Hello, fellow OS lovers. Please tell me if it is possible to humanely get rid of a hornet's nest on the balcony in a city apartment. The nest size is 5-7 cm in diameter. Photos are attached. For example, is it possible to carefully cut the nest at night into a breathable container (for example, a jar with a gauze lid) in order to later transfer it to a new living space away, for example, a hollow tree or aba like in the nearest park, with the hope of survival of madame and her surroundings? Or will they die? Or is it such happiness, the scale of which we unhappy people do not appreciate and we need to change our attitude to the phenomenon? We have a cat who loves the balcony and there are fears for dramatic conflicts not in favor of the cat, and he is now in favor. Please respond.

I suggest you leave him there, don't worry about the cat.

You are terribly lucky, type on the Internet: Dolichovespula saxonica or chwashii's social wasps.

I went to the forest today to check on the wasps:
I haven't been there for a long time.. the colonies have grown. the first is in a birch trunk.. at first I thought that there was no one, not a single wasp was sitting at the entrance, I knocked.. about 10 pieces flew out.. and in my opinion it's not Germanic..
the second nest is in the ground (photos below are attached), where the colony also grows normally. Periodically flies flies 3-4 wasps
and hornets how many did not drum on the tree, and did not reach, although they may not have heard just a hollow tree at a height of 3x mert all the same

(I dug up their mink a little, so as not to lose it)

Hello to all etnomologists! I'm new to the forum, but I've been working on oss for almost half a year. Recently I decided to create my own website - "Public wasps of the Lviv region"- http://vespidae2012.narod.ru. I hope you will find the site's information and photo galleries interesting.
Who is from the Lviv region or from Ukraine - I can post photos of the os on the site if you want)
If you have any questions about the OS, I am ready to answer them with joy smile.gif

I've been working on them for five years, so I don't have any questions.By the way ,you have a hornet Vespa crabro, and we have a subspecies Vespa crabro crabro. You have almost everything repeated from the site "public wasps of Chuvashia"

20.06.2012 11:58, Роман Ракочий

Evgeny Martynov is a good friend of mine, he is the curator, his design. And how does Vespa crabro crabro differ from ours?

20.06.2012 12:36, vespa crabro

The fact that our krabro krabro thorax is black, and you have it like with two reddish stripes.

22.06.2012 17:27, vespa crabro

The nymph's nest is actively being built, and workers have stuck at least 20 more cells and adjusted the rest.As you can see in the photo, larger cells have already appeared(for females and males). smile.gif

Hello.
Greetings to OS lovers! it turns out that they are different...
But I have a nest appeared in the apartment, just like in the first message of the topic. Young, as I understand it. In the morning, they saw the uterus in the apartment, thought it had accidentally flown in, and caught it with a net through the window. And in the evening the nest was discovered.
How to remove it so that the nest is not damaged, and the most not to be bitten? I was on sick leave for a wasp sting three years ago frown.gif

And it is also very interesting, what are you attracted to wasps? Is it interesting to watch them? But it's also quite dangerous... For the first time I saw people who are fond of biting insects smile.gif

22.06.2012 19:48, vespa crabro

You will hit the nest with a frying pan when the uterus flies in, because you are allergic, better get rid of it.And wasps attract me because it is interesting to watch them as they take care of the offspring, as they work for the continuation of the genus, I really like their diverse color, etc.It won't be dangerous if you handle them carefully.

22.06.2012 21:52, Роман Ракочий

Of course, you need to destroy the nest, but release the uterus if possible and close the windows, etc. She will probably start building a new nest in a new place.)))

22.06.2012 22:10, Hierophis

People are lucky!!!

And we have very few oss this year, in general sveh, and polistov and vespul. German wasps are very rare to encounter.

Roman Rakochy - but hardly, the fact is that wasps are very sensitive to timing, if the uterus re-lays the honeycomb, now, the nest will not have time to grow queens and males. I have often found nests in which the wasps did not have time to lay their uterine combs, or they were very small.
Probably these are late nests.

And with a frying pan on the nest - this is terriblesmile.gif, you just need to put it in a bag at night with the uterus, and take it outside, put it in some box, or somewhere else in a suitable place.
In general, it is very shitty, since the wasps are very careful, what prompted the wasp to make a nest in the room is unclear. It is also unclear how she was engaged in construction and foraging, because for this you need to have free access to the street.

