on the battery is good, but under a direct light source does not stotit put, because it can burn out

I'll try, of course.
But something is clearly wrong with it.

31.08.2008 17:06, RippeR

maybe it's some kind of spider venom (if that's the case) so it works by preserving its juice to preserve the product..
It may take more than a year to dry it..

I have a different story - 2 specimens of venustus and 1 granulatus tellurius, which I spread out in the spring, but they still haven't dried up. They have adopted the posture I gave them, but if you start moving their limbs, they bend very easily. But they were lying on cotton wool for about 5 months!
I think it's because of how they were killed or when.. or because of what?? They may not have been properly dried after killing.

perhaps the wetted exepplyars (the same thing happens in fresh, but slightly dried butterflies) were torn during straightening, and therefore the joints remained slightly povizhny even after drying. In this case, only glue will help.

Please advise me how best to spread the long" tails " of the hind wings of peacock eyes. And then they all strive, after being removed from the straighteners, to curl unnaturally at the ends and, moreover, sag to the very bottom of the box.

28.03.2009 23:56, RippeR

and how much do you keep on the straighteners?

29.03.2009 0:19, Aaata

Depending on the size. - 10-14 days, close to the battery, when the air is noticeably dry (during the heated period). In general, it is enough that the wings themselves do not descend (or rather, almost do not descend) in the future. But the "tails", especially in the" long-tailed " saturnias (Actias, Argemma), are not very docile.

29.03.2009 0:36, RippeR

often pigeons should be kept for at least a month..

Try to hold it for more than a month at least once. If it works , this will be your answer. If you noticed, many butterflies do not dry out badly in 10 days, but then over time they shrink a little more, which is why they slightly reject the early form. This usually happens after about a month in the box..

Of course, you can try it. Although this will slow down the work very much, because it creates problems with the release of straighteners. And the risk of infection with leatherworms increases... frown.gif

I really want to know how best to display the undersides of butterflies ' wings in a scientific collection. I saw two ways: the first, when the butterfly spreads out classically only with its underside up, and the second, when the butterfly is pricked with its wings folded sideways. Thank you in advance!

29.09.2009 18:46, Анна

smile.gif Unfortunately, I have an ordinary box smile.gifand yet I want to know how to do this in a scientific collection.

29.09.2009 19:06, DavBaz

Yes, it seems to me that this is not a matter of principle...but in the case of folded wings sideways less fuss..yes, and save space.Although I use the first method to set the ipods

if the collection is scientific, then you can not straighten it sideways (but then you must pull out the genitals for a vreno definition, although this is quite not very clear - and if you have to compare the top and bottom of this ex!)
Therefore, it is better to straighten normally, but just upside down )
Or you can also nomralno straighten (if the material is soaked and not straightened fresh!), and then turn it upside down (remove from the pin, turn it over, put it on)))

Thank you very much!

there is a third way. a box with a glass bottom.

...or mirror, then you don't need to turn the box over-I saw this in some museum, in the exhibition.

If I decide to make a collection for the museum, I will definitely think about it!

Here's the story:

Now the actual question is: what does not allow the butterfly to dry out and how to dry it and give it a collector's look?
All of the above applies to another specimen, also found dead in the grass, but practically fresh (Idaea emarginata).

Most likely, you found the result of hunting a wasp that carried a butterfly paralyzed by its venom to put it in a hole and lay its egg on it, but on the way dropped it. The venom of these wasps paralyzes the victim but does not kill it so that the larva of the wasp always has fresh "canned food"for food. Probably this poison did not allow the butterfly to dry out.

Sometimes, after spreading and drying some beetles - mainly Barbels, both Palearctic and tropical, and some Lamellate Whiskers, I noticed that there was a divergence in the sides of the terminal edges of the elytra along the median line, of varying degrees of severity.

Can you tell me how to prevent this or how to deal with it?

20.05.2010 9:14, Victor Titov

When straightening, you should "squeeze" the elytra from the sides with pins, fixing them in their natural closed position. And remove the "retainers" only after they are completely dry.

Well, what to do with softlings, they have soft elytra.Just do it carefully?

20.05.2010 11:56, Victor Titov

I, actually, do not collect softlings. But from the experience of spreading red wings (Lycidae), which I am interested in, I can notice the following. It is better to straighten them immediately on the die, gluing them to it in the chest area and behind the tip of the abdomen (as if stretching) - then they almost do not decrease-they do not deform when drying. And the elytra, so as not to diverge, should also be carefully tucked in from the sides-propped up with pins so that the seam closes.

you can also gently press pins to the foam, sticking the pins almost parallel to the foam..

Guys, here's a question that came up. Where can I get cork oak bark? It's too much fun for me to edit beetles on it, but there is one piece, and even that one has already worn out.

Aha, at batocer they can not be otherwise.

28.08.2010 10:14, Monstr

Greetings, gentlemen.
We need a good rasprovshchik for mounting insects 1-15 mm on dies.I'm based in St. Petersburg.. Volumes depend on the mount speed. You can pay with money and materials( beetles). Write in PM or discuss on the Forum.

28.08.2010 10:15, Monstr

That is, at the congress.

perhaps you are simply not used to or have not seen the specifics of spreading beetles in this individual))) http://molbiol.ru/forums/index.php?showtopic=238832&st=150
smile.gif original and even interesting. So I was surprised that I suddenly bent my mustache back, not typical for the highly respected Basil

Yes, I have such a habit, but in this situation this is the only way out (for me).
San, and you so apparently did not achieve (what we talked about the day before yesterday)? It's sad, but apparently the congress will have to wait. smile.gif
PS Guys, no one answered me about the bark: Does anyone have this case (well, I don't recognize any "foams")?

Vasily, there are such - cork floors. They are assembled from square flat slabs made of cork oak bark. It looks like that's what you need. Look in the stores of finishing materials, where there are probably substandard pieces. The Internet is also full of answers to the query "cork floor".

These panels are specially treated to increase hardness and wear resistance, so I think pins will not fit well in them. There are similar wall panels, those are softer.

I wonder why in this video a guy pierces his wings? Is this acceptable?
And the butterfly is so twirling in his hands, how else did the tails not fall off confused.gif

08.11.2010 23:22, RippeR

very rude.. What tolkyo man teaches.. Then they'll all be butterflies with terrible holes in their wings. Not, of course, sometimes the wings are pierced, but not special and not always )

09.11.2010 18:46, okoem

sometimes the wings are pierced, but not special and not always )

In wet thickheads, it is sometimes easier to immediately pierce the wing and fix it with a pin than to try for a long time and unsuccessfully fix it with a strip and eventually scratch and tear it....

09.11.2010 19:10, taler

And I can say that the guy is a pro.I watched his movements-clear, especially the fixation of the abdomen and antennae.Clearly not the first time.Showed clearly to beginners, in a simple way.Of course, fixing pins in the wings of a still-living butterfly is a horror, but nevertheless, a visual aid for beginners is available. And you wanted him to suffer with a soaked golubyanka or pyadenka?!Movies!

09.11.2010 20:22, Hierophis

I liked it, at least I looked at something about catching insects) The table of course was set there, in the wind, binoculars, detectors, and dry material-the wind will blow and everything will fly smile.gifaway

10.11.2010 0:11, RippeR

we must try. and such a huge butterfly does not show how to pull the veins - blasphemy. He may be a long time ago and has learned a lot, but if he does this to everyone, then his great experience is worthless.

And with thickheads, the thing is that sometimes it doesn't work out without punctures, but this is not a reason not to try at all. With them, the problem is often in the design of the straightener itself. If I had such straightening tools like this guy, the problems would be much less.
