After searching for butterflies for another hour and a half, we drove home after dark.

I went fishing at the weekend for the light. the moth Operophtera brumata/fagata flew (how do they differ exactly?), first 3 males of P. populi and 2 males of ptilophora and a couple of scoops flew, but then the moon came out from behind the clouds and nothing began to fly at all and I went into the house. When I came out after half an hour, I saw that the moon was not visible again, and the females of P. populi and ptilophora flew to me, after some time another female ptilophora, I left them to receive eggs (now they are laying gradually).

At my father's dacha this weekend near Sergiev Pasad, male poplar cocoonworms are in a frenzied number. There was nothing else remarkable. Interestingly, their color varied from black to light brown.

Can I take photos of a variety of colors? in my opinion, they are not very different from each other...

I just caught a male ptilophora in the entrance of Lytkarino... in my opinion, in a couple of years they will be in bulk in the Ministry of Defense...

Hurray! In Mendeleevo (not far from Zelenograd) I managed to catch two main characters of the October night: Ptilophora plumigera and Poecilocampa populi. Interestingly, no live scoops were seen. There were also moth Operophtera and some larger ones: either they, too, or Epirrita. Good results were obtained by examining only four ceiling lights in the hostel: Habrosyne pyritoides, Pleuroptya ruralis, Xanthorhoe quadrifasciata (or biriviata), Pheosia gnoma, Cosmia pyralina and several unknown ones were found, which I will now post in the definition. By the way, no one knows how to write in the caption to the photo that the object is already inanimate?

Yesterday I caught only one ptilophora in the light, the moon was shining and nothing was flying at all... Although in the evening some butterflies flew by, but I don't know which ones, they didn't come to the light.

Has anyone caught Agriopis bajaria in MO and where? It's supposed to be in MO, but I've never seen it.

Has anyone caught Agriopis bajaria in MO and where? It's supposed to be in MO, but I've never seen it.

Why should it? This is a more southern species, not known from the more southern Kaluga, Tula, and Ryazan regions.

Poplar cocoonworms have dried up, here is the promised photo showing the difference in color. The one on the far right is much brighter than the one on the far left (in reality, the difference is even more noticeable, the telephoto camera doesn't shoot very well) smile.gif

I bring to your attention a slightly belated photo report about fishing for light in the last days of August of this year (28th) in the area of der. Zibrovo near the south-eastern border of the Prioksko-Terrasny Nature Reserve.
Equipment: a screen with a General Electric DRV lamp of 250 watts (I want to draw your attention to the fact that lamps of this particular brand, based on the experience of using them in the forest zone and in the tropics, have the most successful spectrum for attracting insects, compared to Philips and Osram), a light trap assigned 150 m beyond the forest zone from the screen, a Honda 1000 generator.
Climatic conditions: calm cloudy weather, + 10-12 C at night.
Among the most significant finds, I will mention the capture of a male praying mantis Mantis religiosa, which was not previously recorded on the territory of the PTZ. I also have no reliable information about mantis finds in the Moscow region.
According to I. Osipov (Deputy Director of PTZ for science), he made an attempt to acclimatize a large Canadian praying mantis (unfortunately, I don't remember the name) in the north of the reserve, but it was not crowned with success, and the meaning of it in my opinion is rather doubtful.
Apparently, due to the warm winters of recent years, a population of Mantis religiosa exists in Zibrovo. Unfortunately, the capture was isolated and only the second year can shed light on the problem of the spread of the praying mantis to the north, again, with a mild winter, as I think.
In this regard, please send a message to anyone who is lucky enough to catch this species in the Moscow region.

To my mind, this smacks of sabotage: the reserve is designed to preserve the local flora and fauna-and here an outsider is being instilled! Deputy.science directors! And that's how they do it...

I came back from my dacha. There is some fauna. Mostly micro. I'll sort out the photos and submit a report. But if such a temperature at night was in March, the catch would not be comparable large...

My report, like the previous one, is not burdened with a specific catch. Almost everything that is on styrofoam, then flew. The exception is brown finger-flies, of which there were quite a few. By the way, do fingerflies overwinter or not? I don't remember them this spring. Mosquitoes and various midges - much more than in the spring.
Even flies flew to the lamp. Interestingly, on the first night there was not a single butterfly, all on the second, although the temperature regime of both day and night was approximately the same. The only transversal scoop is rather an exception. It is clear that wintering scoops are not going to fly now (maybe they need to freeze, maybe the longitude of the day is not satisfied). There were also no butterflies on the bait, only midges and mosquitoes, and it seemed that they were drinking bait with their trunks, but they didn't try to bite me (drink blood).

Not exactly a fishing report, but... In general, I had a cocoon of a small peacock eye in the bank, the caterpillar of which I found back in June. 10 days ago I moved the jar from the outdoor (cold) shed to the house, and yesterday the butterfly was already hatched. In the photo, the butterfly is dotted, because I first sprayed it with water, and then I saw that the butterfly was hatched.

A very good photo in connection with the question about the seasonal behavior of Nymphalis discussed in another topic. From the photo, it is clear that the butterfly could not, having appeared at the latest in mid-July (or, let's say, even with an incredible delay - in August), fly until the cold weather and survive with such a wing contour; it is obvious that the butterfly climbed into the shelter in the summer.

Report on the last week from 05.04 to 13.04
5.04, returning from the Ryazan province in Ukhtomka (outskirts of Moscow)caught the first scoop-Conistra vascinii.
05042009301.jpg
7.04 – the weather leaves much to be desired, during the day up to plus 6, at night up to minus 6, but right after sunset, something already appears-Eupsilia transversa and some micro.
05042009302.jpg
On Saturday 11.04 I went to the dacha near O-Zuyevo, it was sunny weather, the maximum temperature in the afternoon is plus 9 degrees. I saw the lemongrass, the springwort Archiearis parthenias flew in full swing.
DSC01935_1.JPG
picture: DSC01933_1.JPG
picture: DSC01944_1.JPG
Immediately after sunset, the air temperature dropped to minus 2-3 degrees, but this did not prevent Brachionycha nubeculosa and a couple of micros from flying in. At midnight, a thin-winged moth spun around under the lamp, but flew up. On Sunday, it warmed up to plus 13, in the afternoon, in addition to lemongrass, hives and peacock eyes flew.
On Sunday, already in Ukhtomka, as it got dark, it was plus six and there were some new butterflies-scoops this year: Orthosia incerta, Conistra vaccinii, Eupsilia transversa and the moth Phigalia pilosaria. The following night, the scooper Achlya flavicornis.

There is an assumption that if you go to my dacha on Wednesday evening, then with a high degree of probability you will be able to catch fluffy cocoonworms. On Wednesday-because then they promise a cold snap. I can't go by myself - it's my job.

In my opinion, in Moscow you can already start catching the light. Yesterday, on a slightly open window and a table lamp-4 or 5 macrolepidopters passed by, 1 eupsillia flew in.

The purpose of the trip was Nymphalis vaualbum Shiff, which in the previous two years at this time had already flown. But I didn't meet her. But there were many Aglais urticae L and Gonepteryx rhamni L males, and two Polygonia c-album L.
Archiearis parthenias L. flew everywhere.
