Grigory, a similar question. Please explain how these families differ. smile.gif

Well, that's fine. At first, I also had them in mottled wings.
Well, if you want to seriously understand the collected material, then you need a "green" determinant. There, the family definition table is not bad.

Thank you for your advice, but I just don't have time to deal with the definition of a dipter. I hope there is some student who will take care of some group of flies and at least put the collection in order a little.

I understand perfectly. We don't have enough time chronically, there is so much undisclosed material...

You have an untilled field for sirfids in your area, for example...

If you are willing to help, I can try to find a student who is interested in entomology and " set " him on some group of flies. I myself am a complete layman in the "fly topic", I will not be able to train a student enough.

As far as I can imagine, we have an untilled field for many groups of flies (and probably diptera in general). Because flies in the Rostov region have not been dealt with for a very long time. There is a good dolichopodid school in Voronezh, but they don't come to us, even though they are neighbors.

From May 1 to May 7, we went to Taman (Krasnodar Territory, Taman Peninsula). We lived right in the village, which did not interfere with fishing at all: taxi prices are more than affordable, you can reach a number of points just on foot. The purpose of the trip was to visit two representatives of the Dorcadion genus-Dorcadion ciscaucasicum Jak. and Dorcadion panticapaeum Plav., as well as Brachycerus sinuatus Olivier., plus a few rare ground beetles from the genus Harpalus and Pecilus, plus-all kinds of spring steppe fauna. The place of fishing perfectly suited this - in Taman you can catch representatives of the Crimean, Caucasian and Southern steppe fauna. Trees in these places are almost rare, most of Taman is occupied by steppes. The most interesting and abundant flora of the Black Sea coast seemed to us. The flora of the Sea of Azov is less diverse and interesting. They were caught both by manual collection and with the help of traps. Just in the first few days, we caught several Carabus (Pachystus) hungaricus with our hands. Along the way, 3-4 species of Brachinus, several species of steppe Pecilus and Harpalus, Chlaenius, and various small things were collected. Representatives of the genus Dinodes (both species) were caught much less frequently. Scarites (Scarites) terricola Bonelli and S. Laevigatus F. were also found near the sea. (it was much rarer.) Calomera littoralis (Fabricius, 1787) also ran there. There were no other horses yet - it was too early and cold (the weather did not spoil us with warmth, plus the strongest wind was blowing almost constantly). Poecilus lyroderus (Chaudoir, 1846) was a pleasant and expected discovery. Alas, only one male was caught (by manual collection). But Brachycerus-and could not be found. As for the barbel, we managed to capture both the intended species from the genus Dorcadion, as well as Dorcadion carinatum (Pallas, 1771) and Dorcadion (Cribridorcadion) cinerarium Fabricius (these animals were the most numerous). I note that catching Dorkash in Taman is not a gift at all: due to the abundance of cracks in the soil, they have a lot of shelters and are poorly collected with their hands. There are also several types of Fetecia and Agapanthia. Pentodons were periodically caught from the plates, and Amphicoma (Pygopleurus) vulpes (Fabricius, 1781), as well as lunar copra and ontophagus were very rarely caught. Unfortunately, we didn't find any Spanish copra and scarabs. As usual, a couple of days were not enough to study the point:-)

On the night of May 09-10, I was fishing in the village of Chebakovo, Tutaevsky district, YAO. As the sun went down, it turned sharply colder. Usually, Mikra is the first to arrive, but this time she wasn't either. By some miracle, three female peacocks arrived at DRV-250, one after another, with an interval of 5-7 minutes, and again silence, there are no scoops, no moths, nothing. On the chipped DRL-250 in 30 meters,May beetles flew very well, and not a single butterfly at all. If it weren't for the pavonias, the night might be considered a failure, but it's a strange night, but with trophies.
On May 11, I went to the outskirts of Yaroslavl, the so-called Lower Settlement, rubi and levana clouds. For a swing of the net, several butterflies are caught at once. I came off with my soul, ran after Tai. Not so much, but they fly. A friend we're hunting with found two female Endromis, which were slowly passing away, but still moving. It's a pity, it's going to rain next weekend, and the day trips will be closed.

Volgograd region, on May 8, I went to the floodplain of the Medveditsa River in the Mikhailovsky district, the main goal was lucina, mnemosyne, polyxena and Nikolsky's viper, I found everything except mnemosyne. On the sandy beaches of the herd of C. sahlbergi, under the bark I found Carabus convexus, for the first time in these places I met several Dorcadion cinerarium, in the poop clouds of copra of all sorts of small caloaters and aphodia. Snappers with polyxena are simply "like dirt", fly swallowtails and podaliriyas, but at an unattainable height of 4-5 meters.
Every trip I try to collect beetles, but I always feel sorry for them and release all the loot shuffle.gif

Dear wise snake,
The report is just a miracle!
What a pity you had no luck with mnemosyne!
How so, you are such a connoisseur of the Volgograd nature!
For mnemosyne, May 8-it takes off so early in your country only in very warm years, and spring was still very cold. Three or four days from now!

13.05.2009 14:06, Stas Shinkarenko

Gash, unfortunately, I only had one day, so I was hoping that mnemosyne would suddenly fly (in 2008, on May 9, it already flew). And spring this year is really 10 days behind last year frown.gif
But nothing, mnemosyne can be found in Volgograd, but lucina and Nikolsky's viper are marked only in the Don basin.

Mikhaylovka, Volgograd region, from May 9 to May 11, he was engaged in field work, but left several times a day to make a detour through the surrounding forest belts and an abandoned dacha village. If I'm not mistaken, the pipefish Rhynchites giganteus has not been caught in our region before.

