I didn't know in what section to create a theme, so I decided here. I apologize if you don't need it here.

I'm going to the Caucasus in two weeks. I will be located 50 km from Maikop, in the mountains and not far from Gelendzhik by the sea. I plan to catch a lot of interesting and large specimens: first of all, beetles and butterflies, as well as other insects if possible.

Please advise what traps to set. What are the most interesting representatives I can meet and catch?

I have already prepared a net, earth traps(large glasses, a spatula), as well as containers for collecting.
It is planned to catch beetles, butterflies, including night mantises.
1) What else can be used efficiently and conveniently?
2) Is it possible to meet a deer beetle there?!! how can I find it there?!!
3) Is it possible to meet solpuga there? How to catch it and where?
3) Should I try tree traps?

4) crown traps of course put. Maybe you'll catch something interesting

I doubt that now in the area of Gelendzhik you can catch something large, except for praying mantises. A rhinoceros beetle may come across by accident, but this is banal. Everything is burnt out there, the soil is stony and clayey, the forest is dry. Still, it's interesting to see the result. Choose, if possible, the wettest, shaded places in lowlands and fresh water, preferably on the northern slopes in gorges with deciduous forest, next to rotten stumps. That is, go to the nearest Dolmens, there are just such conditions.

There should also be more moths there. And on the coast, I didn't notice much activity.

If you do not disdain, try to set traps with fish, meat, manure (it is better to have more volumes), for dead eaters, staphylins and dung beetles, in different biotopes, and in open ones in the sun. Alternatively, put the dead meat in a container that is placed in the center of a basin of water, dug to the brim in the soil, and cover it with a piece of plywood on racks or any other shelter. Add a little fairy or soap to the water. The beetles will be clean.

Fermented fruit juice and pulp. That's just digging in this porridge is not very pleasant. For the purity of fees, it is advisable to divide the bait and retainer into two containers. Bait on top, inside the trap, retainer on the bottom, on the bottom. And there will still be a porridge of butterflies, flies and wasps.

Larvae are easy to find, harder to grow.
Beetles are easier to look for under a streetlight, and in nature you will only meet it by chance. smile.gif

You better catch small hydrophilic beetles in mountain streams under rocks and at the water's edge. It will be more useful.

The catch is still small. Back to the butterfly world. I haven't caught any decent beetles yet.
There must be larvae in the dust, right?
In the village, they put up a lot of poles with lanterns, not much flies on them.
I understand that you need to look for snappers under the rocks? I walked around in the thickets next to the local river - there are almost no stones. Bury the glass does not work - either stones or thickets that can not be dug.

What I managed to catch from the meadow on the mountain from the village of Beregovo. I used to catch mantises there before. I haven't found one there this year. frown.gif
I hung two bottle traps: crushed banana, beer, yeast, and sugar. During the day, except for flies, I didn't catch anything at all.
No luck yet with beetles frown.gif
