I sort out the bins of the motherland, and so all the mounted insects, on sewing pins, which at the moment can not be tolerated nizzzya, well, at least very inconvenient, respectively, all who do not go to the scrap will be remounted to entomological pins. With scales, it is clear to stick a normal pin in place of the sewing machine and glue the PVA. What to do with eardrums and beetles?
Glue on a pin, the hole from the puncture of the sewing machine is an order of magnitude larger than the entomological one, it's a hemorrhoid, many have to be glued two or three times and still there is no guarantee that it will not spin.
Glue on the die, convenient, reliable, but in the pronotum or elytra, a gaping through hole.
Express your opinion in the best way, this is important to me.

Py. SY. All the beetles and eardrums I have on dies, so with a polemic glue or prick in the appropriate topic. The offer to throw out everything to the dog's dick, also does not suit, everything that deserves it and so will go there, what remains will be replaced if possible over time.

This is what it looked like before:

the last five years, the beetles do not appear at all, they die of starvation by emptying the intestines, especially important for dung beetles, in dead copra a year later, oily spots on the elytra began to appear.
I store all the material in cans with concertos made of cardboard , and in winter I straighten it out.
dry beetles are simply steamed and glued to the pva.

I liked the method of gluing beetles so much that I have been working only with dry material for several years and the dimensions do not matter

The method proposed by Ktyr is the level of the circle at the house of pioneers. Actually, it's all been thought up for a long time: how to mortise and mount. As for the John-ST case, it happens with old material. If the sewing needles themselves are not rusty and intact, then it is better not to touch them, but to make them heads, i.e. turn them into a kind of entomological ones. You can make a head either from epoxy, or from a solution of polystyrene (foam) in some solvent with the addition of plasticizer.

The main problem with sewing pins is their length, the label is right next to the insect and all this is right next to the filler, many animals are "straightened" in the old-fashioned way with their paws and whiskers bent under the stomach, pulling out, sticking, moving the label, segments of paws, whiskers and other protruding body parts cling and catastrophically disappear.

2KTYR
is not even a mug at the house of pioneers. I had or even have a pioneer book somewhere, it's quite well written about collection and storage, no worse than in Medvedev-Plavilshchikov, and it's probably taken from there if I find it.
First class, labor lesson, lesson topic: "Make an application using natural materials". It's not enough to hang aesthetics on the wall, except to give them to elementary classes. I remember in the USSR there were such visual materials for the textbook of natural science with limestones-granites, bears-worms, also under each copy of the numbers, and on the cover of the explanatory note. I was very taken aback in elementary school.

In this case, the antennae-legs should be spread out in the usual order, and the short pins themselves should be mounted as minutions, i.e. stuck in a block of something impaled on an ordinary pin, and there is already a label on it. Bees are rather large, so it is best to make a block of cork and additionally fix it on an entomological pin with glue - I have met such an old tire iron.

Pick up a pin as close as possible in thickness to the diameter of the hole after the needle and pin a small piece of cardboard under the insect on the pin. And glue already to this cardboard.
P. S. Now I do the same with old beetles: deputy...I did, but it's worth it.

I made collections on pins, and dragonflies and butterflies and caterpillars and beetles , and since I have long specialized only in beetles, then over time the usual method with pins became inconvenient, especially for small specimens, then over time I gave up on the generally accepted methods and rules, and since except for my friends and relatives, nothing those who do not understand collecting insects, no one sees my work, I glue to my delight , and who has ladybugs with beautifully spread legs on dies? and I have some beautifully glued ones. And I think my method has a lot of advantages . however, it is ideal only for beetles!

03.10.2011 0:35, ктырь

yes, I forgot to tell you about the problems with beetles on pins . there were many cases when it was often necessary to correct large and medium-sized specimens that were constantly shifting along the axis as a result of careless movements of the loss of antennae and limbs, over the years of course. then copies two millimeters long on the dies looked flawed and it was very difficult to work with them . That's why I came up with the gluing method .

of course , pins are ideal for butterflies, but beetles are other insects and this method is inconvenient for them, and many people recognize this.I have seen many collections where no attention was paid at all to spreading the legs and antennae of small beetles, but they were attached according to all the rules. and often in collections there are no beetles less than five millimeters in size at all, and in our fauna there are a lot of beetles of this size.

