Stas, what do you do with your laundry? solution / brush ? there is a feeling that the photos are in an aquatic environment. Is that true?

I wash it simply in alcohol or ethyl acetate. Somewhere with dissecting needles, somewhere with paper strips. The brush for such a trifle is somehow not very suitable. I shoot dry beetles. The effect of the liquid can be a veil creates on the soap dish is removed.

you shouldn't be talking about brushes. I use squirrel 00 and pony minimal, and then cut at an angle of 45 % to one bristle wink.gifhere is more a question in razmochke. I'm soaking in the water with the fae. alcohol tans. and EA gives an unnatural shine, which is used by many sellers of carbuses, the main thing is not to overdo it, otherwise it starts to eat out the pigment wink.gif

In a dirt trap on the bank of the reservoir climbed such a "monster", and even hisses when it is touched.

I think this is the larva of a water lover. Apparently crawled out to pupate. I put it in the wet sand for now. Tell me, please, how to remove an adult beetle? What is the substrate, humidity mode? Or even release it to the wild?

Sorry for the photo - I shot it in a hurry.

Deronectes abnormicollis Semenow, 1900
Male, length-5.2 mm.
Southern Kazakhstan, khr. Karatau. The species is quite common in those places in mountain watercourses.
The beetle is very worn. But since there are still no other photos of the view on the network, I decided not to delete this one smile.gif

Dear colleagues! In connection with the discovery of Hydrophilus piceus in the Kirov region (https://nurgush.org/news/2018/01/22/obnaruzhen-novyj-vid-vodolyubov/#comment-3397) and mention of the Leningrad region (literature?) please express your opinion on the possible expansion of this southern species in the middle zone of Russia. If the information is correct.

The legend is fresh... There will be a photo of the Kirov copy - there will be something to discuss.

For the Leningrad Region, sources are listed in the Red Data Book of the Leningrad Region (2002). However, one sentence (p.137) from this CC causes complete distrust of them: the mid - and posterior thorax from below with a powerful keel passing into a spike behind, which distinguishes this species from the close H. aterrimus Esch. When asked who checked the definitions for the new edition of the CC, I didn't get a response from the people involved.

I would like to see reliable references to H. piceus finds in Fennoscandia.

A weighty argument is the definition of the Kirov find by G. I. Yuferev.

14.02.2018 16:44, botanque

Yes, but still the facts weigh more heavily than the authorities. In this case, doubts are justified and only a photo can dispel them.

I join Vladislav's question. If forum users have found Hydrophilus piceus north of the Orenburg-Saratov-Voronezh region line, please post photos of the beetles (bottom view!) here. This will significantly clarify the issue of its distribution.

Stanislav, do I understand the difference between these two species correctly: Hydrophilus piceus has a keel on the last, distal segment, while H. aterrimus does not?

Probably someone kept floating beetles here. How long is their life span? I read somewhere that they live up to 4 years

Is it really possible to get a floating beetle from the larva? What is the best way to feed? I once tried a long time ago, but the larva died (gave tadpoles).
