The pupa of Cucullia lucifuga overwinters, the butterfly will appear in June.
However, I had a case that another Cucullia species, which was also supposed to hibernate, for some reason came out in the fall. Moreover, there were two pupae - and both came out.

And in winter, she needs some kind of care or just room conditions will do?

In winter - in the refrigerator.
Scroll through the topic, everything has already been told about this.

I would like to ask what plants the attacus atlas caterpillar feeds on?

19.08.2009 20:35, Славл

Under what conditions does Syntomis phegea L. pupate? (False mottled moth)? In early July, the caterpillars hatched, eat plantain leaves for the second month, somehow do not change much in size for a couple of weeks and, apparently,do not think to pupate. Tell me, dear forumchane, does the caterpillar of this species or pupa overwinter? Thank you.

Syntomis nigricornis pupates in spring. Probably phegea too.

Hello, my name is Lisa, I am 13 years old.
Two days ago, I found a lilac hawk moth caterpillar in the garden - I saved it by taking it away from a cat. The caterpillar has nothing damaged. I would like to grow a butterfly out of it. While it sits in my plastic jar under the net, it feeds on viburnum and lilac leaves. Every day I give her fresh leaves and clean up everything from the jar after her.
Could you give me a plan to take care of the caterpillar? What should I pay attention to when preparing a caterpillar for winter?
I will be very grateful for any advice, because this is my first experience in entomology.
Sincerely yours,
Lisa.

Keep it up, Lisa.
feed it better with lilacs. You can put a napkin on the bottom of the cage.
As the caterpillar changes color, fill it with at least half a jar of earth. The caterpillar buries itself in the ground and pupates. After a couple of weeks, you can dig out. In October, take them to the winter quarters. You can take a plastic box with slightly moist moss-sphagnum and put the pupa there. Make ventilation in the lid. Place the box in the refrigerator at t +5-0C. Check the moss once a week so that it doesn't dry out at all. In the spring, you will get a pupa and a butterfly will come out.
Good luck.

Guys tell me. smile.gif
Today 24.08.09 found a caterpillar Mimas tiliae in Odintsovo MO. Apparently already the last age and wants to pupa up. Are there any special features of growing this particular species? Or, as usual, fill the earth so that it pupates, then dig it out and put it in the refrigerator?
Thank you.

From personal experience. In order not to "watch what happens next" for two hours, dig a hole in the ground with your finger 4-5 centimeters deep, and put the caterpillar there. I personally started burrowing sideways pretty quickly. Then (well, when somewhere on 3 4 burrows) fall asleep with soil and all.

And stick in some twig so that the butterfly can find a place to dry its wings and get stronger.

  lol.gif Vasily, see post 472.

This is me from my own experience (so as not to get skinned). It is better to dry in the air.

Thank you so much for your advice. It's just that I'm just getting started!

Do entomologists from Khabarovsk (the nearest cities) come to this forum? I really need to contact you for a consultation. my e-mail address:xonic87@mail.ru

Do you have any idea if I should spray some water on her leaves?,
You can not spray in any case, otherwise you can get sick and die.

They asked me about Atlas.... lilac and privet are the best food...you can use ailant.

Can you tell me if the pupa of Cucullia umbratica overwinters?
I read all the posts, I see people hawkmoth, swallowtail display...Of course, I don't know much about them, but is it really impossible to find caterpillars of large beautiful butterflies in Siberia? I would like to try

I decided to try breeding swallowtails, before that the experience was only with hawkmoth. I want to buy some pupae or caterpillars of the swallowtail (Papilio machaon), Muscovites, who have, about the sale write here or in PM, thank you in advance.

Now is the time to just pick up the last-aged caterpillars right in the wild. At the congress on August 20, two pieces were found just along the way. They left with a Thaler for Israel and, as far as I know, have already pupated smile.gif

01.09.2009 22:45, Бабочник

Hm....it's much easier to catch a female and get a mate...collected geese are often infested by riders.

Of course they do. What are you interested in?

I just couldn't find it in Moscow, and I couldn't find it in the country either, although half the plot was planted with dill. And unfortunately, there is no time to go anywhere right now. So, who has, write prices)

If you want to catch a caterpillar, then go to the east, to the very border with Vladimirskaya and go along the railway ring in the direction of kirzhach-there you will come across an umbrella. The truth is often struck by riders (he broke off repeatedly). eek.gif

05.09.2009 11:28, Саламандра

Thanks for the tip, but no one breeds swallowtails at home? After all, drawbridges should be without riders?

Hello. I found a swallowtail caterpillar yesterday. Please tell me how to bring it to kukulka. What to feed? Well, does she need a substrate, if necessary, what kind? And do I need winter quarters?

Feed umbrella plants, dill for example, stallions, I don't know what grows there.... Look on the Internet, what else does it have forage.
The substrate is not needed, the Swallowtail pupates on the stem of the forage plant.
Wintering - apparently yes, there will be. You're probably cold, aren't you?" smile.gif

I don't know - maybe the conditions contribute to this? still, in the room, although on the windowsill with the window pane constantly open, i.e. the temperature is approximately as it is on the street now. Food is also plentiful. Here they are still all different sizes-they differ significantly, pupated approximately average in size.

Average?! confused.gif
Pupation of medium size is typical for species with well-defined dimorphism.
By the way, are you sure that these caterpillars are Syntomis phegea, and not another species? Can I see the photo?

how long does the carrion pupa hang approximately? last year, the butterfly hatched in two weeks, now it's been hanging for more than three. can I somehow stimulate the pupa/warm it up? or just wait? temperatura +26, 15-hour light day

okoem, I'm starting to understand where about a dozen caterpillars disappeared to shortly after they hatched

the image is no longer on the site: 21.jpg

over the past day, another caterpillar pupated, and the rest managed to eat a fresh pupa. some predators are these phegea caterpillars.

fresh food (plantain leaves standing in the water) while they are in abundance, what is the reason for this behavior? confused.gif
