I caught the first non-wintering mace butterfly this year. Male Celastrina argiolus was caught in the Ivanovo region, 10 km south of Ivanovo.
To be honest, I was a little surprised, I thought that I would meet some white women before everyone else. I haven't even seen them yet.
A couple of photos from the scene of the capture of golubyanka. Such "autumn" landscapes on April 26.

Hi everybody. I am publishing my first report in this topic. Today I walked through the city park for the purpose of photo hunting at least for some butterflies, although most of all I wanted to take pictures of Zorka. At the entrance to the park, I immediately noticed polyxena, who at first disappeared from sight, but then I found her.

IMG_2027.jpg

Moving on. I see a lot of thickets of flowering celandine, but there are no butterflies on it, they probably don't like celandine.

IMG_2063.jpg

After a long run for dawns, I finally managed to take a few series of photos, but so far they are not very clear.

IMG_2072.jpgIMG_2110.jpg

Then I went to a clearing under a power line. I found a lot of polyxene.

IMG_2117.jpg

The most interesting thing is that I saw one polyxena attack another and they fell together in the grass. I still don't understand: this is how they mate or fight. Here's what I managed to capture here:

IMG_2122.jpgIMG_2123.jpgIMG_2124.jpgIMG_2125.jpg

Polyxene egg:

IMG_2176.jpg

Then I went to the Kakhov reservoir. Many such winged insects were found on the flowering bush:

IMG_2244.jpgIMG_2248.jpgIMG_2260.jpgIMG_2264.jpg

Overall, I'm happy with the trip.
Interestingly , a year ago (more precisely, 23.04.2011) there were no polixenes at all, but there were swallowtails. And today-not a single swallowtail.

April 27-28, Medynsky district, Kaluga regionI finished work at 13-30,the family gathered and went.Walk in the woods, and in the evening catch the light. The target is female endromis.Everything flies in the snow, whiteflies and pigeons have appeared.Caught in years of dung beetle, gravedigger, a lot of springbirds of 2 types, mournbirds fly, but not for the collection, the color of the wings is not the same-faded over time, on the edge of the endromis fly freely, females differ in size and flight.I went with my daughter, went to the old skidding road, Dad look at what little beetles I have in the net???I look-and these are ticks!!!!20 pieces!!!!I looked closely-ticks are sitting everywhere at the ends of the grass,I looked at about 15 pieces, it's dark on it....I've never seen anything like it.Along the road was full of moose droppings, since winter, apparently we were the first to go on this road, did not go any further, carefully returned back, my mother listened to us, made a full check of everything and prepared for night fishing.I lit the lamps at 21-30,the first female flopped at 22-00, the daytime temperature was 24C, at 21-30 12C, at 24-00 5C.While the lamps were burning, I ran along the roads with a lantern, there were a lot of granulatuses, 1 cancatus, 1 in my opinion menetriyoshi, and finally I got large and brightly colored nemoralis 4 pcs.A water lover,6 females of endromis, half fat, half cowhide, flew to the light, died in 24-10 years at a temperature of 4C.For Viktor-right in the city glasses-a constant lookout. And I think-glasses for zhuzhla, really catch, but nemoralis?--it's like catching a trophy catfish on the Volga river with hundreds of hooks, it will be caught, but there is no high and adrenaline.!!

Did I understand correctly – in the afternoon, endromises fly along the edge of the forest, and females too?

Not well, endromis also flies in the afternoon (of course, not in the evening). I haven't seen any females in flight during the day, but they have to throw off their eggs - so they fly.

For A. Y. Elez, males flew along the edges, 3-6 meters from the ground, females flew between birches, and flew into the forest in the wind, 10-15m from the ground. From 15-30 until nightfall, the females repeatedly flew in different directions. The first female sat down in a tree not far from where the screen was installed and simply fell from the tree onto the screen.I saw groups of females on birch branches at a height of 10-15 meters from the ground.

Could they have been confused at this distance, could they have been groups of males gathered around a female? I don't see why the females need to get together." The one that fell on the screen does not cause any questions. But on a flight at such a high altitude, especially closer to dusk, you can get mixed up. Or did you definitely see the females?
In mid-April, unlike in the previous spring, we decided to drive not to the south of the Lower Volga, but on the contrary-to the north, to the border with the Saratov region, and look for something that has not yet been found in the Volgograd region. First of all, Endromis versicolora, which theoretically could be found. And finally, to catch the imago of thorn Saturnia (so far it was only possible to deduce). The Guselsko-Teterevyatsky ridge in the Zhirnovsky district was chosen as the base.

