Do dectiuses sing loudly? I just have them on the balcony without sound insulation live, the neighbors may not like it

Loud enough, especially in chorus. Haven't you ever heard of it in nature?
I, for example, search for everyone by their singing.
However, the neighborhood punchers, drills, grinders and radio Radonezh with a chanson also sing not quietly. They'll survive.

07.07.2016 10:25, GrigorY66

Decticus verricivirus sings much quieter than viridissima, and almost only in the sun, so it won't get in the way during the day. A dry-ringing warbling trill. Dimensions do not matter, look at the elytra - if the veins are longitudinal - then the sound is more muffled, if short - higher and sonorous. So all the big ones have a blacksmith.
At me on a balcony in general a black bimakulyat lived-here there neighbors hung up at night))

07.07.2016 22:02, ИНО

I don't agree with you. Not quieter (at least to my ears). And not only during the day (although mostly). There are two forms of verrucivorus: one is a large, full - winged southern verrucivorus, and the other is a small, short-winged northern verrucivorus. Maybe the last one is really chirping softly, but I haven't had a chance to listen.

07.07.2016 23:41, GrigorY66

Good evening."
1)Southern decticus maybe you meant albifrons? I have such live, from the Caucasus, winter eggs in the steppe scored, now 3 imago and one 3rd molt, later took the egg out of the refrigerator. And you meant the northern ones on Dec.vericivirus?, that live in the Moscow and Leningrad region to the Crimea. Then comes the range of its southern counterpart all the way to Egypt - Dec.albifrons, which is more agile and flies faster than the Emperor's sentinel. So are the tettigonians: the cantans from Leningrad to Belarus, and then it is replaced by the viridissima to the equator.
2)Yes, the cricket, Grillus bimaculatus, is the loudest of all the straight-winged ones, chirping with veins. My pet shop, gnawed was-of course not so loud. But at the end of the yard it was clearly audible, how are the neighbors from above?) But how they sing along the Black Sea coast-the sound is high, rolling, in silence you can hear for half a km. And you can't stand around at all - it hits your eardrums. But it is only young imagos living in the wild who can make such loud serenades. There are also steppe and thick field, but their sound is lower. By the way, they are found in Donetsk. All the arable land is pitted with their holes-you probably noticed it yourself.

1) Large vericivirus apparently did not meet, that's why I thought about albifrons. Although I once saw a "colored" female in the Leningrad region, with very long wings, but in the body it is smaller than the previous one. And the albifrons really fly and move very quickly, perhaps it depends on the high temperature of the air in their habitats.
2)Well, not all of them, but I know for sure that the bimaculate cricket, which lives in nature on its own, is the loudest. You probably haven't seen them before. Those males were black as coal - there's a picture somewhere. And their pet shop, bred in captivity to gather -either reddish-brown, or gray-black-and-white with incomplete pigment. As for the stem (this is which is pale and thin, as I understand you meant?) the sound is not so strong and after 30m you can no longer hear it, it starts to get lost.
3) I described the habitats of changing species approximately, and there may be some nuances in Belarus, but point populations of Viridissimus are already beginning to appear in the middle of the Pskov region. And in Ukraine, cantans are found in separate populations in forest groves, which are cooler and protected from direct sun than open areas. And they are still some small in size.

I constantly catch up with albifrons,my speed is at least 2-3 meters per second, but I also caught up with Viridissima, and quite the fastest erect wing is locusta migratoria, it flies at a speed of 15 km/h .Not when I haven't seen cantans in the last 5 years,in 2010 I met a male cantans on the old street on the same lapukhe together with a caudata,a male cantans and a female caudata.I measured the Albifrons ' flight speed,it's 2 meters per second, and the Imperator Sentinel is 14 meters per second. And today I myself saw how the sparrow did not catch up with the cicada, and the cicada is 6 meters per second.

Did you measure all this by radar?

Good afternoon! I found swordsmen in the St. Petersburg area, which is very strange. They were never here. I'll try to hold them usebya, caught 2 predymago. Probably you should not put them in a terrarium with verrucivorus?

