Ohhh...can you take some pictures?
We still have flood rainsfrown.gif, but before the rains began, I saw queen bumblebees, but there were no wasps.

25.04.2013 21:42, Hierophis

And there is nothing special to take pictures of, the nest is in the ground, the uterus flies in and out, you should try to take a picture of the uterus.
And the rain yes, I looked, you are planning to have solid rains, both on the weekend and next week, too. We had it like this in early April.

25.04.2013 21:46, vespa crabro

I already have a nest on my balcony, like a vulgaris!!! jump.gif

Umm...how is it in the ground?

25.04.2013 21:59, Hierophis

Well, there is a tub of earth there, for flowers, very big, there is still a rotten stump in it, and under this stump the uterus has nested smile.gif

25.04.2013 22:14, vespa crabro

Lucky you)

25.04.2013 22:38, Hierophis

This is not all, luck will be 100% when the working wasps appear, otherwise it was already like this, the uterus settled in the crevices between the balconies, ours and the neighbor's(although this is not a very good option - after all, the nest can not be disassembled in winter), but I was still happy, but then the uterus disappeared and that was all.
Maybe the swifts were eaten, or something else died.

Still have bumblebees smile.gif

25.04.2013 23:09, vespa crabro

Oh,about bumblebees, I've heard that they can be kept in a regular box at home, but I don't know if that's realistic.

26.04.2013 8:26, Роман Ракочий

Hi, we have a lot of females, a lot of Germanic and vulgaris, I also met one Saxon female who was feeding on a willow inflorescence. I think we will have the first nests at the beginning of may

26.04.2013 8:32, vespa crabro

In Ukraine?Early May?I think you should have nests there in mid-April.

26.04.2013 9:23, Hierophis

vespa crabro, depending on where, and on the weather troubles depends, this year in Western Ukraine it was very cold in the spring, in early April there was still snow smile.gif

We often had polist nests laid at the end of March, but this year in mid-April there were no nests yet, in the first half of April it rained, it was very cold at night, and in the afternoon it was often only 15 or even lower.

I think that our first nests were laid starting from April 20, and the real summer times have just begun, this morning it was +15, and so in the morning it was +3 +7 all the time.
Polists will not build exactly at such T's.

26.04.2013 10:08, Hierophis

Just specially stood waiting on the balcony - flying uterus! smile.gif
So I decided to watch the foraging, while watching, I learned so much new about the inhabitants of the balcony ))
It turns out that osmium lives in the same stump in the gap, polist's uterus has settled between the balconies, rather dominuli, and titmice-kapets live in an old bag))))))

The queen flew out of the nest at 9: 35
returned 10 minutes later at 9: 45 with a hefty lump, apparently for the larvae it bit some flies smile.gifBarely flew, it was such a big lump..
And then.. she spent 20 whole minutes there in the nest doing something, probably feeding each larvasmile.gif, and finally flew out again at 10: 04.

And osmium, on the contrary, arrived with pollen on its paws, literally in 5 seconds it flew out without pollen .. and so it did not fly in 25 minutes, it takes a long time to collect pollen)))

26.04.2013 11:01, vespa crabro

The balcony is full of animalssmile.gif

26.04.2013 11:03, vespa crabro

We've never had so many animals here, and we don't think we will.

27.04.2013 16:57, Роман Ракочий

Hi guys. Today he was in our forest. In general, we have Saxon females clearly already hiding nests, I met two, while collecting pulp, I photographed one - http://vespidae2012.narod.ru/wood.html . The trees have already turned leaves, the greenery is growing very fast, the temperature was +28 today. When I left the forest, I saw a female germanica that was resting on a tree from the heat, I was lucky, I took high-quality photos - http://vespidae2012.narod.ru/germanica_queen_on_tree.html .

