Hello everyone
I want to make my own five kopecks in the reports, no matter how I live in Kazakhstan tongue.gif
Summer this year is good, warm and sunny since June. However, the steppe has already withered. I continue collecting glitter wasps and other insects in the nearest steppe. I caught a lot of interesting things for myself, in particular I dreamed about Stilbum calens and here it is.
There is also something interesting about butterflies. This year I caught Rhyparia purpurata, I'm trying to breed the second generation without wintering. Last year, it was possible to get Hyphoraia aulica hatchlings. These bears are not frequent here.

There is probably no lepidopteran lover who, after learning about such places as the Tien Shan and the Pamirs and the species that are found there, would not want to visit there someday. Another thing is that some people do not even dream about it, while for others it is a long-passed milestone that does not cause much enthusiasm and interest. Having read the book "in search of Apollo" at the age of 10, I probably belonged to the first category. But I grew up, traveled a little, looked around and decided, why not?!
After looking through a few books last winter, the Zailiysky Alatau, Kazakhstan, was chosen as the landing point. Chimbulak ski Resort. So to speak – the simplest beginning. The target is 6 local Apollons: patricius, boedromius, delphius, actius, Apollonius, and tianschanicus. The complexity of the find was presented to me before the trip in this order.
It was decided to get to Almaty by plane from Yekaterinburg with a transfer in Astana. Departure on 1.07.2017. The airline Air Astana turned out to be very similar to our Aeroflot, we flew quickly and comfortably. At the airport, we were met by a driver from Chimbulak, where special ecological cars are only allowed to run on gas)). Very funny, considering that later we saw piles of trucks and construction equipment and mountains of garbage on the edges of the forest. Well, okay, we got through Almaty in about 40 minutes. The city itself made a good impression. But in the mountains, I immediately noticed a" completely fallen " forest, they say there was a hurricane here a couple of years ago. It's an eerie sight. Checked in in the evening. In general, the accommodation in Chimbulak is more than comfortable, even through the chur!

Morning of July 2. Day1. We decided to start without straining and take the cable car up to Talgarsokgo pass, and then go to the pass itself and see how it goes. And then a surprise was waiting for us! It turned out that on July 2, Kazakhs rushed to the pass in honor of the upcoming birthday of the president. In this regard, we have organized free delivery to all comers from Almaty and a free cable car. Therefore, the pass was crowded with people under 500, or even 1000. Well, we went, tourists....

picture: 1__9_.jpg
picture: 1__7_.jpg
picture: 1__8_.jpg

The starting point from the cable car is 3200m, so we immediately found ourselves almost in the subnival belt. The first to fly from all sides chernushki and mother-of-pearl, after 5 minutes of lifting appeared and the first Parnassus, I certainly did not immediately realize what kind of species, nimble small, white. As it turned out later – Sea Anemones! There were quite a few of them. The ascent of the pass was not very difficult, there were a lot of people at first, but the further you went, the fewer people there were.

When we reached the top, we decided to turn off the main route, which led to the left to Panorama and Furmanovka, and go down the rocks to the zone of alpine meadows. Here, on the rocky slope, I came across the first delphius, which I immediately recognized. The descent on the rocks was steep, a couple of times I even checked the strength of my 5th point.

Below, alpine meadows opened up. Beautiful endless expanses of flowers and herbs. But alas, by this time the mountains were already heavily covered by clouds. I still managed to catch up with one Apollo, it turned out to be a beaten Mnemosyne – well, that's the beginning!

picture: 1__17_.jpg
picture: 1__18_.jpg
picture: 1__19_.jpg
picture: 2__1_.jpg

We began to circle the slope from the east at an altitude of about 3000 meters. Erebia mopsos, Clossiana erubescens, Cupido buddhista flew out of the grass. The slope turned smoothly and turned south. The sun came out for a couple of minutes. Then a rather large Apollo shot out from under my feet. The wind blows them away fast and far, but I still caught up with him. Tianshanikus, another one in a couple of minutes! It became a little more fun. If the sun has not appeared again, and if it is not there, then there are no Apollos, they do not even get scared, they hide in the rocks and turn off. I came across the only Oeneis hora. The path around the mountain turned out to be quite long and unpleasant, as my feet kept sliding down the grass, climbing for a total of 5 hours.

picture: 1__3_.jpg
picture: 1__4_.jpg
picture: 1__1_.jpg
picture: 1__20_.jpg
picture: 2__5_.jpg
picture: 2__6_.jpg

In general, the first day turned out to be blurred by the weather and a lot of people, although Kazakhs are mostly very friendly and pleasant people. But it is clear that 3 of the 6 Apollos are here. In the evening, we eat enough and immediately go to bed.

