Regarding the photo of Viktor Vasilyevich with the aborigines:
the first from the left and the third from the right natives each hold a boar.
The one in the middle is probably carrying some sort of marsupial, like a bandicoot.

Papua is really primitive and oddly enough still pristine. Out of all of Southeast Asia, it is probably the most preferred place to relax and explore.
Photo: The first photo - a little man who helped All of Us in difficult journeys around Papua (by the way, this year he found a very interesting place for entomological research), more: so I imagine the patron saint of the West Irian jungle, next: an unforgettable meeting of the dawn in Papua, and the last photo: if you find a place and like the patron saint of the forest, you can be fabulously gifted with its countless inhabitants.

"phoenixes", persistently climb on the screen to burn again.

The story is intended for an Entomological seminar.Don't transfer it.
It was the most special night I've ever seen. Boris Zhuravlev and I were preparing for fishing on the road, while Sergey Yevgenyevich, Vashchenko and Sokolov were standing three hundred meters away. It so happened that our guide - Usman (photo I showed above) for a long time led us around the vicinity of Jayapura, and offering fishing is not very good places, suddenly at the end of our entire expedition led us to this place. At the beginning of fishing, nothing much happened, and Boris, who always insisted that fishing should go to Peru, and not to Papua, finally got upset and went to sleep (in the awning next to the screen). For me, everything was still a novelty, and I continued to stand at the screen and wait for a miracle. The flight was bad, and the place was low-lying. But at some point, heavy artillery (rhinos, barbels, hawkmoth) began to pull up to the screen. I caught barbels and asked Boris what to do with them. Boris looked listlessly out of the tent and wondered about the size of the beetles. But I haven't come out yet. The size was small. Years increased. Boris finally stirred, and by midnight he was out of the tent. Our nets were chopping material together, and suddenly I heard what I thought was the sound of a heavy car coming down the road to meet us. But I couldn't see the headlights, and it took me a moment to realize that it wasn't a car moving, but a heavy tropical rainstorm. I only managed to shout to Boris that / It's a downpour/.Ten minutes after the rain started, the fishing pattern changed dramatically. Everything fell down, as if the god of Papua decided to fill us up with his wealth for the last time and, driving a powerful natural machine, knocked out more and more insects from the forest. First came some strange ants (in the photo they are a brown mess lying on the asphalt). It would be correct to say that an ant blizzard has begun. It was impossible to hide anywhere, they were everywhere : in the tent, in the backpack, in containers, in envelopes, in the pockets of jackets and pants. Everywhere. But that's not all. The God of the forest decided to test Our strength and gave these ants bee stings. We were all wet and savagely eaten by these ants. It was impossible to stand it (the worst thing was when these reptiles got into the eyes and mouth), but we were able to pass this test, and after an hour the ant horde began to give up and settled on the screen. Seeing Our resilience, the God of Papua generously filled our containers with a variety of insects. It was time to throw away everything we'd caught in the previous nights. This is how one night can make an entomologist happy and memories vivid. The next night we decided to go back. The fallen ants had already begun to deteriorate during the day, and they smelled like something with a long-dead dog lying on the side of the road. Fishing on the second day was slightly worse. I could see what was missing on that magical night.
Photo: Morning of a magical day in Papua, next: one of the surviving beauties, next: a tree giant of the Southeast, next: a small rhinoceros, next: a giant that, by the will of the lord of the forest, was thrown to the screen that night.

What a beautiful mustache. And how many of them are there?

27.03.2011 15:23, Romyald

I can't say for sure, it's been two years since then, but Boris Zhuravlev said that in addition to this barbel, Sokolov and Vashchenko caught a couple more of the same. Moustache was very strong and vicious, a real native. In the photo, it is missing its left front paw and part of its whisker. This specimen was caught completely intact, and stabbed with a large dose of ammonia, but apparently Boris did not calculate the ratio of venom and mass of the beetle. After a while, he came to life. And apparently in agony bit off his paw and whisker.
Boris was sorting out the captured material in my presence at the hotel, and when he came to the beetles, he was very surprised that this barbel was still alive. He inadvertently took it with his hand, for which he paid the price, the evil native, twisting around, grabbed his finger. I'll never forget the expression on the face of this expert insect catcher. He must have felt the power of the beetle's jaws in every cell of his body. Later, when the beetle was removed from his finger, he said quietly,"If I hadn't stabbed him when I caught him, I would have had to sew up the finger for sure." Then I decided to take a picture of the beetle, because not so often you can see such a powerful insect, with such huge vital forces. In the photo, an aboriginal after being bitten.

Many people, in fact, can't attend the Seminar on Wednesdays and work until late. But, unfortunately, this time is allocated by the Institute...
We would like the Seminar itself to become an occasion for meetings where you can exchange not only news, but also material, communicate, etc.
By the way, after graduation, it becomes a good tradition to drink a beer in a nearby cafe...
Also, we want "new People" to come with their reports, stories about their entomological journeys, even if it is "The Jungle of our yard"...
Sincerely, initiative group

There is nothing to be surprised about, this is generally a typical phenomenon for large cities. Even football matches in Moscow are attended by an average of 8-12 thousand people. What can we say about entomology?.. wink.gif

Yes, unfortunately, many people cannot attend our meetings, but believe me, our premises are almost never empty. Wednesday turned out to be the most optimal day for maximizing the reach of the "thirsty" audience in terms of knowledge.
The autumn session of the Workshop is scheduled to start in mid-September. It would be very important to receive your recommendations and suggestions. jump.gif
