In the Crimea, both species love not so much the normal steppe, but deposits and all sorts of areas with disturbed vegetation.
Ausonia - the most common species, in some places-the most widespread whitefly. It doesn't need saline areas. Most numerous in the second half of April.
Euphemism - from year to year can occur in different places. Likes plowed places - roadsides, the outskirts of forest belts, etc. It is also found on deposits. It is rare in the virgin steppe. It flies from late April to mid-May.
But the euphemism is only found in the Northern Crimea?
And I probably really confuse Ausonia with Zorka or edusa. According to the Red Book, it should be found in the ravine, which I often go to.

According to old data, the eupheme is also known from the Kerch Peninsula. But I couldn't find her there, despite my best efforts. Most likely, it, like other species, is affected by the general desiccation of the climate, and its ranges are shrinking.
Ausonia is really easy to confuse with edusa. But together with Zorka, she does not fly with us. Ausonia flies only in open areas, and zorka only in the forest.

We have Zorka flying along the gullies, and in the Aleshkovsky sands on the Kakhovskaya arena among the pines. It is also found in the park of G. N. Kakhovka.

In the Crimea, on the Kerch Peninsula, the eupheme is found on the Kazantip, both in front of the Cape, and in the central part. I fully agree on biotopes, but I don't think it's correct to talk about climate drying up as a reason for reducing the range.
When you know all three types, it's hard to confuse them, even in flight. We have Ausonia only in the Azov Sea region, but there are places where all three species are found.

Are these personal observations? What year was the last discovery made?

The eupheme is found on Kazantip, both in front of the Cape, and in the central part.

Materials on the Lepidoptera fauna Kazantipsky Nature Reserve.

In this publication, there is nothing about "both in front of Mysov and in the central part", moreover, there is no material at all, only links.
On the links-an indication of the only female in 1984 and the collection of Nekrutenko in 1981.

Quote from the given source:
***4. Zegris eupheme (Esper, 1805). May, very rare-background, steppe biotopes, deposits, roadsides. Caterpillar in the inflorescences of the eastern gulyavnik (Sysimbrium orientale L.), the pupa has a summer-winter diapause. For the Kazantip, it was indicated several times by various authors (Nekrutenko, 1985; Budashkin, 1987; Chervona kniga Ukrainy, 1994).
In this publication, there is nothing about "both in front of the Cape and in the central part",

In the same place, at the beginning of the article, the places of collection and registration are also given. The fact that I specified them for this type, I know from the author of this work.
Mace-whiskered lepidoptera were taken into account during day excursions, each of which, as a rule, surveyed a significant part of the untouched steppe biotopes located along the perimeter of the cape. At the same time, in the first years of our visits (80's-early 90's), such almost untouched natural communities still existed in the near (southwestern) part of the cape adjacent to the village of Mysovoe.
moreover, no material is provided at all, only links.

At the beginning of the article:
The system and nomenclature in the list of Kazantip fauna Lepidoptera presented below correspond to modern requirements (Budashkin, 2004). The occurrence and abundance (population density) of individual lepidopteran species were estimated jointly according to the scheme developed by us in the same study. At the same time, we used five categories of characteristics of these parameters. The first of them - ” very rare " - differs from the next four in that such species were not constantly present in the Kazantip lepidopteran fauna (they were not recorded every year during the entire observation period) and had the lowest abundance indicators-conditionally 0.01-0.1 specimens/unit. accounting records. The remaining four categories, on the contrary, characterize the abundance of permanent fauna species: "rare” - when the population density is 0.1-1 ind. / unit of accounting;" ordinary” - 1-10 ind./unit."background “ - 10-100 copies/unit of accounting;” mass" - more than 100 copies/unit.accounting records. The unit of accounting is 1 hour of the excursion route in the daytime.
From the quotation given at the beginning, it follows that the species occurs from 1984 to 2006 in the number from 0.01-0.1 specimens to 10-100 specimens per hour of the excursion route.
only links.
On the links-an indication of the only female in 1984 and the collection of Nekrutenko in 1981.

References point to the literature in which this species is given for the Kazantip and, of course, were not the basis for giving abundance.

Along the banks of the Siwash, but there are border guards there now, probably everywhere, you can't just walk around.

Yeahfrown.gif. I really wanted to go out and catch at least a dozen. Maybe closer somewhere in the Kherson region, if you walk along the banks. I looked at old maps of finds of this type, it seems that there is another place where the Dnieper flows into the Black Sea) But I do not know for sure if there is something there or not?

15.12.2015 17:21, Wave Storm

Nick444444, what are these old find maps like? I was just looking at the place where the Dnieper flows into the Black Sea (estuary) in the area of Stanislav and Shirokaya Balka villages. According to the Red Data Book of Ukraine, it should be there. Only I didn't see it or didn't notice it.

I think it may still be on the island of Jarylgach.

Well, I meant the Red Book by the second cards lol.gif
There are still a couple of interesting places in the Red Book)
But the most interesting thing is that there is still some mysterious point in the south of the Kharkiv region, I don't know anything about it, maybe there is something there?

In the circled circle in the Kherson region, the situation is supposed to be as follows:
points from left to right:
1) the vicinity of the village of Kalanchak, most likely an irrigation canal from above;
2) Askania-Nova + an irrigation canal from above;
3) the vicinity of the village of Frunze, most likely the Bolshye Serogozy gully and Agaymanovsky pod. But it seems to be plowed very much.