To be continued

Despite the presence of Actiuses, Delphiuses and Tienshanikus on the Talgar Pass, it was decided to continue exploring, change direction and go in the other direction – the Mynzhilki Gorge and then, if you have enough strength, to the mountain puddle called Lake No. 6. Here the heights are under 3500 and I hoped to see Patricius and Boedromius. We leave at 8: 00.

picture: 1__4_.jpg
1__5_.jpg
picture: 1__6_.jpg
picture: 1__7_.jpg
picture: 1__8_.jpg
picture: 1__9_.jpg
picture: 1__1_.jpg

Along the way, you can already meet the same Erebia mopsos and Clossiana erubescens, in addition to them all sorts of banal things like lemongrass, cabbage, urticaria, peacock eyes, etc. We approach the weather station and here Delphius sweeps along the slope by the road. We pass the weather station and start climbing the path to the hill.

picture: 1__10_.jpg
picture: 1__15_.jpg

The mountains are separated from top to bottom by a rocky gully. What is flying here, a lot of things-and all this mass appeared sharply right on one slope. Heaps of Delphi, Oeneis hora, Coenonympha sunbecca, the same Erebia mopsos and Clossiana erubescens, Boloria generator and several types of checkers were added to them. Above, Chazara enervata and Polycaena tamerlana are added to this set.

Despite all the variety, we do not stop here for a long time, we are moving up, because the clouds are already gathering, and I want to see what is up there beyond the 3400 mark... We are climbing under the constant attacks of Delphi)) the grassy slopes at an altitude of 3400 will give way to a dead valley. There are no flowers and almost no herbs. Only rocks. And among these stones.... Only rare urticaria. Once in 15 minutes, Delphi fly by, it is very difficult to catch them here, you will not run over the stones. Of course, I am gnawing doubts, and not whether these are Patricians, but it is impossible to check reliably.

Heading to the lake. There is also peace and quiet.

picture: 1__13_.jpg
picture: 1__14_.jpg

I decide to go back down for the Delphiuses. I descend from the lake by another path along the southern steep scree leading to heights over 3800. And then a small, light, slightly transparent butterfly flies out from under my feet. Very fast and energetic flight. Makes a circle and sits on the rocks about 4 meters above the scree. As I climb, the noise of my movement seems to reverberate through the valley. From afar, it is difficult to see the details, sitting on a rock with its wings spread out to the sun. This is boedromius. Sneaking up on the attack distance does not work and he again makes a circle, this time sitting down a little lower, but among the wall of stones. I'm trying to get in again, but I can't, I'm very shy. It flies up the scree. Something went off the scale in my head and I started climbing up the scree like a dazed man. And only after 5-7 minutes, after breaking a considerable piece of rock, looking around and realizing that I can't just climb up, and if I'm lucky, then how to catch it is not very clear, I decide to retreat. Somehow slid down, feeling like on a snowboard!

picture: 1__18_.jpg
picture: 1__11_.jpg
picture: 1__19_.jpg

Wandered on the rocks under the scree, there is only a lonely Delphius, I saw him yes, it's not Patricius ((. Okay, this is only the second day, if that I will return here. I'm going down. I manage to catch the last 15 minutes of sun in the Delphius Valley, it was a very busy 15 minutes!)

1__2_.jpg
1__3_.jpg

Well, the second day isn't as bad as the first. And if on the first night I was sorry about missing Delphius, now all my thoughts are about how to get Femromius.

I continue my story about my first trip to the Tien Shan.
Day 3. As it was a quiet weekday, most of the people came down from the mountains. So it's time to return to the Talgar Pass for Aktius. We move out early in the morning. We are the first to enter the pass.
The same set is still flying as on the first day. Attempts to catch up with Actius on the move do not bring success, the slopes are very steep, and for some reason I do not get up and down as quickly as the Apollons. After several failed attempts, I decide to move higher. At the very top, there are much more Apollons and they behave a little more calmly here, although it is still difficult to call it calm behavior))) . Running after them in most cases is useless, the best way is to find a good place and sit in ambush. So I did, probably sat for an hour and a half with varying success.

1__1_.jpg

In addition to Actius, females of Tienshanicus and males of Delphius sometimes climb up from the opposite rocky slope. At 12: 00, it was decided to continue to the panorama and go down to Medeo via Furmanovka. The descent from the first part of the Talgar pass is quite steep, over rocks, but not as dangerous as on the first day off-road.

