A few news items from my Megastep (TM) related to polists. Hornets began to brutalize in full force for the last three days ravaged two nests, here one ants finish up:

_____673.jpg

I saw one today prowling for prey just a few meters away from another nest. but this time I missed it - I didn't notice it. nevertheless. However, it is felt that the amount of work on mapping nests due to the efforts of these predators will soon decrease many times. It's just as well - it takes a lot of time and effort, the nests are already huge, there are 2-3 dozen wasps on each one, each one has a sting and is ready to use it at the slightest flaw on my part.

A very unexpected surprise - a tiny gallicus nest with one small founder, built on a live flowering aster shoot, so very recently:

picture: _____601.jpg
_____581.jpg

Most likely, this is one of the surviving wasps from the nest destroyed by the hornets first, at the very beginning of the month. This is the first time in my practice that after the hornet attack, the polists managed to do at least something better. The new nest is located five meters from the ravaged one. Apparently, the rest of the family couldn't find him, and neither could the hornet. I don't think it was in the first place - thanks to its small size, I hardly noticed it myself. Judging by the size of the uterus, it seems that this is a former worker, from the first. It will be interesting to see who gets out of the brood, if, of course, it comes out at all. In theory, there should be only males.

And another unusual case - a nest of nymphs, half bitten off from above:

_____672.jpg

Bitten off about a week ago, the predator did not return again. Judging by the nature of the damage, we can assume a small mammal. The strange thing is that the nest is built 80 cm above the ground on a thin stalk of asparagus. normally, mammals don't go into such places.

The Latibulus are more brutal than ever that year:

_____521.jpg
_____534.jpg

Meanwhile, in the city, normal males and reproductive females have already gone to the dominuls.

Taki pan brought new grass from his recent epic expedition around the Mykolaiv region. Or mushrooms?

Wasps may be suffering, but researchers of latibuls, whose biology is still almost undescribed, are happy. But in fact, latibuls almost never lead to the death of the polist family, hornets are much more terrible "bloodsuckers". Obviously, this is why there are no gallicuses at all in the Svidomo Zapadensk regions. For there are hornets, judging by the posts of panov's namesake, a strong bust.

Ezox, where's the science?? Where is the analysis of the phenomenon in the difference in nest sizes? In general, everything is clear.. weep.gif

05.08.2016 2:05, ИНО

To analyze the phenomenon, you must first see it, and in different aspects (count the number of cells, measure the width of the cells, because the size of the nest depends on both of these factors, know the timing of laying nests, the sum of effective temperatures from the moment of laying to the current one in both years, parasitoid infestation, etc.). In place of this, I have only the more empty blah-blah from Pan Russophobe, according to which only one type of analysis can be carried out - psycho -. The phenomenon there is, of course, notable, worthy of a dissertation, but not in the field of entomology.

About two weeks ago I accidentally found a hornet's nest in the ground. It was a nice nest, and the wasps came and went literally every second.
Last Sunday I got there with a normal camera, I look - what is it ? The OS is not visible. At first I thought it was ruined. But no, they still fly, but somehow very, very rarely. Then I see this: the wasp climbs out of the nest, and instead of flying where it should, it sits on a blade of grass and bends (see photo). Sausage it in general. Maybe this is the same disease that Hierophis wrote about here last year? And then I see a bunch of dead wasps lying around the nest. I also think they pull the larvae out of the nest (see also in the photo, what is this larva in her teeth?).

But then I found a hornet's nest nearby, in a hollow willow tree. That's power, I tell you! But there are no photos unfortunately, and here's why. I stand a meter away from the hollow tree, maybe even further. Well, I don't move at all. And it flies and flies around me. And although they write that they are not aggressive, they still somehow brr... It is much more pleasant to take pictures of them in the forest on the leaking juice:

People, I understand that you are very fond of wasps, but I ran into this problem: large wasps Vespula or Dolichovespula (unfortunately not photographed) formed a large (about 15 cm in diameter) nest on the balcony and prevented people from living. after the physical destruction of the nest and a large number of wasps, a week later everything was rebuilt again in the same place. question: how to ward off wasps (chemical treatment, herbal decoctions, dancing with a tambourine)?

Very interesting observation! This is very similar to what we had in 2012! In that season, the wasps thrived, there were a lot of nests, including one on my balcony, but by August a strange thing began-the population in the nests began to decline and even to the point that the wasps completely stopped foraging! On the balcony below the nest, there were many writhing, crawling erratically and dead wasps. This is similar to some viral diseases of bees, namely viral paralysis of bees.
In that season, I lit a lot of nests, and as a result, by the end of August, I couldn't find them! The entrances were filled in, and during excavations, such a picture was found - rotting honeycombs and almost no wasps. Wasp larvae were also carried out - wasps throw out larvae when there is a non-response. between the number of wasps or feed intake and the number of larvae.