And what are the swordsmen's names? IMHO, In terra in the photo there is not enough tall grass or branches. And I also take genuine containers with slightly moist peat or something similar there to collect eggs (if, of course, there is someone to lay them). And what kind of hodgepodge is there inside? One decticus and its hunting objects?

Kolez, the terrarium is normal, but the device is certainly not very good.. the soil is better peat + sow buckwheat or wheat, and more branches )
I also saw swordsmen on a fishing trip today, and once I brought ruspolia from the same places, so it gave me a fever at night, I had to let it out )))

And I didn't take any predators and caught some swamp fillies. They are not practically choirboys. I'll see how long they live. Sometimes I met them in late autumn, in October.picture: 89787_55454.jpg

I let the swamp fillies go. They tried to nibble on my ferns, and not those that are large, but those that are tree-like, grow in glasses. Grass is scarce, too.
However. I found a clutch of eggs on the wall of the terrarium.
I should probably put it in the refrigerator...

gampsokleis ussuriensis and gampsokleis sedakova, these need to be included in the definition of straight-winged idti

05.02.2017 6:47, DanMar

Dan Mar, you have chosen the right time to go there, as the erect wings are still young and plentiful. Young tettigonias are kept in cereals, because they are not yet ripe and saturated with water. But in the second half of the summer, the blacksmith's fauna will become impoverished, jump and dectecus will simply "burn out", dry up from dehydration on these slopes along with the grass, only some tettigonia will remain, which will shift to the river lowlands in dense groves.
And what kind of mutant blacksmiths do you have that don't look classic in the old photos in the cages? Which are coffee-gray in color, larger and wider than albifrons? Marked like some kustolyubki-lesolyubki. Judging by their thin legs, they live like a viridissima. But they don't look like jump horses or tettigonians. I've never seen one like it.

It depends on what you're talking about... If short-winged then Anadrymadusa retowskii from the Crimea, or a similar inhabitant from under the stones of Jerusalem. The full-winged grasshopper was Drymadusa limbata, which seems to be the largest grasshopper in Europe with a subfamily. Tettigoniinae (decticus, tettigonii, gampsokleis, drimaduzi, kustolyuki, etc.), and if you do not count tolstunovs and dybok, then in general the largest in Europe. Then only experience appeared and the second season males at the age of larvae died. It is bred perfectly, of course not as easy as kustolyubki, but they came out of my cage tray, which was not even cooled. The Kemer region in Turkey is its homeland, but the species of this genus (there are only three of them) stretch from southern Greece and along the coast of Turkey from west to east. Collected in early April small larvae, then wanted to find again and could not (was in July in a slightly different place). Curiously, it is probably inhabited by shrubs and trees. Sandpapers sang louder than tettigonias.
Can you tell me if this is the same species of Sedakovs with different colors or two completely different similar subspecies?

Want! And from where? I agree with the previous definition.
I wonder how much they like the cold, and eggs like the cold, probably also need cooling...

In January, the larvae of the Turkish herbivore Parapholidoptera antalinae were released. A very massive amount, almost without cooling the soil, both from individual containers and from a common cage tray. 6-7 females and now 200 larvae are already running around in three cages, a lot of course will die quickly, many have already died.
Eupholidoptera also developed larvae.
Only four giant Orchamus fillies survived, with strange behavior: the filly freezes and stops crawling, but the abdomen moves. I thought that they were wintering, and I put 6 pieces on +5 +10, after which they died a week later, turning red and spoiling. In desperation, I transplanted the remaining ones into a cage with a plant, where for three weeks the filly also froze and sat on a twig and nothing happened to her, in the end she took and crawled away to eat. The strange thing is that in those parts it is now +5 degrees, but not as warm as in the apartment. But it was the apartment temperature that allowed us to survive. It seems that there are both males and females, but the aging of eggs was about 2 seasons, and it may be possible to bring them out. Fluffy, big ones will be.

Decided to re-contain one decticus, what else is needed?Do I need to remove beetles?