I stopped installing tags as unnecessary.

03.10.2011 0:44, ктырь

my collections don't literally hang on the walls , there are a lot of them , they are stacked in bookshelves . on the wall there is only one box 70/70 cm from the brightest and largest of our beetles , and the most interesting thing for me is the racehorses, zlatki, tubkoverty, hidden in the shelves

03.10.2011 7:01, captolabrus

And you would put up photos of collections.

??? confused.gifYes, that's it-know how! This is a grown - up thing! I imagine: ktyr went (went) "to the fields" (modestly, like for a weekwink.gif), and carries in his backpack live fees-dozens (hundreds? - it depends on the luck and skill of the collector) hungry, pooping beetles lol.gif lol.gif lol.gif. Super!!! Comments, in my opinion, are superfluous.
except for my friends and family, who don't know anything about collecting insects, no one sees my work

If I understand you correctly, among your friends there is not a single (!) fellow hobby?! Very strange (if not to say hoosier smile.gif) for someone who has been collecting insects, according to you, for at least a few (or even more) years.
yes, I forgot to tell you about the problems with beetles on pins...it was very difficult to work with them . That's why I came up with the gluing method .

What do you mean by "working with a collection"? Determine fees? With your method of mounting, this is difficult for most groups of beetles, to put it mildly (the bottom is sealed tightly, and peeling off each tendril-leg is a hemorrhoid). Do you publish and process content for your articles? Well, it's probably not tested, and therefore it's not suitable for this purpose just because of this. And sorting out - moving your cardboard boxes with beetles alone or in front of friends who don't know anything about insects-is, sorry, not working with the collection, but... the word was chosen, but if it is used in the message, it may lead to sanctions from the moderator for me.

I stopped installing tags as unnecessary.

If your material does not need, in your opinion, "tags" (in fact, they are called labels), then your collections are not a collection, but a cemetery of needlessly ruined beetles.

You will probably be surprised, but none of the more or less serious collectors do not post their fees on the walls. On the walls hang not collections, but decorative details of the interior.

Could you present the fruits of your labor-beetles less than 5 mm in size, spread out on dies? I wonder how you do it, i.e. I want to see the quality of the tire iron.

They are not accepted on the die, and it is problematic to determine them.
Either prick at a minuteness of 0.1 mm, or glue on the corner, depending on the situation.

Amazing rasp from Entalex. The question is as follows. What are the very rectangles that the micra is pinned on made of? Are these available for sale and where to buy them? Or from what to make them yourself?

At me zlatka 2,4 cm, already the third week does not dry up, paws still perfectly bend, antennae too, already and on the battery put that with it? she's not dead, is she? But she doesn't show any signs of life..

It looks like bars of isolon.

These can be safely pricked on pins, they have nothing to do on minutes - they are too large.

15.10.2011 22:59, Vlad Proklov

I don't know what it's called, but maybe it's isolon. I didn't find them on sale in this country, even at the fair, I order them in England. As an emergency option, you can cut dry birch tinder with a sharp knife (as entomologists did before the development of the organic polymer industry) - but it can be eaten by all sorts of people there...

16.10.2011 2:34, Proctos

Izolon bars, you can see that. The material for minutions is too large, you can prick at 0 and 00. Large carcasses will spin for minutes over time.

is it better to glue an ant on a die or on a transparent triangle?

they don't seem to have anything special on the bottom, pm on the die will be visible, I think

I don't know, we have a similar material - styrofoam, I use it on the bottom and for bars under the minutiae. Sold in hardware stores.

Styrofoam, izolon and Izhevsk tourist carpet-karemat are one and the same thing. I will be grateful for your criticism.

Everything is true, except that the mats are not always insulated. Izolon, Penolon-R, etc. are trademarks of radiation-crosslinked polyethylene foam (PPE). The mats are all completely colored, with embossed surfaces and differ in stiffness and pore size. Therefore they are suitable for our purposes with reservations smile.gif

And when is it Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say, 1824) sometimes white? It is always yellow-black and retains its color after drying relatively normally (only the pronotum with the head often brightens).