Hello everyone Finally, it's a good warm up, spring is late this year, the snow has been lying for a long time. smile.gif Now just a lot of queens fly. I decided to look for wasp nests near the house, while there are only two nests in the garden-one in an old box from the parcel and, today, another nest appeared, not far from the same box, to the left at the top under the roof. That box has been there for several years, I completely forgot about it, last year I remembered and found two old nests inside, one of wasps, the second of hornets, but only the uterine ones, not developed, I put them away and put the box again. And in the attic I wrote about last year, there are no nests yet, I just drilled a few extra holes in the boards to make it easier for the wasps to get in. Today I saw two hornets there, one flew out later, and the other just sat there, huddled in a corner, and almost didn't move. When I was there, another wasp flew in, examined several boards, and flew away, never returning, apparently she didn't like something. Oh, it would be great if there were hornets living there. I hope that this year there will be full-fledged nests, and not like last year, when all the queens died. frown.gif

Nazar, hi! Wow, you certainly definitely have more oss and more types! I'm still afraid to even look at the uterus that has settled on the balcony, I don't even come close, and I can't see what kind of uterus, German or vulgaris.
And even when the swifts squeak as much as scary, and these titmice kaike something suspicious-see and strive to skhrumat uterus ))))
I don't even dream about hornets, although I'm thinking of putting up a few houses in the places where they are found, while I still have time, in case I get lucky.

Here's what's interesting - I noticed from observations that the German wasps have somewhere around 20-25 cells of the uterus, but in the photo what kind of uterus curled up around the honeycomb? Is this the maximum of cells or will it still build?

27.04.2013 22:30, Роман Ракочий

Hello, Nazar. Very interesting nest) Lucky guy)
The first wasp is the glomerular one, a female Saxon wasp. The wasp that gets into the box is a female forest wasp.
Hierophis, a female Saxon, will still build cells, and quite a few. In the photo, the first stage of the nest, this is just the beginning. Very soon there will be a lot more cells.

27.04.2013 23:01, vespa crabro

Lucky for Ukrainefrown.gif
We have only flood rains in Moscow.I'll go to Tambov for the May holidays and look for nests there.

28.04.2013 0:18, Назар

Hierophis, houses are a good idea, so hurry up, I just put a box with a hole and, as practice has shown, it attracts wasps and hornets well.

Roman Rakochy, thank you for the information, I thought both were female Saxon wasps.

vespa crabro, while we are lucky, if only the uterus does not die, otherwise, unfortunately, this happens often.

By the way, under the same roof in the photo, on the left, there was already a nest for quite a long time, but the queen died as soon as she began to build it. But the barn that is in the photo, wasps for some reason do not like, for all the time of observation there were only two full-fledged large nests and one rudimentary.

28.04.2013 1:04, vespa crabro

But the barn that is in the photo, wasps for some reason do not like, for all the time of observation there were only two full-fledged large nests and one rudimentary.

Our wasps appreciate barns, attics, haylofts, etc.Every year I find 10 polist nests and 4 Saxon nests there.

28.04.2013 8:20, Коллекционер

and I have this year as the little OS (not met anyone except polistov), but! I noticed where there is a bumblebee mink , and maybe even two!)

28.04.2013 15:38, Роман Ракочий

Today I met three female wasps (middle, forest, Germanic). The wooden wall of the building served as a good bait. Who is interested, see the photo here - http://vespidae2012.narod.ru/wasps_queens.html

29.04.2013 12:38, adderley

I have all the fences in these settlements:

user posted image

Sometimes, when it gets too much, the janitor starts fighting them.

29.04.2013 18:23, Hierophis

Similar to polistov on the organization of the nest, and the appearance is similar smile.gifOnly the nest is somehow strangely photographed, thrown down probably.

My balcony uterus is flying jump.gif
It would also be interesting to know how much time passes from the nest bookmark to the first working OS, but the exact nest bookmark is not known. In theory, the wasp develops from egg to larva in about 15 days. But I didn't find any exact data anywhere, and I didn't observe it myself, maybe who knows how long wasps, polysts, Germanic and others develop?