In general, KM2200, you observe the situation in general, how many oss are encountered, whether the number is falling. We still have tfu tfu everything seems fine, but who knows.. Such a sore can devastate almost completely the aspen population, we sowed it on the sl. season except poooolistov, vespula and other normal wasps were not at all =0

Yes, Esox is not a reader.. From the text, it is clear and understandable that I still found the place where the nests were, because what entrances did I see filled up then and what honeycombs did I take out? weep.gif And of course, the entrance to the nest must be marked additionally with a stone.

And the os needs to be photographed at least like this, and then even these photos are Ezoksovy well, in general, like interesting events and darkness and turbidity and aberration everywhere )))

By the way. it would have been possible to remove the nozzle, then it would have been much easier to "catch" Tachysfex, but he was so fast that I simply would not have had time to do it. The sword of Damocles still fell, and the two large gallicus nests shown on the previous page were destroyed by a hornet.

_______159.jpg
_______169.jpg

Interestingly, there are two other nests. where the hornets had previously eaten most of the brood, for some reason they left it alone at the last moment, and there polista larvae are grown again, although quite a bit compared to what was before. It's very strange that the hornets didn't finish what they started. I've never seen anything like this before. Perhaps there was a hornet-eater on the property, most likely one of the birds, who killed those two foragers before the devastation was complete. But this is only a tentative guess. In general, there are very few hornet foragers flying there compared to previous years.

11.08.2016 23:08, KM2200

Today I was again near the nest I wrote about last time. Everything, there are no oss at all, just a few dead ones lying around. I dug it up. The nest itself was located at a shallow depth, at a distance of approximately 70 cm from the entrance, in cavities with a diameter of approx. 20 cm. The paper shell is torn into small pieces, so it looks like someone has already been there before me. Honeycombs in 6 tiers, but completely empty. I don't know what that means.
An ant (I suspect Solenopsis fugax) was also found during the excavations, but I think this has nothing to do with wasps.

What kind of tin, did they throw away all the maggots? In fact, the nest is in full bloom, and quite large, to build such a nest, you need everything to be good for the wasps at least until mid-July.
The paper layer usually crumbles very easily in such underground nests, it could also crumble when the nest is removed. This is if the nest is in the cavity of some wide cabinet, or other "hive", then there is a stronger shell usually.
The queen ant is unlikely, of course, and the ants may have grown the larvae, but the ants themselves cannot do anything with a healthy nest like this.
Of course, it would not be bad if you knew where else there are nests and compared the situation there. Well, + monitoring the dynamics of the number of vespulae in general, in markets, in garbage cans, and just like that-now there are a lot of them, they fly everywhere.

I'm doing fine so far smile.gif

And nafiga already 11.5 minutes of the same thing? And what do the workers do when they actively inflate their wings? but not soaring ones. Do they ventilate the entrance? I've never seen one like it, probably because I've never seen Germanic nests in thin-walled boxes in the sun. The overheating there must be terrible.

Meanwhile, today the hornets finished the last of the primary gallicus nests I observed and another secondary one. There were only two small secondary nests left, and those. probably, without the original founders, that is, females will not be produced, even if they manage to escape from ruin. However, apparently a few reproductive females have already managed to fly out before the ruin. But this is a pathetic percentage of the norm for well-off families.

But the nymphs are doing much better, 5 nests have been preserved, one of them is just huge, 99X78 mm, despite the fact that the edges of the honeycomb also bend up. And all because nymphs choose more secluded places for nesting, their nests are now very difficult to see, if I hadn't noticed since the spring, I wouldn't have found it even if I walked in one step. And the nests of gallicus can be seen for 50 meters. The only nest of nymphs destroyed on that site by a hornet this year was laid abnormally high on the top of asparagus and clearly visible, for which it paid the price. He was also chewed by mice beforehand. But still, there are a few males and females still managed to breed. In general, the nymphs are powerful! And gallikus, with all their very interesting adaptations to life in the steppe under the scorching sun, can not oppose anything to the pressure of hornets nesting in the forest next door, they would like to live somewhere in a completely treeless area, but there should be streams, because they consume a lot of water (including for cooling). And it is desirable to have warmer winters, because the analysis of corpses of unsuccessfully wintered wasps showed that almost all of them are gallicuses, although initially there were fewer gallicuses in wintering grounds than nymphs.

A bad case.. He is told that the hive is in the shade and the shooting was carried out in the evening, he reads a screenshot with illumination..
Ezox, do you understand what dynamic range is? Or haven't you read about it yet? Just in case, I repeat, the camera has a matrix with increased sensitivity wall.gif

12.08.2016 15:01, ИНО

6 o'clock - it's not even evening yet, the sun is hot, which is what we see in the video. I'm out in the field at 6 o'clock right now, so I know exactly what I'm talking about. The dynamic range, of course, this camera is very dumb (as well as sharpness, by the way, again probably some cheap smartphone), but it's still hard not to see that the right side of the box is illuminated many times brighter than the left, and this does not happen when illuminated exclusively in diffused light.

12.08.2016 15:22, Hierophis

All right, Esox, you're an expert, tell me, which side of the world does the "sunlit" side of the "box"face?