And what is the situation with the number of species there? Does it make sense to go to the first two places in late April or early May for a view (collect at least 3-5 copies)?

Yes, I was not there, I just wrote down what is in the area of these points.
Still, I want to look for more on the estuary.

It is very interesting where the data on these maps comes from, if only a narrow strip near the isthmus is indicated on the Okoem website for the Crimea, and there is somehow less doubt about this, and I have never noticed them in our area. All dawns yes dawns wink.gif

Where there is plowing, there are often exuberant cruciferous weeds = forage plants. Just the thing! smile.gif

On the site for the Crimea, the data of the site's author, and in the Red Book of Ukraine, the data of Ivy, who processed all the literature on this species and received data from a dozen people.
The species is subject to large population fluctuations over the years. In places where it may be a background species in some years, it may not be observed at all in other years. This is as luck would have it, the type of year is short, and therefore the weather factor affects very much the beginning of the summer time. And having met in one year a massive year in the middle of May, in another year at the same time the last broken females.
The view of open spaces of steppes and semi-deserts has adapted to strong winds. the butterfly's flight is faster than all whiteflies, and it can fly faster against the wind than in the wind smile.gif Wing shape has a difference in aerodynamics from other types of whiteflies.

Well I do not know. How data is collected in the CC, I can judge by polyxene, in our area it is just a darkness, and in the CC there are three points and those are "outdated", based on them I generally thought that this is rare and it is unlikely that you can find it)) at the same time, from somewhere there are points along the Dnieper floodplains where I also often visited, so I didn't see polyxene there and in principle they can't be there in theory.

15.12.2015 21:05, Alexandr Zhakov

The absence of points on the map does not indicate that the view is missing, but that there is no information about its location there. Well, there are no people in your area who could give a real picture of the spread of the species in your area. Before the release of the Red Book, the Ministry of Ecology sent out special questionnaires on red species and collected all the data by region. The authors of the essays, in turn, collected information on their own, All the points in the Zaporozhye region that I gave were included in the CC (almost all smile.gif)

15.12.2015 21:19, Hierophis

And how do they accept points there, without any material at all, so relying on authority?
Just not so much interesting data from where the view is, and it is not on the QC, but from where the view is on the QC, and there it is, hmm.. as if not wink.gif
Yes, and during the time that was between the first and second CC, and it seems to be 13 years, specialized specialists could visit at least the vicinity of their regional centers, and monitor there, although.. I understand them, why climb the gullies when and so-it will come down, and drip

Well, yes, it is clear, not for nothing that the species of the Red Book, "disappearing", well, they were, and then they disappeared, especially polyxenes, and zergis, I look, also there..

What happened to Polixena?

I'm afraid that if God forbid some dam on the Dnieper breaks, then all the polyxenes are finished.

16.12.2015 2:09, Nick444444

Well, if things are not so good with Zegris eupheme, then I'll start talking about Euchloe ausonia! Places almost the same, Kherson region + Odessa region! Are there any prospects to visit any of these places on the map?! Thank you in advance!)

Why would it burst?
And if it breaks, then it is unlikely that anything particularly bad will happen to polyxenes in this case, not very much worse than with excessive snowmelt or heavy rain.

In the specific case of polyxena, it happened that some of the points where it lives are located in the Dnieper plavni and Gilea. That's about where we saw lemongrass. So I wonder where in such a place - polyxenes)))

If it breaks, for example, the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station, then the water will flood most of my city, and it will still stand for about 2 weeks. And just polyxenes under water will be all (people, however, can also be under water).

And why can't they be found in the Dnieper swamps and where we saw lemongrass plants? They are also found on islands near the village of Korsunka, where sandy areas are adjacent to meadows and lakes. Solontsy is quite a similar place.

In the middle of the Kherson region-yes, it looks like where I live.
But it's probably better to watch it here:

http://books.menr.gov.ua/Default.aspx?tabid=Map

There is a point of Ausonia near the village of Gornostayevka.
If you believe this map, then Aglia tau is found near Sergeevka, and in the vicinity of Tsyurupinsk and Naked Pier Perelivnitsa Metis!

What is on the right, a group of points is the Zaporozhye region near the Molochny and Utlyuksky estuaries. Ausonia was stable, and Euphema was also encountered. To Melitopol by train, and then by bus.

Good day to all!

What butterflies can be found now in poplar groves, poplar plantations, poplar forest belts, poplar forests, in a word? I understand, of course. that they are on poplars, I even know what types, but somehow I have unsuccessful attacks pass. I don't find anything.

Or should I look for something among the willows?

Old poplars usually have a lot of hollows, and just at this time, when the weather is right, winter nymphalids are climbing together. This also applies to Eve.

But if someone else is interested in information about Zegris eupheme, then in the Kizilsky district in the very south of the Chelyabinsk region, but for Zegris eupheme this is a steep north, my friend and I collected a male on July 1, 2000, quite fresh!!! Three years later, they were assembled in the same place on June 10, 2003. So late in the Southern Urals, at the northernmost border of its range, it flies...

On gorgon, I can say in Ukraine, caught once in Proval, Luhansk region (near the Rostov region), 26-28.05 2010, flew, but in most cases already broken, hebe, I think, like us, the end of April-mid-May.
