the first of August began to collect "tribute" for attempts to enter the already border territory, although they have no right. For residents of the Khabarovsk Territory, a pass can be obtained in Khabarovsk. By the way, the fine is 500 rubles. But in general, probably there should be no problems with omissions, only problems will increase. Yes, they say passes will be 100 rubles, maybe they are lying.

10.08.2006 4:57, Juglans

Yesterday, on local TV, a representative of the border guards said that until the end of the year, the order of visits remains the same.

This year I had the same case of not the edge of fiction. For the first time, I decided to explore water meadows for ground beetle fauna. I came for the first time to check the traps, I look, and several of them are trampled (rather even rammed) into the ground. Local aborigines grazed cows in this meadow. I look at the damaged traps and think-should I pull them out or not? Still decided to pull it out. I open the first one and then several large beetles fall out of it. I couldn't believe it at first… 6 copies of Carabus maacki at once!!! This species is widespread to the south (in Primorye), and in our country it has long been considered a ghost species. For all the time of research in the Amur region, only 2 copies were collected. At first, I was ready to believe in aliens or Bigfoot rather than in the reality of what was happening. In total, we managed to collect about 40 copies during the season.

You're a nice man, Dinusik! I, too, was once surprised by various interesting things that are not typical for a particular region, but now I have stopped. You'll get used frown.gifto it too

By the way, dear carabidologists, look at the ground, what it's like to bury traps. And the most offensive thing is that the traps set closer to the shore were dug by crows the next day, and I used to see them only stealing beetles, and then they also poked cups and scattered them.

26.07.2007 4:35, Vadim Yakubovich

By the way, an interesting shot, July, 2005, Verkhnebureinsky district, Dublikan river. Gray mass was once a hare, perelivnitsy at the bottom right actively drink from the eye socket, and at the same time they are the only "dead eaters", I did not find any beetles, yes, well, naturally, even fly larvae.