02.05.2017 18:23, Kolez

Buy yourself at least an aquarium, pave the bottom with peat soil and plant plants(clover for example, meadow grass of some kind )
There is not enough space in the jar and the air stagnates, your decticuses will die from mold or bite each other.

03.05.2017 5:18, ИНО

Useless-this child doesn't listen to reason. And then he'll wonder again why his decticuses will die. Last year we already had them.

maybe release them?will there be a terrarium and it will be possible to plant decticuses?where should I let them go so that the birds don't eat them?

03.05.2017 19:04, ИНО

Yes, Nikita, specifically in your case, it is definitely better to release it. Birds can eat everywhere, but for this they must first be seen. Therefore, it is necessary to release in the place of capture in tall grass, similar in color to the color of grasshoppers.

You can buy a large plastic container in the store for 15-20 liters with a lid, make a lot of small holes in it with an awl (thousands of holes). The cost of such a container and an aquarium, for example, is about the same, but the plastic container has a lid, and this is a huge plus. The aquarium doesn't have a lid. This is in the price range of 300-500re. Quite inexpensive. If you want, you can ask your parents or save up for lunch yourself.
Next, put a thin layer of turf with grass on the bottom. Really thin, 2-3cm, and not like your 10cm. Grass-for the beauty and naturalness of the grasshopper habitat. Moisten it very, very modestly, so that the grass is oppressed and does not perla strongly. Strong humidity is disastrous. Well, the blacksmiths and the grass need the sun.

04.05.2017 16:14, NIKITA TIMOSHEV

how many decticuses to contain, I will also shove akrid there and those that I brought with Kalininskaya, when I go fishing or on vacation, can I take a terarium with me?

05.05.2017 0:06, ИНО

It is better to immediately shove the cat there - the suffering of the unfortunate animals will end faster. And so, do not forget to take it out, go on vacation.

05.05.2017 9:13, NIKITA TIMOSHEV

I'll take the box and try to find the pins, and then when the terrarium is ready, I'll try to find all my decticuses that I released. They will bite the cat there.

05.05.2017 19:54, NIKITA TIMOSHEV

They'll die, it's not like decticus, but even dung worms will die in these cans. But the fact that the holes in the gooseberry punched-et progress, well done. And apparently still in the sun never put - otherwise they would have already been gone)) Make a frame of wood and cover it carefully with tulle with large holes, but without creases and creases, so that they don't get stuck - the best material for pens, breathable. (And an anti-mosquito synthetic grating is absolutely not suitable, blacksmiths live in it much less and get wet faster). Put sand or peat on the bottom and put fresh herbs in a jar of water next to it. At night-take out in the cold to sleep(biorhythm), and spray in the morning. And during the day, remove it from direct sun(if soit is not at the open window). And.... cold cold cold at night is the most important factor. Then they will survive until the new year at least in one stage of imago. Verified!(decticus, cantans, viridissima) Cages - a minimum of synthetics (wood, tulle) gauze is also impossible-it passes oxygen poorly.

If I keep the larvae, they will pass through the holes in the tulle and escape.

07.05.2017 3:00, GrigorY66

Will not pass,,, if on the third or fourth molt. And nefig drisnya pervolichinochnuyu catch! Let them at least pass a couple of molts in the wild, get stronger in the sun. Females, by the way, take root worse in captivity, especially when they are adults. And it is better to catch short-winged forms, it will be easier for beginners to keep them.
More information for those interested:
In general, I repeat - a large cage, large tulle-stretched without folds, moist soil with small grasses cut out in a form from the place of capture, spraying 2 times a day and a cool place at night. That's all, there are no other options for the safe maintenance of greys and albifrons And WILL NEVER BE !!!..., well, if only artificial grasshoppers.
I wanted to attach a photo, so I haven't collected the cages yet - I'm too lazy.....as dismantled at the end of January, and lying around. Soon the Ussurians and Sedakovs will grow up, I'll transfer them from boxes to cages, maybe I'll take a picture of the structure. (these species are shown in the photo above, their eggs were collected in September on bumps, in the swamp of the south.Yakutia, where I photographed autumn old men) .
I won't keep the gray ones this year, I'm tired of them. The last Caucasian decticus I had was in the 20th of January of this year. Hatched in March last year, eggs collected in December 2015 in Ingushetia, incubated diapause 2 months in a stump in the park.