Report on a trip with sdi for polyxene.
Briefly, because all the photos are from Sergey, and they are not attached to me.
We left on Saturday at 21 pm for the reason that I couldn't earlier - I was celebrating the anniversary of a family friend (alas, we couldn't refuse). Two half-dead carcasses from alcohol were loaded into Sergey's car. I also managed to figure out that we will arrive a little late for night fishing and therefore we need to grab a generator that can solve this problem by stopping at the myrmidon hatchery. smile.gifThen, once again, it turned out that the Chinese equipment (generator) does not tolerate drunk hands and refuses to work. However, by this time we have already managed to pull the ropes for the screen... And we drove on. Nothing favored the success of the undertaking, especially the weather. On Sunday in the Ryazan region promised no more than 11 heat. On the way, a tire was also hit. Truly, Russia has two problems: the roads and those who drive on them at night smile.gif
The next number of the program was night fishing already at my dacha. We started it, I don't remember exactly, after one o'clock in the morning... It was cold (I didn't care shuffle.gif), and Sergey was quietly swearing at the fence that was too high, in his opinion. It flew, to put it mildly, poorly. I.e. almost nothing. Talking and drinking beer, we sat down to the first birds that woke up with the dawn at 4: 20.
We got some sleep... Then they went looking for Polixena. A cold north wind was blowing, and the sky was completely covered with fast clouds. There were no signs of the sun, nor were there any signs of its appearance in the future. But fools are lucky, 5 minutes after disembarking at the station and exactly for another 5 minutes, a sunny window opened in the clouds. I didn't even get a net, but Sergey immediately caught three pieces of the coveted polyxena, which also rejoiced at the sun (on its own head). We spent more time in the vicinity, and I found that either fishermen or local residents had once again burned out most of the station in the spring, which, by the way, also had Apollons on it weep.gif
Along the way, they picked up a half-frozen swallowtail and a thick-headed mallow. On the bushes and grass of sorrow sat some black flies in abundance and dragonflies. And the May beetles were devouring the last of the leaves on the surrounding oaks. Beetles this year - a wild number. A few years ago, I already saw completely devoured oaks, but this year these creatures also ate aspen, and birches in general were completely gnawed on one (downwind) side. And all sorts of willows are hung with clusters of beetles.
There was still no sign of the sun, so we headed for the Apollo station in the woods. Then another miracle happened and in 5 minutes we found the tracks of Apollo, which I could not find all the last years. The tracks differed in size just dramatically - from 8 mm to 4 cm. But at the same time, they cheerfully ate the barely broken sprouts of purge. We caught 6 pieces, 4 I planted on the growing in the yard ochitok, a couple of Sergey took with him. Then it turned out that the caterpillars willingly devour both the large stonecrop and S. perpurea (it blooms red), although only the first one grows on the station. I'll look at the results on my next trip.
At the beginning of the fourth, the sky was suddenly almost clear, they picked up one B. dia and one argiades right on my site (I'm confused in the subfamilies for memory).
And finally we were carried to another polyxene station right in the village. Unfortunately, only one butterfly was found with difficulty. Either it was late afternoon, or something else.
Well, actually, that's all. The road home was not remembered by anything, except for the absence of the traditional traffic jam at the entrance to Moscow. I hope Sergey will add some additional photos and post them if they work out.
Thank you to Sergey for his patience. I hope he wasn't bored wink.gif

On May 16, I went to my "hunting spots" in the area of Larino village of YAO, having four female E. pavonia with me. But low cloud cover and temperatures no higher than + 7C told me to fuck off. Even the ubiquitous rubi wasn't in sight. Accidentally startled moose on the edge of the swamp, that's all the impressions. The next day, the temperature rose to +15C. Probably in these limits there is a threshold of summer of peacocks. Males of course flew, only 9 pieces came, but somehow sluggishly, there was no last year's shaft. But I tested the method that Murzin read in the article, when pavonia males are attracted not only by the female herself, but also by the fabric on which this female previously sat. I threw a similar cloth at a distance from the cage, and to my delight, after a couple of minutes, two males swooped down on the cloth. However, after about 30 minutes, even moved to the cage, the cloth did not attract anyone, probably quickly weathered. Such a hunt turned out.

North of the Ryazan region. At the same latitude as Moscow, they are also found further north.

Back to the Apollo tracks. Sergey-sdi in the process of discussing the question of why I couldn't find these caterpillars in previous years, expressed an interesting idea that maybe the caterpillars feed in cloudy weather. Because I always unsuccessfully searched for them only in the bright sun, focusing on numerous literary sources. This time-cold (about +12 and overcast). What are the opinions of people who have seen Apollo caterpillars in nature?
By the way, the caterpillars are not shy at all, they sit openly, crawl on the ground around the stems of the cleaning agent. As far as I have observed, they feed often and little by little, going down to the ground after eating. Very beautiful - velvety black with bright orange spots on the sides and small blue dots on the back. The smallest caterpillars are almost entirely black. I wonder what the difference in age is with such a significant difference in size (5 times)?

Thank you, I drew a flower smile.giffor you, please send me the photos in their original form, otherwise I might not get to the caterpillars again in the near future.
The tick was half-dead and crawled AWAY FROM us, not towards us. Maybe he was a vegetarian at all. By the way, this is the first tick I've seen in those parts in 10 years.
The river looks almost mountainous There are not smile.gifenough beetles in the frame weep.gif
And this is what the lumbago (dream-grass) looked like on the first of May.

The "half-dead" tick was the largest I had ever seen. He crawled away from us, probably having already eaten smile.gif. Yes, there are not enough beetles.