During the day, Tentyria nomas, two or three Harpalus species crawled along the paths en masse, and Tropinota flew en masse (I don't write hirta, because it looks like we don't have hirta at all). The Meloe tuccius T-shirt was discovered for the first time in the region.
[attachmentid()=138954]

Let me clarify that the photo does not show Meloe (Coelomeloe) tuccius Rossi, but another species - M. (Meloegonius) rufiventris (Germar, 1832) (= coriarius Brandt & Erichs.)
And what is the Tropinota there?

May 29, Bryansk region, Mylinka station.
It's a hot day and the insects are very active. Dawns fly, clouds of raspberries, buckthorn pigeons, mottled wings. I met a swallowtail, already beaten.
Tau were pleased, so many, but most of them were battered. I managed to catch five fresh ones. Quite a lot of these black caterpillars, aren't they mnemosyne?

Yesterday I went to the Gavrilov-Yama district together with our butterfly farmer Max to explore the valley of the Lakhosti and Kotorosli rivers at the Lakhosti confluence. Already in the morning, the weather began to deteriorate, a strong north wind was blowing, and it was rapidly getting colder if at 8 00 it was +13, then by 18 00 it was +8... As soon as we arrived at the place, a heavy rain was added to the wind, but "we had..." (meaning "fuel for the cloud dispersal station"). Therefore, after having a snack and adjusting the weather (as it turned out later, it was only enough to adjust the health of the weather until 16 o'clock), we began an intensive collection of insects along the banks of overflowing rivers. It was not clear where the water was flowing, but judging by the garbage, the water fell a little (10-15 cm) from the maximum level. Insects (mainly beetles) were inactive due to the cold and wind. Most of them were collected from under the bark of trees standing near the water and in dead wood. there was everything: ladybirds, leaf-eaters, tarsiers... There were practically no butterflies (a few depressariids and springbirds).
As a result, I collected more than 60 species of beetles: many small ground beetles and staphylins, various ladybirds, willow leaf beetles and weevils (mowing), the rest of the families are 13 species each. The material has not yet been analyzed, so the species composition is not given. Mostly ordinary species, from interesting ones: Nicrophorus humator (on the corpse of a cat) and a ladybug-presumably Coccinella distincta. Unfortunately, it was not possible to enter the forest - it is swampy, the water is knee-deep and higher. Realizing that the weather could not be adjusted, they called transport and went home...

I look at the Moscow-Moscow region reports, and I understand that the Kostroma region is somehow depressing. For the second year since early spring, there is no such abundance that is presented in the reports of Muscovites. Caught on April 27 on a split drl 250, one female endromis, a sea of scoops, and even small scoops of type 4 and the same number of moths. Lanestris, I think there will be no more, the biotope is a peat swamp with manes overgrown with birch, pine, alder, willow, near a mixed forest area, very sharply cold, compared to the city. Sad as it is, absolutely.

On the first weekend of May (April 29-May 1) I went back to nature, to my familiar places (Shuisky district, the village of Krasnoarmeyskoye).
On the first day, April 29, I had business in the city, so I didn't arrive in the village until late in the evening. During the day, of course, it was not possible to go anywhere. I don't think I missed much from this, because the day was frankly so-so: although warm, but cloudy, rainy, and in the evening a strong wind blew. A thunderstorm thundered in the distance, but it never reached the village. The wind, however, soon weakened greatly and did not interfere much with fishing in the light. On the night of April 29-30, it was overcast, with occasional light rain. His age was average: not very bad, but not too good either. The usual spring species flew: scoops (Orthosia incerta, gothica, populeti, gracilis, cerasi, cruda, miniosa, Anorthoa munda, Panolis flammea, Cerastis rubricosa, leucographa, Eupsilia transversa, Conistra vaccinii, rubiginea, Xylena vetusta, Brachionycha nubeculosa), moths (Biston stratarius, Lycia hirtaria, pomonaria, Apocheima pilosaria Agriopis marginaria, Cleora cinctaria, Trichopteryx polycommata, Trichopteryx carpinata and one Aethalura punctulata), as well as from other families Achlya flavicornis and Endromis versicolora. Many of the scoops and moths that arrived were already stale: worn, and often completely stripped. Only Agonopterix sp.was found among the micro-lepidoptera.

