Korotko-Ryazan region, Kasimov. There is still a lot of snow, it only got warmer on Sunday. Thawed, in fact, only the hills and roads. Fly single and battered urticae, polychloros/xantomelas (I can hardly distinguish them in the box), rhamni and fresh spring moth Archiearis parthenias. I've only caught a couple of the last ones, they're pretty, but I haven't even straightened them out yet. Interestingly, from the basement of the house, all V. io disappeared somewhere, but they were not seen in flight. We are waiting for a real spring.

In the Caucasus mountains (at least in the west) it does exist, but of course it is a continental, mostly Siberian species.

wise_snake - I am amazed at how much the coleopterofauna of your biotope (in which you shot) differs from our CMS-eshnaya!... - although we also have 5 geobotanical zones from Kislovodsk to Geogievsk (100 km): - semi-desert, steppe, forest-steppe, forest and alpine meadows.

All natural, when he approached the horse, it spat out the victim's head. I would like to watch the hunting of horses, and then I usually get to the meal, most often ants are used for food, sometimes hunter spiders, and here is a beetle.

Bag HOLDER-SUPER mol.gif

18.04.2009 21:43, barry

Today is the floor of Volgograd. Swallowtails flew very well, there were 3-4 butterflies in the field of view, a lot of mother-of-pearl, it's a pity they didn't let them get close. Some beetles have been encountered.

Super! The bag lady was caught after all... smile.gif
By the way, the weevil is spotted (which is after the baggy) and I came across it today. I wonder what kind of beast...

photographing insects with a whale lens is simply impossible!!! - Season on the side! - And I have absolutely no funds for a macro lens ) Find at least,, Helios,,, disassemble and fix the front lens, stick it on a suitable UV filter. The filter itself can be removed,it is generally not needed.

So I got some free time and decided to post a belated report after all.
So, 5.04.2009, natural monument "Kamennaya Balka". This is about 30 km from Rostov to the east. The temperature is 10-12 degrees, strong wind, sunny.
They collected animals mainly under rocks and other shelters

Landscapes:

picture: IMG_1114.jpg

Only two species have been found among the kivsiaks: Megaphyllum rossicum and Sarmatoiulus kessleri, which is called gray kivsiak in Russian. Last one in the photos:
picture: IMG_0990.jpg
IMG_1055.jpg

There were 4 types of woodlice. One of them is Trachelipus rathkii:
IMG_1070.jpg

Under one of the rocks sat Gnaptor spinimanus
picture: IMG_1013.jpg

In another place, they found some dolonos
picture: IMG_1024.jpg

There were a lot of kravchik burrows on the slopes, but the beetles themselves were rare. One of them was dragging a blade of grass into a hole:
picture: IMG_1076.jpg

In the thicket of bushes we came across a tangle of water snakes:
picture: IMG_1031.jpg
picture: IMG_1037.jpg

Then we found a hollow in which there was practically no wind and engaged in bourgeois cooking-mulled wine on a burner:
picture: IMG_1041.jpg

In the same place, a mottled moth flew to us for tea
IMG_1062.jpg

And finally a little weed:
picture: IMG_1003.jpg
picture: IMG_1094.jpg

There were also Bibirstein tulips blooming there, but the pictures didn't work out because the flowers were too swaying in the wind.
The most unpleasant thing is that the beam is badly burned. We have something in the region that is getting worse and worse every year with the firing squads... weep.gif

Today in the steppe near Volgograd. Finally, I managed to catch a yellow-bellied snake, about a year ago I met this snake for the first time, but I couldn't get acquainted in any way, I got a small specimen - a little more than a meter (friends caught about 2 meters).

Based on the photo, it is unlikely that you will be able to use these signs. I will mention the main feature - in Otitidae, the costal vein is intact, and in variegated wings with two breaks. But, of course, I didn't use this feature in this case - you can't see it in the photo anyway.
I just have a certain number of representatives of these families in my collection and sometimes you can recognize them "in person". When you identify flies for almost a quarter of a century, you get some experience.

Thank you, I'll know. I understand that you have a lot of experience.
It's just that I've never identified diptera myself, and out of ignorance, I've listed flies of this appearance as mottled wings. And in the collection there are a certain number of specimens of "variegated" flies. Tomorrow I will look at their costal veins smile.gif

Well, that's fine. At first, I also had them in mottled wings.
Well, if you want to seriously understand the collected material, then you need a "green" determinant. There, the family definition table is not bad.
