Help with the caterpillar. It seems that there should be something simple, but it is not searched on the Internet in any way. It's a pity to let go, but it's not clear what to feed. Caught today, July 31, in the north of the Moscow region, the edge of a pine forest

Perhaps I'm not a specialist in them, if you cook it, I'll say on the genitals, and so a complex group.

Thank you very much! I just watched about Zygaena loti ... I didn't find milk thistle among the larval food plants, and the butterfly itself was photographed on it...? Is it possible that she just sat on it and has nothing to do with this plant?

Of course, it is possible that the butterfly feeds on different flowers, not only on the caterpillar feed plant.

Is C. pustulata a subspecies of C. lactucae?

Since 2009, these are two separate species, and Cucullia lactucae pustulata has been accepted as synonyms for C. pustulata

Hello.
This one looks like a scoop with a pronounced personality, but they are very similar, but I didn't find it completely identical. What do you think, dear Soviet experts?wink.gif

Yes, it is definitely Melanthia mandshuricata, and in the place where it is collected, it is celebrated.

and specifically E. antaggregata, which Mironov considers a synonym of E. pernotata(GME4)

What data is this based on?

On the border of the Chelyabinsk region with Kazakhstan, in Troitsk, in August 2017, 3 pieces were collected, and on Lake Sasykal in the Kastanai region, already in Kazakhstan, at the same time - 5 pieces. Collected Smirnov E., a young entomologist from Biysk. The species is univoltine, confined to steppe stations, hemixerophilic, I believe that it is necessary to search more widely, in the corresponding biotopes of the region, from late July to mid-August. The butterfly almost does not fly to the light, like C. magnifica (this one sometimes arrives), you need to look for places where the food plant Artemisia scoparia grows, a dense trophic connection.