1__2_.jpg

Every now and then the Delphi fly out from under my feet and fly away. Then we move along the top of the ridge, which sometimes turns into rocky mountain valleys. There are not so many Apollons here, but all the same 3 species. Occasionally scurry Pontia callidicae and Chazara enervata.

1__3_.jpg
1__4_.jpg
1__17_.jpg
1__5_.jpg
1__6_.jpg

Closer to Furmanovka, the area of alpine meadows reaches the peaks along which we are moving, and here, on a small patch of flower peak, Boloria generator and small amounts of Erebia radias fly in a mass. At the top of Furmanovka there are a lot of checkers.

1__7_.jpg
1__8_.jpg
1__9_.jpg

Then the descent begins, and we meet a lot of good-natured Kazakh tourists, mostly young people. Butterflies become scarce despite the abundance of flowers and greenery.

1__10_.jpg
1__11_.jpg

At an altitude of approximately 2300 meters, we turn into the forest. The path leads to a steep southern slope. A very interesting picture opens up, the slope is densely covered with tall bushes and large apollons soar directly above it. They look for open places with yellow flowers of cleaning agent. These are Parnassius Apollo and tianschanicus. Maculinea alcon and Coenonympha sunbecca appear. We descend even lower, here for the first time a section of the mountain steppe, and everything is literally teeming with Parnassius Apollo, Erebia turanica, Polyommatus persephatta, a lot of Maculinea alcon, occasionally Melanargia parce and Aporia leucodice appear, the road goes to the bottom of the settled slope and goes along the river. Gradually, the slope along the road turns into a cliff and the Apollo mountains fall out like a waterfall along this cliff. In one place, where willow-tea grew under this cliff, a couple of dozen swirled on it at once, just like bees, and among them I came across a couple of large Tianchanicus, not at all the same as they were above. Apparently this is a hybrid with Apollo! Fresh Fabriciana adippe flew through the puddles, and Leminites helmanni was caught living out its last days. In general, the belt at an altitude of 2000 m was very rich and diverse in lepidoptera.

1__16_.jpg
2.jpg
1__15_.jpg
1__14_.jpg
1__13_.jpg

Then down to Medeo.

1__12_.jpg

The total route on this day was 16 km, we went up to 3400 and down to 1700.
The joy of what we saw more than covered our fatigue, and the next day we decided on an even longer and more promising route.

In the coming season, I managed to participate in two major expeditions:

1. South Kazakhstan (June) with Finnish colleagues. The expedition was very rich, I learned a lot of new things and I am very happy about it.

2. Kyrgyzstan - Tajikistan (July) with Russian colleagues. We were walking in two cars. The expedition was held under the meme "we went to Tajikistan for bread", but this did not upset us - the Kyrgyz part of the expedition exceeded all expectations, not a single rainy night - and as a result, very rich night collections (I have 8 liters of material).

Well , yes, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan are calling words and places coveted by almost every entomologist ... So what?!!! Overall, the report is impressive! The trip was a SUCCESS!

It was successful.

The story may be born one day. When I have at least a little time to give birth to him.

To fill up the forum with hundreds of photos of the same mountain from angles that differ by 2 degrees-sorry, sir, it's bad manners, so a couple of landscapes will suffice. Google will show you everything else if you want.

Tien Shan-continued.

Day 4 or fasting day) We decided to take a little break from walking on the rocky slopes and go to the Big Almaty Lake. At first I had the idea to land on the way and look for Apollonius, but looking at what is flying in the mountains, I thought that Apollonius had already left for a long time and we went straight to the lake. As luck would have it, the taxi driver dropped us off at the dam and was gone.

3__7_.jpg

Well, then it started... don't go near the lake, you can't come here, don't go there, "snow will fall in the boshka", in general, there are border guards and water protection all around. As we were told, there was less water, so security measures were strengthened - "Logical")))) While they were figuring out where to go, time was ticking. As a result, we were forced to climb up the asphalt serpentine – here we were allowed.

3__5_.jpg
3__6_.jpg

We passed the observatory, were shown Russian passports at the border zone – they kindly let us through.

3__11_.jpg
3__15_.jpg
3__10_.jpg

On the slopes there are many Parnassius Tianchanicus, Coenonympha sunbecca, Erebia turanica, checkers. We have reached the level of 3200. The weather began to deteriorate. In addition to the already familiar Oeneis hora, Clossiana erubescens, Boloria generator and Cupido buddhista, Euphydryas asiatica came across here.