There is a small cornice on the fence, and it hangs under it:

Yes, they fix the nests sloppily, nakoso somehow, and without a pronounced stalk.
And there are no other common wasps/bees there?

29.04.2013 21:25, adderley

There is such a thing, I haven't published three different types yet. Tomorrow will be here.

29.04.2013 21:38, vespa crabro

adderley, oh my God, always dreamed of having such an os)Do you live in Madagascar?

29.04.2013 21:40, vespa crabro

My polysts developed from an egg to a working individual, about 24 days))

Well, yes, in Madagascar. My janitor doesn't like these wasps, they bite him. If it was his will, he would deport everyone to you!

29.04.2013 21:52, vespa crabro

Have you ever been to Moscow?Would like to buy these os.

29.04.2013 21:57, adderley

I used to live in Moscow. Why do you ask?

I don't need these wasps - come up with a method of transportation and they are yours.

29.04.2013 21:59, vespa crabro

Yeah...there will be problems with transportation

29.04.2013 22:05, Hierophis

adderley, upload pictures of other operating systems, interesting smile.gif

vespa crabro, do you know the life cycle of those Madagascar wasps? Do they have a cyclical pattern, like polistov, or do they continuously produce females and males? If continuously, then you can fly to Madagascar and grab honeycombs with blockages without os at all, and then they will already multiply, then you will have to keep them in the room)))

29.04.2013 22:16, vespa crabro

Cyclical, of course,I don't know much, but I assume that they are perennial wasps.
Unfortunately, I probably won't get the OSfrown.gif, but in a year I may fly to Vietnam, where the species stock will probably be larger.

29.04.2013 22:18, Hierophis

vespa crabro, why is their honeycomb so small? Yes, and I can hardly imagine perennial paper nests, although it seems that German wasps in the tropics live in one nest for several years, but they probably build more and more new tiers in it, and then there is no such thing.

Damn, I can't find any info about them on the Internet weep.gif
But about Germanic true said, they are in the tropics lead a long-term lifestyle, and they are dominated by a large number of working individuals.

I went to the garden to see the wasps today, so far everything is fine, the uterus is alive, which pleases. smile.gif I moved the box a little and shone a flashlight inside (a box without a bottom), it turned out that there was not one socket in the box, but two! Strange, apparently two queens build nests separately, or is it still one wasp? I was also in that attic, when I came in, a wasp flew out to meet me (there is a hole above the door, covered with a grid with rather large cells). There were no new nests in the back of the attic, but I could see the rudimentary nest near the door in the back. I thought it was abandoned, but no, I waited a bit and a uterus flew through the net to him, this is what I saw when I entered the attic. It is interesting that on this side of the attic near the door there were never full-fledged nests, only rudimentary ones. In addition, I checked another place for wasps - the space between the barn doors under the same attic.
I cleaned the cobweb hole between the door halves there the day before yesterday, and today I found a new nest, which the female attached to an old, dilapidated large nest. Having found the wasp, I immediately closed the door, so that it would not interfere, tomorrow I will try to take a photo when it flies out. Thus, we managed to find three more nests. jump.gif

A wasp in the bud of its nest. The photo turned out badly, as I had to raise the sensitivity and shutter speed, since it's too dark there, and I didn't want to blind the wasp with a flash.

A female hornet in the attic. I noticed her on Saturday, sitting in the corner and hardly moving, not building a nest.

I took a photo of the nest between the doors, which I wrote about in the previous message. At first I wanted to wait for the wasp to fly out, but after waiting for a while, it didn't fly out, so I carefully opened the door and took a photo, the wasp was inside at that moment on an old nest.

Hello, Nazar. Interesting observations and nests!) The last photo is the same nest as in the old one, it clearly belongs to a common wasp (Vespula vulgaris), judging by the yellow shell of the nest. Saxon and forest wasps never build such "yellow" shells, they have mostly gray paper. I would be grateful for a photo of the female wasp who built that yellow nest. Then I will surely tell you what kind of wasp and features of this species)
