We have been watching the caterpillar with our children for more than a week.
She's growing fast, getting prettier.
We want to take her home so that a butterfly will appear. We even watched a movie about it and got inspired.
But, there are some doubts.
We don't know what kind of caterpillar it is.
Maybe this is the case when you shouldn't touch it at all?
Thanks!

Photos taken yesterday and today. Japan, Honshu Island, Saitama.
The length is more than 5 cm, the width of the widest part is more than 1.5 cm
. Sometimes it freezes, raising up about a third of the front part of the trunk. Sleeping?

Wow! It looks like you have a Maak swallowtail caterpillar! Try poking it with your finger - if it lets out "horns" (this is protection from predators), then it's definitely a sailboat! Very beautiful and large butterfly of the Far East, Japan. As I see it, it eats Amur Velvet (I'm not really into plants, but it looks a lot like it)? It's about to pupate, wait!

Please help me determine what kind of creature it is. Crawling from somewhere on the balcony. 1 - 1.5 cm long. Where could they have come from?

It all happened so fast, and ... a little unexpected for me.
So I didn't find the moment to go out. Just this

I noticed a few more testicles on that plant. However, yesterday there was a strong storm. If there is still anything left, I will watch the development again, and I will try not to miss any more important moments!

This caterpillar is not the tail-bearing Maak, but a sailfish from another genus-Graphium sarpedon (Linnaeus, 1758). Maaki's caterpillar is quite different. The plant in the photo is not velvet, but, apparently, also something from the Rutaceae family, it looks like some kind of citrus.

I don't know... But, by the way, the head color of an adult larva and a young one can be different. For example, in adults Arge pagana is yellow, in young people it is almost black.

Pupae are not very well defined from the photo. It looks like some kind of dustpan.
The conditions are normal, as for all pupae. Discussed in acc. the topic.

Digging up the beds, I meet a cluster of larvae (or are these worms?):
Dirty-gray color, about 2 cm long, thick as a match, with transverse constrictions, sedentary, but there are so many of them that the ground in this place seems to move. Under the magnifying glass, rare bristles can be distinguished.
Professing the principle of "do no harm", I try not to destroy unfamiliar creatures. But what if they are malicious pests?
You can't put a photo here.

There are many such organisms in the soil, preferably photos. The leading question is-how many legs did they have?

15.10.2012 15:01, фекла

Thank you for your feedback. Unfortunately, the camera doesn't pick up small items. These things are legless. Placed on a flat surface, they slowly crawl, leaning on their heads. I overreacted with the thickness - they are twice as thin as a match. They are semi-transparent, dirty-white in the lumen; there is a black stripe in the center. The head is small; the mouth can barely be distinguished through a magnifying glass by appendages that look like two canines that move.
I didn't find anything on Google...