3__1_.jpg
3__4_.jpg
3__2_.jpg
3__3_.jpg
3__8_.jpg
3__9_.jpg

And when the vegetation began to disappear and rocky landscapes began to appear, clouds ran up and a drizzling rain began to fall. We never found out what the heights of the Almaty Lake were hiding... we went down and back.

I don't think it's worth arguing and judging each other. A person from a completely different category, not an amateur, for him photos of mountains and all these landscapes are just a long-passed stage. But don't judge us either for a bunch of maybe terribly similar and boring photos of mountains, remember how the first time you were in these mountains yourself and what a delight it was. I post reports based on the fact that such reports were useful to me as a beginner, which means that mine can also be useful to someone or just brighten up rainy, dull days in the middle zone of the European part. In general, we are looking forward to new publications!

I apologize for not a big digression from the topic, but in my opinion very much "in the subject"! Initially, let's take as an attitude, as a given, that we are all, well, if not friends, then comrades united by one hobby! Maybe some of my phrases seem rude, but this is not out of a desire to offend! After all, what is the topic called? "Travel and expedition reports"! Professionals and Serious people come here to see who was where. What's new where you found it, etc. etc. And newbies and people who for some reason can't get out are looking forward to your reports and stories about trips! They travel with you! They are happy with your success and finds, they envy you! Who is good, who is bad, but this is "ce la vie"! And you tell them the "news feed" - " I was there-good!, here-not very. Of course, there comes disappointment and even some resentment! They say you are a serious person, really engaged in science. I respect you! But I've known both professors and academicians, and wherever you are-be by the campfire, just throw a seed in the evening ! And expedition stories will flow freely! You won't hear it again until morning! But you know the problem with young personnel! Everyone wants to be a banker! After all, it is necessary to attract and infect young people with our passion and profession! In all available ways! And a good "colorful" report is a great contribution to this business, isn't it ? And the time! No time when there is no, those who are busy with business! Idlers have plenty of it. So you always have to find and find time!
Sincerely, Valery( unfortunately I don't know what your name is). Still, we are waiting for your interesting reports on your , as I understand it, numerous trips!

With a short pause, I continue my story about the Kazakh Tien Shan.
Day 5. I really wanted to compensate for the weak previous day on the Almaty Lake. So we were desperate for a more serious route. Chimbulak-Mynzhilki-Titov Pass-moraine lakes-gorelnik gorge-Medeo-Chimbulak. 2250-3650-1700-2250. A little more than 20 km per day. I was slightly confused by the weather, since it sometimes snows on this pass in July, and for 1 day we went light.
We left at 6: 30. First stop at the weather station – and again Delphi. In the morning they are no less nimble than in the afternoon. The grass was still wet with dew and I had thoroughly soaked my slippers)

1__6_.jpg
1__7_.jpg
1__8_.jpg

Having found nothing new here, we moved up the serpentine, as it was said in Google, at the turn we left the path and moved up to the pass.

Height 3200-3300 – a few delphi, chernushki, mother-of-pearl, to all this the eye surprisingly quickly got used to. And then the valley in front of the pass -3500 and silence, like on Lake No. 6.

1__9_.jpg
1__10_.jpg
1__11_.jpg

But I am not discouraged there are still a good 150 meters of clean fine scree ahead, a huge slope, bright sun, although it is not southern, but south-eastern.

1__13_.jpg
1__15_.jpg

But I was already prepared to face Bedromius. I drank some water and started climbing. 5-10-15-20 minutes and nothing... the slope is empty. Beautiful, attractive, like the most it, but there is no one! I'm going to pass 3650. There's only a lone male delphius and a thistle. That's it!!!

1__14_.jpg
1__16_.jpg
1__17_.jpg

After wandering a little, we started to descend to the lakes, on time, because when we descended the pass was covered with dense black clouds, which quickly descended to us.

1__18_.jpg
1__4_.jpg
1__5_.jpg

Here the most beautiful picture was revealed-moraine lakes, the descent to them was very fun, just like on a skateboard! The lakes are just as empty as on the other side of the pass, but very beautiful!