Roman Rakoczy, by the way, I found the colony of Vespula Rufa once, so I can tell you about it. First, I immediately noticed their incredible peacefulness! It was just incredible - in fact, in a nest with already 5 tiers of honeycombs, you could chop with a stick about 1 meter long. Their nest structure is the same as that of German wasps or common wasps, but their paper is brown! It was quite amazing.
Otherwise, they have all the same - uterine combs, males in working cells, the nest was under the stove, the stove on the ground. The socket diameter was approx 20cm.

22.06.2012 22:35, vespa crabro

The queen of almost any wasp can't start a nest again, only rebuild the remains of the nest(checked!)wink.gif

I can argue about the peacefulness of redheads, because they are aggressive.

22.06.2012 22:58, Роман Ракочий

Back in the spring, I hung the so-called "hornets" on an oak tree at the edge of the forest. I really wanted to populate the hornets in order to study the development cycle and just watch the colony and post information on the site. Today I arrived (before this, I repeatedly came to check if the hornets were settled), I look for 5 minutes at the hornet's nest (on the left, yellow in the black hornet's nest, Saxon ones are already covered), there is nothing, when I already wanted to go, I looked at the hole-entrance, I see the orange head of the uterus)) I watched, got out of the hole, adjusted my mustache and climbed back in. Then after a minute it flew out, and after 5 minutes it came back again. I will go soon and try to take a picture of the female near the entrance, I will feed her, I will post it on the website))))

23.06.2012 5:33, Шеффлера

The funny thing is that no one seems to fly. Here in the morning only yesterday and saw the uterus. And so no os, no buzzing. When did you make it? Apparently, they are partisans-they work only when we are not at home smile.gif
Also in the kitchen, I found the nest that I started, the hemisphere with several cells frown.gifimmediately removed It, it's clear that it's empty.
When it gets dark, I'll clean up. I want to cut off the attachment point with a knife, taking the nest with several layers of fabric.
But it's scary-they fly to sleep at night. And if you clean it up during the day, they'll come looking for the nest and get angry that it's not there...

23.06.2012 5:36, Шеффлера

How do I close my windows in the summer? frown.gif

Wasps do not sleep, they only fold their wings along the abdomen for a few seconds, which is why they are called folding wings. When you remove the nest, the wasp will search for it for a long time, but will not bite anyone, then it will fly wink.gifaway

23.06.2012 9:22, Роман Ракочий

Judging by the reviews, you have a Saxon wasp. Scheffler, have you seen the color of the wasp? If the wasp is large with red and yellow, then it is average, and if it is small with black and yellow, then most likely it is Saxon. Wasp queens are not aggressive, so workers protect the nest, because their mission is to make and nurse the brood. The mission of the uterus is to lay eggs)

24.06.2012 14:45, Шеффлера

We only have black and yellow wasps flying around. We live in Siberia smile.gif

The nest could not be carefully removed, and the upper capsule broke. Inside the cell, there are several black nuts, and three cells in white cocoons.
I planted the nest in the bushes.

24.06.2012 17:01, Роман Ракочий

Where's the female?"

24.06.2012 17:05, Шеффлера

and it seems that the day before yesterday we released it through the window smile.gif

24.06.2012 21:24, vespa crabro

Black nuts are rotten larvae in the honeycomb, it is better to throw out the nest it has no more chances.

24.06.2012 22:04, Роман Ракочий

Chances and so it would not be and if the larvae were alive-the females are not present frown.gif

In the city in the forest we have a lot of wasps, as it turned out, but at the dacha now I almost do not observe anyone, that year there was a sea of polistov, and now only empty nests, I saw 4 pieces and all are abandoned.. where did everyone go confused.gif

I went to the forest again today to visit my favorite colonies.: the hornets, where I originally saw the queen, apparently something went wrong, I did not meet any individuals there, but while I was looking at the wasp nest, I found a new hornet's nest, and about a meter from the wasps! when they grow, they won't kill each other??

dy there chyut whether not less than a meter from their nest

Here's another photo!!The nest is actively being built, the wasps have stripped almost everything off the wood. The first male was singing.Cocoons have become larger-this means that females will come out.

And today I found a German wasp's nest in the country. That's lucky. I warned all my friends about the aggressiveness of this species and told them to stay away from the burrow. Here's a photo - http://vespidae2012.narod.ru/germanica_in_ground.html =)

I also tasted a colony of common wasp, which I noticed on June 21. Here are the last 2 photos-taken today - http://vespidae2012.narod.ru/vulgaris_in_ground.html)
