I apologize for my curiosity: what is the "meaning" of the question?
I would like to know the name of the plant that this caterpillar eats.

We returned from a two-week trip to Buryatia. A well-coordinated group of me, Mikhail, Viktor and Vadim tried to get interesting bears. Attempts were futile frown.gifNeed clearly medveditsoiskatel smile.gifBut pleased with the scoops, there was an interesting "day". A little more detail...
Of the bears, 13 species were found, mostly banal. Of the relatively rare ones, quenzel, kindermani and cecilia were each caught. The rest was in quantity. During the day, Parnassus Eversman, Phoebus, and Stubik flew simultaneously in the same clearing. Eversmans are isolated, the rest are in the mass. Down in the mountain steppes, nomions came out, but Apolo was not seen. Of the scoops, I was most pleased with the variety of cucumbers, in my opinion more than 15 species. There weren't many beetles. More details about the trip will be written by Mikhail, and I post photos of my mattresses, half of the" day " on the mattresses, the rest in envelopes.

Creating a separate topic "Trip to Buryatia" for a detailed report on the trip. There I will also post the material as it unfolds.
Photos of mattresses removed in a separate topic:

Gorny Altai, Multinskie ozery, 18-31. 07. 2012

The Multin Lakes are so located that they are easily reached by hikers, but for our expedition of 40 people with a lot of equipment and all sorts of junk, throwing there turned into a long and not very pleasant action. In the village of Zamulta, where we arrived from Barnaul by bus, we first had to spend the night on the territory of a cowshed, and then throw ourselves on the northern shore of Lake Nizhnemultinsky on Gaz-66 (almost the only car that could overcome the impassability that separated us from the lake after a period of heavy rains). At the same time, the carrier, as usual, just before departure requested much more money than it was previously agreed. For the second time I go on an expedition to the Altai Mountains, and for the second time I am convinced that "Altai kidalovo" is an inevitable given mad.gif

From the point of view of radial hikes and collecting insects, this is probably the best location - from the isthmus there are trails running along the slopes of the ridges that border the lakes from the west and east. The isthmus itself is overgrown with forest, in which there are glades with flowering plants (mainly kiprei and Kuril tea), which are very few in other places on the shores of these lakes.

P1000305.JPG

The weather in the first days of the expedition was abnormally warm and clear for these places, but towards the middle of the expedition in the afternoon it began to rain steadily, which once was even accompanied by quite powerful hail.
P1000508.JPG

At the end of the expedition, I could already see the usual sight from last year's trip to Lake Teletskoye - clouds descending from the peaks of the surrounding mountains almost to the camp itself.

The most accessible and popular tourist attraction of this place is Shumy, a channel between the Middle and Lower Lakes.

P1000123.JPG
P1000125.JPG
P1000124.JPG
P1000157.JPG

On the pebbly shore of the Lower Lake, I found several species of nebria-N. catenulata, N. altaica, and I think a couple of species of Boreonebria. N. aenea was found in mountain streams flowing down steep slopes into lakes. Even from the ground beetles, from some point on, Calosoma suddenly began to come across (it looks very similar to denticolle, the legs of both males and females are not expanded) - and most often floating on the surface of water or on the very shore of lakes.

P1000607.JPG

Surprisingly, there were almost no carabuses - nothing came into the soil traps at all, and in general, only one specimen of C. hennigi was caught from the carabuses during the entire expedition.

On the slopes along the shores of the lakes, one could sometimes find subalpine meadows with flowering cypress, where a certain Oreina species was found in abundance, as well as, at times, barbels (Agapanthia, similar to altaica, Oberea depressa, Anastrangalia sequensi).

Several species of erebia (in particular, E. theano and E. jeniseiensis), Boloria altaica, Kuekenthaliella eugenia, Parnassius nomion, and P. apollo (both isolated) flew from these meadows, and phoebus occasionally flew from the mountain spurs. In forest clearings on the edges of forests on the isthmus, about the same thing flew (except for Phoebus), plus Polygonia vaualbum, P. c-album and P. interposita, several species of whiteflies, pigeons (Aricia allous, Vaccinia).