On the second day, April 30, I took a walking tour along the route Krasnoarmeyskoye village-Sergeevo village-Kleshchevka village. The day turned out to be a bad one mainly because of the bad weather: it was cold, a strong wind was blowing, and in the middle of the day it began to rain altogether. The main goal of the current visit to the village - the capture of Callophrys rubi and Celastrina argiolus pigeons-remained unfulfilled on this day. All they managed to catch were two half-killed females, Archiearis parthenias and Archiearis notha. The only luck on this day I think was finding a female Endromis versicolora sitting on a birch branch.

The night of April 30-May 1 was unsuccessful. It was clear, the weather was cold and windy. All the same species of scoops and moth flew as on the previous night, but in smaller numbers. No Endromises arrived.

P1150167.JPG

On the afternoon of the third day, May 1, I thought for a long time about the bad weather of the previous day: should I go out somewhere, or should I return to Ivanovo immediately in the morning? However, after standing in the yard, assessing the weather, I still decided to go out into the field. And, as it turned out, not in vain. The weather was much better than on the previous day: warm, the wind was blowing, but not so strong and warmer, the sun often peeked out. I decided to take a walk in the direction of the village of Polki, walked through the forest along the bank of a small forest river Granddaughter to the place of its confluence with the river Teza. There were a lot more butterflies than on the previous day. There were butterflies that lived out their time and overwintered, including mourning birds, and there were also butterflies that did not winter this year. First, the spring pigeons Celastrina argiolus flew en masse, 15 males and five females were collected. And interestingly, some of the males were already worn, as if they had been flying for quite some time. Secondly, the Callophrys rubi raspberries flew, five males and one female were collected, all the freshest specimens. And third, on a forest road, I met the variegated moth Araschnia levana, but failed to catch it. In addition, he caught one specimen of the moth Paradarisa consonaria and Aethalura punctulata. In general, the main goal of the trip - the capture of spring pigeons Celastrina argiolus and Callophrys rubi - was fulfilled.

Dosang Report 2012 (29.04-06.05)
This year, even before the trip to the south of Russia, it was clear that the Saturnia spini were flying away, but there were still "ticks" that I wanted to put: normal piri, female Geb and desert, dwarf hawkmoth and sea buckthorn. Almost everything planned was implemented. The exception was the desert females, but we didn't do anything to catch them – we didn't stop at the place where we caught males, we went to bed early, and so on. Now in order. First stop on the Ilovlya River. In the mass of midges and mosquitoes, plus 15 hours behind the wheel, in general caught somewhere up to 12 and went to bed. Almost nothing interesting flew – tremulifolia (even a female), anceps in quantity, female tritophus, male Hebe, well, scoops with moths. In the morning on Ilovla fished a little day, from an unusual pile of flying zegrisov, erat, plus caught a flying female Hebe.
On the evening of April 30, we arrived in Dosang, where the weather was warm and calm. We were a little late with the camp and dinner, as a result, we switched to the screen somewhere at half past 11 pm. Around the lamp was a cloud of different butterflies, until they came to their senses exactly at 23.00 a hurricane-force wind blew, demolished the screen and butterflies. I just had to remember that I was going to take it off for myself. The next two nights were not only cool (plus 8 at 24.00), but also accompanied by wind with a speed of about 25 m / s. In the next two nights, the wind subsided and the temperature began to grow, on the last night from 4 to 5 May, the night temperature reached plus 13 degrees. This had a noticeable effect on the summer – if in the previous two nights exactly 4 villikas came, then in the last one they flew in a mass; plus 3 sea-buckthorn hawkmoth flew, katokalina went.
Last night, on the way back to Moscow, I still wanted to take desert and pygmy hawkmoth, so we caught them near Ilovlya, inside gullies with chalk deposits. Located. In the evening, we fished for jacobi, fed the midges and mosquitoes, and settled down at the screen. The whole trip was very much hindered by a huge lantern in the sky-fishing in the full moon is the most disgusting thing. The moon was particularly large that night. It hung directly over the hill and illuminated all the beams. There was also a fairly decent wind blowing all night. At dusk, endromis and proserpine arrived; onion sharpeners and a standard set of hawkmoth. Mishka read an article about dwarfs, that they fly at dusk, so there was no special hope when the first one came at the beginning of the first night and then a total of 19 pieces came with an interval of 5 minutes, it was May 5. Along the way, the Jacobis came. In the morning, they were still fishing for checkers in the beam. In general, we went normally, although the weather was not very lucky and there were not many butterflies, I shot almost everything that was on the screen. Almost the entire plan was implemented.
There is nothing much to say about beetles, a lot of skorobeevs, who were told not to take them, crunchers, riders, a couple of types of barbels on a thorn in the desert, a horse on the sand and a second horse at night in the light, beauties in the light, and so on. Other details and full-scale photos of Mishka.
Yes, we also went fishing, if you can call it fishing. In general, without straining, the 40-liter tank was mostly filled with a roach.
HAPPY VICTORY DAY TO ALL!