09.05.2017 22:39, Kolez

It would be interesting to listen to the chatter of Sedakovs. No matter how much I Googled it,I never managed to find someone to film or record it.

10.05.2017 2:18, GrigorY66

Peculiar. First jerky scrapers, then growths and trills.

19.05.2017 17:14, NIKITA TIMOSHEV

I keep again a green decticus female one, I will give fillies (the size of a grain of rice), jumps and cucumbers. Then they will buy a plastic terrarium(or make a cage)I'll cram another 6 decticuses and 2 albifrons.

19.05.2017 23:05, ИНО

Obviously, Nikita is a fan of "Mortal Kombat", and also-an absolutely deaf subject to the advice of experienced people. The main question is: why, in this case, does he always ask them?

Nikita, you've got some kind of bird-phobia. Did you watch Hitchcock at night? No one will reach the imago in your bank (if it is there alone, then due to lack of space, it sheds crookedly and will soon die, if there are several, then I will devour the shedding ones without fail). That is, if in nature there is a certain probability of death (from predators), then in your chokehold it is 100%. Did the experience of last year teach you nothing?

22.05.2017 2:16, GrigorY66

Listen, you blacksmith troll! You're wrong... This all comes with time, and to learn their structure of life-you need many years of content practice, not forums, because this is a completely different world from cats, dogs and hamsters, and 99% of people will not immediately understand this.
My first cantans in the 80's generally lived no more than 4 hours, or died in a car accident in a model Ferrari, falling off the table, or from a long bath in the bathroom with soap suds, like bordered beetles. And only after 7 years they lived for more than a day, in a tightly closed jar of oil, in which they were cooked alive in the morning in the sun on the windowsill. If our boy does not lose this interest with age , then he will definitely bring his hobby to perfection. And these ancient uncomplicated jumping pioneers of our planet will delight the eye and ear for many months to come. Their structure of life is humidity and temperature, and in the future you can come up with your own tricks, with early hatching from eggs or stopping the development of a nymph (described somewhere above). It is necessary to understand what they gravitate to, what they live for, and what causes their natural death.
Hand-feeding is familiar. I feed the old ones with straws. They can't catch a babbler (you can't catch a blue fly), so I stick it on a straw or broom and gently hold out the tentacle bod to it - it immediately grabs it, or reluctantly takes it. Depends on their current health and age.
Example:
-1)Old viridissima dies of dehydration after a hot summer in September, in the lower layers of leaves in a maple forest plantation in Ukraine
-2)An old female contance in October in the Leningrad region gets wet in an icy rain on the edge of an aspen forest, under a leaf of a matimachikha and has been waiting for at least one ray of sun for a week...
-3)So give these species what they lack, but in moderation and with a smooth temperature transition. Then you will feed them fresh dandelions in April))
-4)The blackened mucosa of the suckers of the paws is restored, the blackened retina of the eyes is restored, the spots from the abdomen go away and disappear, but the dried edges of the wings cannot be restored, although we will see...

22.05.2017 3:59, ИНО

22.05.2017 6:00, alex017

One time was always enough for me to understand that several plavuntsy, leeches, larvae of water lovers and plavuntsy, a dozen grasshoppers should not be kept together (just do not think that I kept leeches and grasshoppers together).
The larger the terrarium, the longer the life span of grasshoppers.
However, 3L bank is not so bad. I kept and in a smaller volume of 1 pc/1l approximately, but individually.
The ground in it is superfluous except that...
I noticed a long time ago that the reason for the death of grasshoppers in Perm is the autumn (August) cold snap and prolonged rains. If the summer is dry and continues in September, then they live until October in nature. But more often at the end of August it is not so easy to find places, you need to know the places.