12.08.2016 15:48, ИНО

So I don't know the angle of incidence of the rays on the surface. But considering that they generally fall on it, it should be half of the azimuthal circle somewhere from 0 to 180 degrees (for a little more clarification, it would not be necessary to know the azimuth of the sun in Nikolaev at 6 pm that day, but I'm too lazy to look for this information) . However, there is still a small chance that the box is not affected by direct sunlight, but reflected, for example, from the metal roof of a neighboring building or its window. But not scattered. Which doesn't change the essence of the nest roasting process.

12.08.2016 16:05, Hierophis

Scco weep.gif
Azimuth circle" weep.gif

Lit, according to the version of vyalikago megaixpert Ezox, by the sun, the side of the box faces exactly to the east, and the sun acc. in the west ... The box stands on the balcony so that its extreme sides are parallel to the ends of the balcony, and moreover, it stands in the western corner near the western wall, and moreover.. the open part of the balcony there is covered with boards..
Croce, this box is generally in a deep shadow..
Expert, damn wall.gifThis Chudo will probably be something buhtet, even if you poke his nose in this box (although, if it is, then not for long, Germanics will tell him where there is something reflected from what lol.gif)

12.08.2016 16:34, ИНО

Isn't it a circle? No, well, Pan after poppies can have a square horizon, then this is the case... But I noticed that I made an ambiguity in my improvised description, because an arc of 0-180 degrees can be drawn both through 90 and through 270, I had in mind the second option. I'm not supposed to know what Pan's house is parallel to in the deep shadow, boarded up, and from which direction he sees the west. And I'm supposed to know that such a bright and contrasting illumination from scattered sunlight can not be. Or rather, of course, it can, but only on real high-sensitivity cameras that take pictures of the starry sky or animals in the light of the moon, and not on the squalor that pan claims to be such, and if such a camera decided to turn on during the day, even on Pan's shady balcony, everything would be crossed, and not just one line. And there is clearly something specifically so hot (if not the sun, then, therefore, the dazzling radiance of a bright communist European future). And the wasps are trying to escape from this something by using enhanced ventilation, which, however, is extremely ineffective in this case, because most of the air flow does not get into the hole. Still, with a normal Germanic entrance corridor instead of a hole where the fan wasps could have been placed, the effect would probably have been better.

But what I don't understand is how Pan got the germanics in the box on the balcony, if not so long ago he reported that he put a nest of vulgaris in it. Or have the more cold-loving vulgaris already taken pity on such an inferno?

I looked through a piece of that boring sleeping pill kin again. Still, yes, the noise level there is zero, all noise is mercilessly crushed in infancy, only wide watercolor strokes constantly play on objects. Chroma is also specific: the white balance changes every few seconds. But the main thing is that there is no sharpness from the word "in general". In general, a complete byaka. Although, of course, it is possible that a fair part of this byaka is on the conscience of Tytruba, recently she has been so brutal in video processing that I have stopped using it altogether.

Not well, go. nosleng performed by Ezoksa-ento over expected, culture, clips and that's all...
And the fact that Ezox does not shoot with sub-cameras is also clear, where do we get to a resident of a prosperous republic.. interseno here's what-what kind of megacams does Ezox use in his adventurous life?
After all, judging by the level of his criticism, he shot with iPhones, lumia, and real adult cameras, which are shot in the light of the moon as in the daytime, and surely he chose something in the end?

12.08.2016 22:05, ИНО

I haven't been making movies lately. This is a very inconvenient thing to publish: you can't insert it into an article, conferences rarely have time to show it, and almost always there are technical difficulties. Even on the forum, you can upload tolkyo in the form of a small archive, lib through a brutal pipe. And the place, how much it eats the place... Now, if I worked as a cameraman for some wildlife channel, then yes...

To see how advanced smartphones shoot videos, it is not necessary to buy them all, there are many test videos on the web. Moreover, there are even specialized programs on TV, sorry, on zomboyashchik, which pan never watches. There you can also see about the cameras that" in the light of the moon as in the daytime " shoot. They shoot, by the way, from the 80s, or even from the 70s. And I do not mean the night sky, the color picture is there.

12.08.2016 22:55, Hierophis

Everything is clear.. wall.gif

12.08.2016 23:12, ИНО

Well, yes, if you constantly bang your forehead against the wall with force, then soon EVERYTHING in the world becomes clear... I guess I haven't tried it. Therefore, the only thing that is clear from this discussion for me - the camera that Pan Stepovoy used to shoot Germanik - is bullshit. Let it have a matrix with at least three times high sensitivity. Although in fact the sensitivity is there, like sensitivity, just noise reduction is brutal. For some reason, I suspected the smartphone, because usually such spiteful shumodavs are shoved into smartphones, because there is no other way on tiny matrices.

But still, I would like to clarify the question about "THAT VERY nest", it seems that Pan did not use such a drive in this topic before. And if the video is titled "Germanics2", then where did the vulgaris go?

This is the nest that the hornets made in my attic. It looks like an ordinary hornet. They behave relatively well, but the colony is growing too fast. And I would like to ask a respected community of wasp enthusiasts - is it feasible to move their nest to a nearby forest?

Everywhere they offer and discuss only ways to destroy them. Is it possible to save their lives?