past holidays in Staraya Ryazan, Ryazan region, dacha on the bank of the Oka River.

I successfully caught the DRV-250 for two days: on May 5 and 8. 6 and 7 the weather at night was disgusting, strong wind, butterflies were blown away from the screen smile.gif
A lot of interesting things arrived. First, new views for me:

Drymonia ruficornis
Peridea anceps
Acasis viretata
Phibalapteryx virgata-many
Plagodis dolabraria - very many
Selenia lunularia - few males
Watsonalla binaria - 3 different-sex specimens.
Epatolmis caesarea - 1 pc. May 8

Now what I photographed from the usual views.
Cleora cinctaria
Epirrhoe alternata
Hypoxystis pluviaria
Lobophora halterata
Lomographa bimaculata
Lycia hirtaria
Macaria notata
Pseudopanthera macularia
Selenia tetralunaria
Xanthorhoe biriviata
and three other unidentified species of Jupitecia

Acronicta auricoma
Acronicta psi либо tridens
Acronicta rumicis
Anorthoa munda
Autographa gamma
Colocasia coryli
Egira conspicillaris
Hypena rostralis
Lacanobia w-latinum
Orthosia ?cerasi
Orthosia incerta
Panolis flammea - already heavily flown
Orthosia gothica - also old ladies

Clostera anastomosis
Clostera curtula
Notodonta dromedarius
Notodonta torva
Notodonta tritophus
Notodonta ziczac
Pterostoma palpina

Hyles gallii
Drepana falcataria
Earias clorana
Phragmatobia fuliginosa

from micra-Ethmia bipunctella and something else undefined, but a little.

during the day, a fairly standard set of whiteflies and nymphalids flew: napi, rhamni, levana, io, lathonia, many swallowtails, Pyrgus malvae

Zerynthia polyxena fluttered right on the plot and under it, closer to the shore, some even laid eggs on the kirkazon - so life goes on! smile.gif

Other details and full-scale photos of Mishka.
Yes, we also went fishing, if you can call it fishing. In general, without straining, the 40-liter tank was mostly filled with a roach.
HAPPY VICTORY DAY TO ALL!

