Macroplea appendiculata (Panzer, 1794)

Thanks for the bug. I didn't know anything about these truly (sub-)aquatic, and only true, aquatic leaf-eaters.

And now I became interested and read an article about a neighboring species of this genus.

They, like all Donaciinae, belong to the group: Phytophilic water beetles

27.05.2012 15:59, amara

They, like all Donaciinae, belong to the group: Phytophilic water beetles

But I read it in the specified link:

"...Macroplea mutica (Fabricius, 1792), is only one of four completely aquatic species of leaf beetles, ...
Out of the water, they can hardly move on their thin and weak legs"

" ...Macroplea mutica (Fabricius, 1792), which is one of the
only four fully aquatic leaf beetles (genus Macroplea
Samouelle, 1819; Chrysomelidae: Donaciinae) (Wesen-
berg-Lund, 1943; Askevold, 1990), ...

Out of water, they are hardly
able to walk on their thin and weak legs."

This (plus the inability to fly) may explain their distribution features.

And here it is written that this species "lives completely under water at all stages of its development"

http://www.helcom.fi/environment2/biodiv/e...croplea_mutica/

True, this is written about Macroplea mutica (Fabricius, 1792) and can obviously be applied to the close species Macroplea pubipennis (Reuter 1875), and Macroplea appendiculata (Panzer, 1794) may differ in its biology.

Here, for example, it says that Macroplea japana, although it lives under water, if disturbed, it can also get out of the water and take off,

http://www.fcla.edu/FlaEnt/fe93p116.pdf

Хотя вот в этой работе KÖLSCH, G. & A. KRAUSE (2011): Oxygen consumption of the aquatic leaf beetles Macroplea mutica and Macroplea appendiculata is low and not influenced by salinity. Physiological Entomology 36: 111-119.

it is said that these species are similar in their bilogy, namely in a permanent life under water. With all the consequences. Poor development of wing muscles and low metabolic rate.

An extremely interesting genus.

The species occurs in various stagnant and flowing freshwater reservoirs, on Carex, Potamogeton, and Myriophyllum spicatum (Benkovsky, 2012). I caught a couple of specimens directly in the water, a passage was built between two reservoirs, and there was a small overflow (a meter and a half wide) from one to the other with a moderate current and small areas (dams), where these beetles floundered, probably they were washed away by the current there. Myriophyllum spicatum grew directly in the reservoir, quite close to the shore, although it depends on the depth.

I had a special interest in heloforuses. For the fun of the identification process itself. smile.gif
The drawings given in the last book are in Russian. The photos taken or prepared by Alexander Shatrovsky did not coincide in any way with what I saw on my few copies of the most common types. We were talking about large species of the type Helophorus (Helophorus) grandis. I guess I didn't understand something. I wrote to the author, but didn't get a response. But I never got to the definition of genitals.

Well, first of all, I didn't have one. Not so seriously yet, so I took up this case. smile.gif

And what kind of monograph, by the way, what year? Not this one by chance
" Angus, R. B. (1984):Towards a Revision of the palearctic Species of Helophorus F. - Ent.Review 63 (3): 89-119."?

Whether it is included in this list of references (at the bottom of the article). It is in this language that individual articles by species, but not yet by genus, began to appear (May 2012).

Probably all depends on the degree of salinity. Simple physics, specific gravity and muscle strength to overcome it by diving.
I swam in the salt lake myself. Or rather, I lay on the surface a little poruzhayas and I even moved a gust of wind.

10.07.2012 20:07, Aleksandr Ermakov

Here I do not mean physics, but physiology. It is difficult for freshwater animals to maintain homeostasis in salty waters. For this reason, many salt lakes are dead. Except for artemisia, arthropods-sutures.

I collect information on the range boundaries of D. latissimus in Russia. I am also interested in its environmental status in the constituent entities of the Russian Federation. I collect information to provide a clear picture of the global range and status of the species.
We are particularly interested in the borders of the eastern and southern directions. Thanks!
