On the death's head: two from the Crimea, one from Olbia. In Donetsk, it seems that there are no or very few of them.

Hello! I want to breed podmorennikov and wine (medium) hawkmoth next spring. To do this, in August, I collected three larvae, now they have pupated and entered diapause. The question is: after the release of the adult, after what time will the individuals be ready to mate?

Gentlemen, Is it possible to grow a beech fork-tail caterpillar at home? I found it on a hazel tree, it seems to eat, but somehow not very actively.

Change the food every two days, or better yet every day. If placed in some closed vessel, then it is necessary to ventilate often, otherwise it will die.

Dear NIKSTER, I want to consult you about my Macrothylacia rubi. As you wrote to our brother in the KingSnake hobby about the vessel and feeding so that it does not die. Do you think it is possible to keep Macrothylacia rubi for additional feeding in such a container, periodically moistening the foliage? Or do you need more space? Initially, she lived in a large mesh cage with the ground at the bottom, but could not find the foliage and crawled up the grid and now in this small box began to feed. Do you think there is enough ventilation? I think Dear KingSnake will also be interested in this.

This space is quite enough. I'd even put two more caterpillars in, so there's plenty of room and air smile.gif.

As a variant of keeping caterpillars and some butterflies. I use laundry baskets from Fix Price, sewing a fabric with a zipper on the top.

Plenty of ventilation. The main thing is that the caterpillars do not escape through these holes wink.gif
And the excrement will need to be removed as it accumulates.

This is a yes! Sometimes you wake up in the morning, look into the garden and scratch the turnips, in the evening the ground seems to be gone. How can you shit like that??? smile.gif

No, you have confused this with the raspberry cocoonworm smile.gif
The beech fork tail overwinters at the pupal stage.

Good afternoon again.
My pupa in the bank and hanging for a month))). The leaf has dried up, what is happening inside is not visible. I found information that Acronicta rumicis hatches 12-15 days after pupation. That is, do not wait for a butterfly already?

Check the pupa to see if it is dry. If they were moistened, then everything should be in order.
It may also be that she decided to spend the winter, as in nature.

I'll probably ask a strange question, but still.
There is a graphium chrysalis on the hands. It is contained in a jar, the humidity is normal, the temperature is 22-25 degrees.
And being suspended, the pupa is constantly "twitching". Well, more precisely, not constantly, but once every 3-4 hours it sways or shudders sharply. I'm glad she's alive, but could that be a bad sign?

You should be happy that it is movingsmile.gif, which means that it is alive and the transformation cycle is normal.

It's just the pupae I used to have before...well, they weren't that active. So I don't have to worry too much about it?)

I think so.

25.09.2017 18:13, Екатерина182

1. Disassembled the "collection" in the soil. Unearthed moth pupae. They are also actively twitching. It's good that they are alive-I understood from the previous answers)), but this does not mean that they are going to go out? In general, 10 days have passed since pupation, in theory they still have to spend the winter.

If not, is it time to send it to the refrigerator? Should I cover the container with napkins?

2. Does the raspberry cocoonworm overwinter as a caterpillar? Right? I do not have so many raspberry leaves)))

1. A couple of days before the release of the pupa, you can see the formed wings of a butterfly, that's when it will come out. Put the container in the refrigerator and spray its contents with a spray gun. The container must be ventilated. If there is no ventilation, then look for any color changes of the napkin in the refrigerator. If it starts to get blotchy, replace the cloth and thoroughly rinse and dry the container.

2. M. rubi overwinters at the caterpillar stage. Why do you need raspberry leaves, they are almost finished and they do not need food.

Two silly questions:
1. And if you do not clean up for the winter, can they hatch earlier?
2. Send the caterpillar to the balcony? She's still eating)))

1. This is how it works. They can come out earlier, and they can come out on time. It is possible in the cold for normal wintering and get it, as there will be a stable plus outside the window.
2. You can.

Lech, is she still alive?

26.09.2017 2:25, Romanov2000

Hello Maxim!
Alive but there are no raspberry blackberry leaves, what to feed? Doesn't the oak tree fit??? Maybe someone else knows?

26.09.2017 2:31, Romanov2000

Gentlemen,
Please tell us what food is suitable for Macrothylacia rubi. Fed 2 weeks with a raspberry leaf, successfully, eats like an elephant and shits the same way! smile.gif Now there is no access to raspberries, in the wiki (which I don't trust) it is written that the mass of plants???

I haven't used raspberries in a long time. It is better to use what grows on the ground.
You can use strawberries (Fragaria).

Tell me, the question is a bit strange, but still.
Already the third butterfly of graphium refuses to eat on its own. It is necessary to plant on a saucer and literally poke the proboscis into the solution, after which the butterfly begins to eat. If anyone has encountered it, tell me, is this normal, or maybe something in the environment does not suit them?

Hello everyone
This year I had a chance to become a "mother" of 24 eggs of Poplar hawk moth.
15 caterpillars survived (care errors and 2 missing...). All 15 burrowed into the ground on September 14.
I was looking for information about the release of butterflies: this year again or next year. I was reassured that now I can relax until May. But no! One hatched today! I don't know what to do now... From what so, prompt?! Too warm?

04.10.2017 14:14, ИНО

Well, yes, without wintering in the cold, few butterflies wait for spring.

So, they already need to be put in the refrigerator?
We were standing on the balcony, 17 degrees outside the window. They put me in a room for one night (they forgot to take it out again). It was 26-27 degrees...

04.10.2017 19:55, ИНО

One night sometimes solves a lot. And when did they pupate?

What should I do?

04.10.2017 20:37, Василий пенза

There is a chance that one or more butterflies will come out, and most of them will go into diapause. Of course, if you do not store it in a warm place.

The garden stands on the balcony...
The daytime temperature is now up to 22 degrees. At night 15-16 approximately.

Could the heat have formed a small butterfly? And her color is much darker than my mother's.

A small butterfly is the result of under-feeding or a male. And with the rest, I would do this: wait a couple of weeks to allow all the ready-made butterflies to come out, and if they don't come out, then you can safely start them in diapause. And if they all come out soon, it means that you took too good care of them)

The poplar hawk moth has a third generation. It happens with a fairly warm autumn and, accordingly, not every year. Moreover, butterflies of the "unscheduled" generation are always scarce. Your house was obviously quite warm, so one of them hatched.

Highlighted it in bold. About the heat wrote above. For example, if the caterpillars of the poplar hawk moth pupate, let them lie down for three days, and then put them in the refrigerator for the winter.

And how to determine which pupae can be put in the refrigerator now, and which ones are already too late - butterflies will come out?

By the way, two more came out.

It's too late to hide the pupae. I'm afraid I'll have to wait until everyone comes out. What remains to put in the refrigerator or on the balcony.

I already have them on my balcony!
Another one came out right now... I put the rest of them in the refrigerator... Not worth it? How long then to wait for their release?

The latter turned out to be disabled... weep.gif