Just sketches:
1. we were extremely surprised by the simultaneous summer festiva and villica in Dosang, and most of the villages are flown. Near Volgograd, there is a festiva, but villica is not yet;
2. as in the year before last, a massive invasion of male festiva was observed at the Lukoil gas station near Vityutnev, since Archedinsky Sands are nearby. But on the way back, these butterflies abruptly disappeared, so if in Dosang they flew with all their might, then near Volgograd the next night none of them arrived and there were no corpses at the gas station either.
3. in Dosang, S. pyri lives in large numbers, and, apparently, eats not fruit trees, but small-leaved elm (elm) in the forest belt. Males find the female immediately after leaving the cocoon, and even during the day. At first, broken and already empty females fly to the light, then fresh females, and after 01:00 males begin to arrive. Since the butterflies are heavy and weakened by laying eggs, and the nights were cold, they do not so much arrive as crawl. The forest belt is literally moving...
4. the life cycle of the female S. pyri fits into one day: hatched-mated(3-4 hours) - laid eggs (5-6 hours after mating) - everything, you can die. But the female still flies after laying eggs for some reason... By the way, the eggs were brought, in the amount of about 100 pieces, and what to do with them now?
5. in Dosang, both ordinary and long-eared hedgehogs came to visit. Among the snakes, we met a common snake (including a melanist) and a water snake, as well as a steppe viper. The latter, it seems, is not uncommon in the steppe. On Ilovla I chased some small snake on the chalk, but I didn't have time to really see it, it went into the rocks.
6. we were surprised by the capture of Zorka-zegris on Ilovla. It's a bit too northerly. It was also in Dosang, but it was already badly flown.
7. they tried to understand what kind of yolks fly in the steppe near Dosang. Unfortunately, almost all of them were already badly broken. They still didn't understand. especially after I caught the orange one... Erata was definitely there, but Hale / alfakariensis-the devil knows, we need to straighten them out.
8. fish in Akhtuba was caught so-so because of the sharp rise of water, strong wind and small size. Actually, it wasn't a problem to catch a small one, but it was necessary to rest on a large one, which somehow I didn't want smile.gifto do especially after sleepless nights.
9. as Sergey already wrote, the nights for fishing were disgusting because of the cold, wind and the approaching full moon.
10. years under Dosang went every night on the same schedule: milkweed and other feeding hawkmoth (what they, imago, eat there, I don't know)- broken piri females-fresh piri females-dippers-willies-dippers-hera-piri males. Then you can safely go to bed. All this was interspersed with small katokalins, a few scoops and moths. Sometimes male and female urtica bears arrived. Depending on the temperature, the number of forks changed, and the rest were still stuck in a jamb. On the last night, freshly hatched sea-buckthorn hawkmoth came (silver loch grows there). Unlike last year (the same days of May), there was not a single linear (H. livornica) hawk moth, apparently, last year there was a mass flight.
11. A. festiva was caught out of sporting interest, because in previous years they had already eaten enough. They tried to catch the females in the light, but failed. They searched for females during the day, but found them only on Ilovla, although in Dosang the males perled dur. Among the males, they searched for color aberrations, they wanted to catch them with completely black and completely white upper wings - they managed only in a rough approximation. We looked for variations of the pattern: with a dot in the center of the upper wing or with a curl. In general, we had fun smile.gif
12. night in the steppe on Ilovla pleased, of course, hawk moth-gorgons. They fly very low above the ground, fall on the bottom sheet, and spin around like upside-down flies. Funny. They really wanted them, but they doubted it. that they will fly in early May. Quite a lot of Jacobi bears came to the light (they were also caught during the day). I was surprised by the arrival of a fresh male endromis, given the report of colleagues who caught them in those places on April 14...
13. Yes, they caught all the time on two generators, a split DRL-250 (Osram) at the top and a non-split DRL-250 (Philipps) above the screen. The Romyald-a design didn't survive the wind test weep.gif
13. From Volgograd, I went to a dacha near Kasimov (Ryazan region), there was only one decent night. The forest is very humid and it was problematic to get on the usual gas pipeline, so I caught it right in the yard. A lot of common scoops, a few moth flies, a standard set of seasonal tufts, lunar copra, water-loving beetles, a male endromis, a pair of S. pavonia (one was taken for small size) and one male cocoonworm-tremulifolia. In the afternoon, a full set of diaries, but served and not yet flown (lilac did not bloom).
14. On May 9, on my way home, I wanted to pick up A. tau at the PTZ, but I didn't have time for it and went to the myrmidon nursery (Nerskaya), where I successfully caught 8 males in an hour.
16. Finally, a list of species composition of SPHINGIDAE and
Sphingidae caught:
Deilephila elpenor (isolated in Dosang)
Deilephila porcellus (in Dosang only the suellus form, in Ilovla-both forms)
Hyles euphorbiae (in the mass, one specimen resembles H. zygophylli in color, if I'm not mistaken, we looked at the French book with Sergey)
Hyles gallii (isolated)
Hyles hippophaes (3 pieces in Dosang)
Proserpinus proserpina (1 on Ilovla)
Laothoe populi (singular in Dosang, subspecies?)
Smerinthus ocellatus (1 VERY shabby in Dosang, 1 female in Ilovla)
Sphinx pinastri (1 in Ilovla)
Sphingonaepiopsis gorgoniades (19 on Ilovla)

ARCTIIDAE:
Arctia festiva (en masse, 2 females)
Epicallia villica (mass produced)
Phragmatobia fuliginosa (isolated)
Spilosoma urticae (isolated, males and females)
Tyria jacobaeae (a lot on Ilovla)
Diaphora mendica (1 female in Ilovla)

Pontia edusa.

Saturnia pavonia.

Lythria cruentaria.

Odontosia carmelita.
