I already have them on my balcony!
Another one came out right now... I put the rest of them in the refrigerator... Not worth it? How long then to wait for their release?

We need to examine the pupae. If you can see the silhouettes of the wings, then of course these pupae do not need to be put in the refrigerator, as they will soon come out.

It is not even clear whether to be happy or not, there will be nothing to feed in the case of offspring...

You just need to look for a green poplar tree and that's it. Everything is real!

It's still quite warm here, and there are still a lot of green poplars! The truth is to stock up on them for a whole month... I don't know. I'll probably just let you out.. On the same poplars ))

And why stock up on them? I went out and plucked the right amount and that's it. Green poplars can also be found in November. The truth is not easy to find.

You won't be able to disrupt the exit. You need to go. We do not have poplars in the city itself ))

So what should I do with the pupae? Take a look at them, please ))

It's hard to tell from the photo. Alas, this is always the case with the Smerinthinae. Try to gently touch and press a little on the pupae. If the butterflies are already ready to leave, then the pupae will be soft.

One or two white-leaved trees on the school grounds. But tall and old. I won't reach the foliage ))

I released my four friends today. My mother managed to leave me 15 testicles...

In the USSR, poplar trees were planted everywhere on roads, except in the far north and deserts. You didn't cut them all out, did you?

Strange. There is no particular fire hazard in live poplars, especially with your humidity. You already have a lot of trees in the city, just one stone.

And here, not because of the fire hazard, but because of their increased fragility, they were cut down. With strong winds like ours, it's not safe for cars, cars, and people...

Tell this to my comrade in the region, who a year ago burned down a car in the yard in this way, and it's good that one-fluff stuffed down, plus some pieces of wood, or rags next to the trash dropped.
A spark, a bull, an idiot - and that's it, fluff flares up at the moment, if there is a fire-supporting material nearby, you get a fire.

Poplars for a megalopolis are PMSM, an ideal tree for gardening, they grow quickly, there are a lot of tops, they root without problems - and only one "but": fluff, horror for allergy sufferers and for firefighters.

08.10.2017 1:30, ИНО

Fluff fades as easily and quickly as it flares up, not having time to set fire to even dry grass, let alone a car. And it flares up not from a bull, but, at least, from a match, i.e. as a result of purposeful arson. And now the most important thing: poplar is a dioecious plant, easily cloned. Mostly only males were used for road casing. So it is not necessary to switch the arrows from hooligans-pyromaniacs to any innocent plant. That is, no fluff.

Regarding the fragility: it is typical only for dry poplars, of course, they should be cut down (and also cut down dry branches of living trees). Live poplar is extremely flexible. Only the strongest squall can fill it up, and then uprooting it. But this is true for almost all types of trees.

I'm back with questions))).

In a jar with "earth" pupae found something similar to the head of a caterpillar))). Does she discard it before pupating? (sounds sillysmile.gif)). But very interested.

1. Raspberry cocoonworm lives as a caterpillar on the balcony: content in a container of 5l. bottles with drilled holes, gauze on top. Inside is sand (she buried herself in it), sphagnum moss on top. Leaves on top. All right? Or it should be transplanted into something like a net. Do I need to moisturize?
2. Two pupae of moths stand warm on the windowsill, in natural light near the battery (they were not exposed to the cold) Temperature 22-23. Humidity 50.
The pupae are alive. They don't seem to be going out, but they can't put it in the refrigerator either. Is there a chance of getting out?

3. Two pupae of moths were sent from the balcony to the refrigerator for +4 hours in sphagnum. Just moisturize?

4. My unfortunate sorrel scoop (pupated in a leaf). I couldn't remove the leaf, it fits very snugly. It is located at a temperature of 21-22 on the windowsill. It doesn't come out. I think it's not fate anymore....

5. There is also a second pupa hanging out, probably a scoop, also alive, also does not plan to appear from the ground.

And if indoor plants are already stored without land? Or do they necessarily need to wade through the layers of soil, if suddenly they still want to hatch?

1. The main thing during the wintering of raspberry cocoonworms is that the caterpillars do not dry out and become covered with mold due to moisture. Therefore, they should be stored in a cold place.

2. I would remove the pupae away from the battery, otherwise they will dry out. On the windowsill, if it is not hot, then you can leave it. Wait for them to come out.

3. Simply moisten and make sure that there is not too much water or it is not too dry.

4. What's wrong with the leaf? Just carefully you can see if the pupa is alive or not.

They can be stored not only in the groundsmile.gif, but also in sphagnum. The main thing is that the butterfly has somewhere to climb and spread its wings.

Friends, good day to all!
Again, raspberry Macrothylacia rubi. Mine has been successfully sleeping in a garden with soil for 20 days, with a layer of clover on top. lightly moisturize about 1 time a week. If it is now moved from the balcony to the heat will the process of transformation into an imago go?

28.10.2017 17:07, NIKSTER

I'll give you 0.5% for this smile.gif. In nature, too, there is a kind of warming and caterpillars crawl out in late autumn on warm days. Still, it's better to wait until spring.

Hello. I collected variegated moth caterpillars at my dacha. At home they lived in an aquarium covered with gauze and ate nettles. Almost all of them have turned into pupae and have been hanging and not moving for more than a month frown.gifIs this death or diapause?

How to save them until spring on the balcony, in the refrigerator or in the country in the cellar? On the balcony, the temperature is about 5 degrees higher than on the street. If you wrap it up with a wool blanket, then there will be no sharp temperature changes and in winter it should stay near zero.

On the balcony, as long as they don't dry out.
After the new year, you can get it for breeding.

Gennadich thank you. Can someone tell me what book to read about life in nature and how to raise butterflies in captivity. Then many questions will become clear. Preferably in Russian and that would be easy to buy or download. I am now very interested in butterflies that are found in the middle zone and the Black Sea coast.

And they only come out of diapause in their own time? Or if sustained heat and light can wake up?

If the sun warms up and the weather is relatively warm, they may come out earlier. But it is best to keep everyone on the balcony. The caterpillars themselves will feel the approach of spring.

I welcome you all. Who bred heliconide? Is it true that they have an unpleasant smell? Can you feel it in the cage?

I got my cocoonworm from the balcony. I put him in water at room temperature, he swam in a ring, straightened up, drank water, crawled and wove a cocoon. But I must have made a mistake-I left it in a low plastic container with sphagum, and it looked like I should have put a twig in it. The poor guy stuck the cocoon to the plastic. I'll attach a photo of the cocoon later. It is empty on top and the caterpillar has been trying to get to the top of it periodically for the second day. Then down the cocoon goes. I'm not sure now that everything will be all right.

And another question, does it need wet sphagnum? how much to spray, the house is very dry, the moss dries completely in a few hours. The room temperature is 22 degrees

Perhaps the caterpillar continues to weave a cocoon, so it turns alternately up and down. I also wove like this for 3 days. I can't say for sure about the moisture content. But don't overdo it. All efforts will be justified when a beauty or a handsome man comes out.

Oh, our cocoonworm hatched. Alive.... But....
Tell me, it's clear with the wing, apparently they didn't comply with all the conditions of detention, but what is it on the back? Can there be parasites? It is necessary to feed it, like they do not feed in imago? I'll attach a photo
