These are eggs. Kokonorayad raspberry got out, the female and immediately began throwing unfertilized eggs, which she was stuck with.

How common is it when a female lays unfertilized eggs? I've seen this happen in female bears. And more. Do females, especially large ones, get all their eggs fertilized in one mating session or not?

11.03.2018 19:54, ИНО

It seems that it is 100% common (in bears). I think the answer to the second question is yes.

tell me, please, whether it is possible to pull pupae of cocoonworms out of cocoons, or they will die without a cocoon? the caterpillars in the cage hid a "collective cocoon" (despite the fact that they had more than enough space to make separate ones) and I fear that the butterflies from the center of this "coma" will not be able to win in the end

From the "collective cocoon" - it is better to pull out. Or separate them into separate cocoons, if possible. You don't need to choose from individual ones. But it is better to tear them slightly on the head side.

About "breaking the cocoon" is this your knowhow? What kind are we talking about?

12.06.2018 23:35, okoem

What kind are we talking about?

We are talking about species that pupate in close quarters, or in green leaves. If you do not tear the cocoons, then some butterflies can not get out of them.

thank you for the advice, we dismantled the cocoons, some seemed strangely large, opened them, and there were several pupae inside, it's not clear how they could pupate at all without damaging each other. some cocoons contained up to 5 pupae.

the caterpillar cage was very spacious, I don't know why they decided to do what they did. only a small part hid separate cocoons from the "common", most decided to join the "dorm"

SAVE THE CATERPILLARS!
I picked up eggs at a tropical butterfly show and was told that they were ailanthus silkworm (Samia cynthia) and morpho (Morpho peleides), but the caterpillars that came out of the eggs don't want to eat lilac, maple, or clover. They don't look like either Samia cynthia or Morpho peleides. One has already died. Please tell me who it is, save the poor devils.

Is it possible to feed calligo caterpillars with banana fruit?

It is very doubtful, you can use leaves. Forage plants for this genus are very exotic, which I think can be found in stores of live ornamental plants. Here is a link to care for Kaligo caterpillars.

A very long time ago, I also pupated a pavonia caterpillar, it was in the country. I opened the dense cocoon and left it in the jar without doing anything else. A butterfly came out in the spring.

Friends, hello everyone!
Please give me some advice. The female swallowtail is full of eggs, can not lay independently because the middle and hind legs are damaged, bends the abdomen on the plant, but there is nothing to cling to and nothing comes out of it. I read somewhere that you can get eggs by pressing on the abdomen or something like that. Who knows please tell me what to do.

You can try to put the plant on the bottom of the box, so of course it will wither quickly, but the butterfly will be in constant contact with it. About pressing on the abdomen for the first time I hear, I'm afraid so much more likely to damage the butterfly. I have cocoonworms from the strain of laying eggs when I held them in my hands and they wriggled in an attempt to get out. This focus doesn't work for daytime users. Try to lay a carpet from a forage plant on the bottom of a wide box or jar and a butterfly on top, as in a bed.

Knowledgeable breeders podskajiet please, when leaving the egg, the caterpillars of Actias artemis crawl and do not eat anything, and after a day they become sluggish and die without starting to eat. I gave them oak, rowan, and cherry trees. Someone chewed the cherry once, and that was the end of a dozen corpses. Who bred these butterflies, do they need bright light, what is the lower limit of acceptable temperature?
Humidity crowding, egg defects and other similar factors please do not mention, this option is excluded if the caterpillars are kept on the advice of the person who received these eggs in culture. He's all right, but I've got people dying. We live very far from each other, the weather is different, the plants are different. What could be the problem?

I gave them oak, rowan, and cherry trees.

I grew best on a plum tree. An ordinary plum, some Hungarian woman, taken from a vacant lot.

Worse - on nuts (not hazel, but the leaves of trees of the genus Juglans), apparently, Manchurian, gray and walnut.
Even worse - on the cherry oak and very barely-on the red and marsh.

They started eating themselves, but I was advised to tear the edges of the leaves, such as the smell of juice stimulates food activity.

I am trying to breed attacus lorquini, the other day I managed to get a simultaneous exit from the pupae of males and females and make mating, I want to try to feed part on privet, part on mountain ash, the only fear is whether the caterpillars will have time to pupate before the leaves on the trees turn yellow and become unsuitable for food? I am located 500 km south of Moscow. Like I read, they spend ten days in the egg stage and a month and a half in the caterpillar stage? Are there people living in approximately the same part of Russia? Tell me, will I have time to feed the caterpillars? But even if I don't have time, at least I'll get some experience caring for caterpillars so that I can try again in the spring.

AGG, yes, Lipetsk, so the climate is the same in Lipetsk, Tambov, and Voronezh. So it is interesting when in our area forage plants end in autumn.

03.09.2018 23:12, Foxkot

I found the caterpillar Pachypasa otus on the path, which was viciously gnawed by small ants and from which it ran away. I put it in a box and brought it home. Settled in a small aquarium, with 4 types of suitable food. The very next day, I started to weave a web and today, after 4 days, it is completely wrapped in a cocoon.
The question is-what to do with it next? How to guarantee survival and transformation into a butterfly ? (no previous experience )

Attacuses are growing slowly. And in between, Belyanok brought out a clean workout.

People, tell me who understands what kind of equipment is needed to maintain humidity, temperature in the insectarium approximately 2 x 2 x 2.5 (height)m. Culture-tropical butterflies (for example, Melpomene), temperature in the insectarium +26 —+28 humidity of 70 - 80% is maintained.
What kind of lighting is needed (power, spectrum)??
In general, all the necessary equipment for crossing, growing and breeding tropical butterflies with this quadrature (you can use it with a margin)

They found a caterpillar on a snapdragon. Lives in a bank. Please tell me what kind of caterpillar it is, and whether it has a chance of becoming a butterfly (if so, what should I do). Thanks

Caterpillar scoops Helicoverpa armigera. Feed different plants, she eats almost any. It will feed and pupate for several days (it is necessary to fill it with soil in advance). The butterfly will be released either in the coming weeks or in the spring (after the pupa hibernates in the refrigerator).

Thank you very much, but how do you know if she needs winter quarters or not? Does it need branches, or is it burrowing into the soil?

23.10.2018 14:58, okoem

It doesn't need branches. Take a box with rough walls (cardboard or similar), pour a layer of 2-3 cm of soil, preferably slightly moist. Tighten the top with a cloth. Then she'll figure it out for herself.
You can't understand about wintering-just wait. If the pupa does not darken in two or three weeks, then put it in the refrigerator until green grass appears.
If the pupa starts to darken, then soon there will be a butterfly.

23.10.2018 23:49, melan4oly

Thank you so much for the answer, we are trying to pupatesmile.gif) while she is happy to eat everything and actively crawl smile.gif

24.10.2018 7:30, okoem

When the caterpillar is actively crawling , it means that some conditions do not suit it. So one of two things - either eats, or actively crawls. Caterpillars that have finished feeding before pupation also actively crawl.

24.10.2018 7:54, melan4oly

They brought her a snapdragon from the dacha, now she doesn't crawl anywhere, but sits on it and eats. The ground was filled in, we are waiting...

Hello. The caterpillar is buried in the bottom of the box, something like a crust on top, and still a caterpillar on the bottom. How do you know that it has already pupated, and do you need to remove the cocoon later? If you don't touch it, how do you know that it changes color?

Don't touch anything. Wait, after some time it will pupate.