P1000466.JPG
P1000482.JPG
P1000476.JPG
P1000338.JPG

Of the beetles on the flowers, there were many different color variations of Anastrangalia sequensi and Gnathacmaeops pratensis, Evodinellus borealis, Anthaxia quadripunctata. In the camp itself, meanwhile, Buprestis rustica, B. strigosa, Chrysobothris chrysostigma, Monochamus sutor, M. impluviatus flew. Coccinella nivicola was found in the mass, especially in sediments on the shore of Lake Nizhni. Among the bronzes in these places, Cetonia aurata and Potosia metallica were found in small quantities, and, to my endless surprise, Oxythyrea funesta (which I had previously sincerely considered a purely European species that did not go beyond the Urals, especially in mountainous regions).

P1000301.JPG
P1000286.JPG

Fishing for light, due to problems with the generator, was done only once, it was not so hot, almost nothing flew at all to the lamps illuminating the camp.

Around the camp there were chipmunks, a variety of mouse-like rodents (which at night, and sometimes in broad daylight, climbed into tents with food), shrews (which I came across in soil traps along with beetles), on kurumniki-red pika. Right on the very territory of the camp lived absolutely not afraid of people ermine. Of the snakes, there were only vipers, and then quite a few.

Near the camp, a kind of honeysuckle with edible berries was plentiful, and towards the end of our stay, black currants and gooseberries were ripe.

And in this area there were a lot of crosses of the most diverse appearance:

One day I managed to climb to an altitude of 2800 m (the lakes themselves are at 1650 m). At this altitude, more Phoebes were already flying, a slightly different composition of erebians and mother-of-pearl birds, as well as urticaria, which were almost absent at the height of the lakes. On the way up, there were quartz outcrops here and there. Some small, rather peculiar-looking malachyid was crawling on large rocks, probably something like Troglocollops.

Lower and Middle Multin Lakes are located outside the territory of the Katun Nature Reserve, the border of which runs south of the Middle One, on the shore of which there is a cordon of the reserve. Even when planning the expedition, we agreed with the management of the reserve about cooperation (in particular, about collecting and transferring to the reserve a small collection of local insects and herbarium), but despite this, when it came to the radial hike to the Transverse Lake (located on the territory of the reserve), we were still charged money on a general basis for staying on its territory, and not allowed to spend the night, as a result of which the acquaintance with the transverse lake was very fleeting.

On the way back, we stopped for the night on the outskirts of the village of Multa, and this place was again adjacent to the local cattle grazing area (is there a place where no one grazes?!). This time, during the parking lot, I did not waste time in vain, and collected a series of onthophagus and aphodius, as well as several hefty, somewhat similar to teliphones, haymakers

With great photos, your report started with Altai scammers mad.gifand ended with the ubiquitous cows frown.gif. Is everything really so bad in our country? wall.gif Isn't this your second trip to these places? smile.gif

smile.gifYes, last year I was in another part of Gorny Altai - on Lake Teletskoye, and during that expedition there were also cases similar to those described in this report wink.gif

In addition, I had a chance to talk to the head of the student practice of the Geography Department of Saratov University, who was standing nearby, who traveled quite a lot with his students in this region, and, as it turned out, he also encountered similar situations more than once. Probably, the reason lies in the peculiarities of the region - a very popular (and absolutely deserved) place among tourists (i.e., a large turnover of tourist money), coupled with a small, sometimes almost non-existent competition among organizations providing services to tourists and their frankly non-Samurai code of honor, often generates arbitrariness. For this phenomenon, you can even introduce a special term - "financial pollution" umnik.gif

As for the behavior of the reserve administration-well, you can probably understand them, the reserve is probably poorly funded, so they compensate for this with the measures available to them. But, nevertheless, we came to them in the status of an ecological expedition of the MSU biofactory Faculty, offered scientific cooperation, but they did not need it, although initially, during the correspondence preceding the trip, they claimed the opposite...

In general, I apologize if the report raised too many negative points, and if it offended anyone's feelings. But still, since I am writing a report here, it is worth mentioning this so that those who read this report at least have a rough idea of what they can expect if they travel to these places. This is probably one of the most important functions of such reports.

And, yes, there were enough positive moments in the expedition, too. The stunning beauty of the Multin Lakes and the insects that live here were worth visiting these places! cool.gif

By the way, we were in the Belukha region from August 18 to August 31. The goal was more tourist, but I also took it for fishing with me. This was a discovery for me, but apparently, the end of August, Altai and butterflies are incompatible things. I thought that at least I would have time to catch the late types of jaundice and erebus, what kind of Parnassus are there?.. And so. There is nothing in Alpika or higher. It's not just anything. AND NO-TH-TH. And not in Alpika either. And this is not a one-day walk. And in good weather (then only got worse). For the first time in my life, I didn't bring anything with me.