1__20_.jpg
1__21_.jpg
1__22_.jpg
1__23_.jpg
1__24_.jpg
1__25_.jpg
1__28_.jpg
1__29_.jpg
1__30_.jpg

We move along the Gorelnik gorge to Medeo. Across the lakes, a cute little dog came across and immediately joined our ranks. Every time I climbed into the backpack, he literally attacked me in one gulp in the hope of tasting something edible))) Despite the cold and the occasional snowfall, the whole valley is pitted with marmots, they kept a sharp eye on all our movements.

1__1_.jpg
1__2_.jpg
1__3_.jpg
But while I was walking in the mountains, I was constantly nibbling onions and eating.... Here's a dog!!!!

Beautiful places, lots of flowers, mountains are suitable on both sides, but there are no interesting butterflies, again a few delphi, even rarer Pontia callidicae, ubiquitous Erebia mopsos, oeneis hora, Clossiana erubescens and Chazara erubescens.

1__31_.jpg
1__32_.jpg
1__26_.jpg
1__27_.jpg

And below the height of 2500 on this route, there were almost no butterflies at all, but there was a lot of grass and flowers, and the lower it is, the higher it is. In general, unlike the rich descent from Furmanovka to Medeo, the descent through Gorelnik did not meet expectations.
We returned to Chimbulak at 8 pm, the body required rest, there was 1 day ahead, and there was still no Bedromius or Patricius in the standings (

A variation on the hyale theme is Colias grieshuberi

I didn't even hear about this one, I'll spread it out and post pictures, but there weren't many of them there either.

Trans-Ili Alatau. Day 6 – the last one. Of course, I wanted to go back for bedromius on the slope of Lake six, but my companion after the previous day flatly refused, and my legs somehow did not incline to support me.
So we just took a cable car and went up, and then decided to walk down the alpine belt along the southern slope of the Talgar Pass to the river.

Almost immediately, a curious discovery was waiting, on a flat area of the plateau there was a small dry hill that stood out sharply against the general background of Alpine vegetation – I decided to explore. And what is it – a flock of Polyommatus pheretiades gathered on 10 square meters. Moreover, they chose this place and stubbornly did not want to leave. I never saw them anywhere else. I immediately came up with the idea, and how many other species are sitting here in the mountains in isolation on such small patches of land…

Then we went to the alpine slopes. And there was a farewell fireworks display of almost every kind that was seen during all the days spent on the Tien Shan. Only bedromius, actius (although 200 meters above his crowd, but he is proud and does not go down under any circumstances), Euphydryas and Erebia radias were not present naturally. The rest are plentiful, especially Mnemosyne.

The weather was good and we stayed on the slope all day. All the way back along the rocky path, delphiuses were running back and forth, it's funny only 5 days ago when I saw them, I started to get cold feet and now I looked at them almost indifferently)
Early in the morning, the same taxi driver was waiting for us, we returned home according to the same scheme as we arrived without incident.
Now I will digest my impressions for a long time....
I was surprised in the end by the complete absence of local yolks and a small number of pigeons. The only meeting with bedromius left a vivid impression, as I usually say in such cases-there is a reason to return! And the high-altitude apollons of ala patricius are not immediately given to beginners, they need experience in everything, of which I now have a certain amount)

There are always few of them. And Grieshuber himself often calls them Colias hyale altaica, but here he is wrong (as well as many other places). Verity from Altai described Altaika, and I described Grishuberi from Terskey. Both species differ well in molecular, genital, and external terms. Hyala does not go to Central Asia.

I myself envied this 2-3 years ago (in a good way). Now I envy the Pamirs.... If I survive, then I will probably envy Afghanistan and Pakistan, etc.... There is no final stop on this path!

Yes, I have spent the last 2 weeks studying the topic and read a lot of controversy around this type. But in my opinion, there is no point in arguing, so as I straighten out I will post photos as promised.

These are actually in the Trans-Ili Alatau "meadow" yolks.

A little bit about April 2016 in Tajikistan, where I spent 4 weeks as a visiting professor at two universities. A little and ran for a butterfly beetle

We went for two weeks to the Almaty region of Kazakhstan, rode through the desert-mid-mountain areas, spent quite a lot of time in the Altyn-Emel nature reserve, made a collection of milking their museum. The weather was very windy and changeable. During the day, I almost did not catch, not mine. True, Alexander caught unusual yolks, but pr them all questions to him. They flew standard spring hawkmoth-kuzhensis in mass, more than 50 pieces, svitlana more than 20 pieces, proserpina -9, centrasia-1, komarovi-7, Nikea-2, and many very ordinary kindermani, zygophili, hipopaes, euphorbia, small and medium wine, gallia, leghorn. Desert bears, hebes, jacobis, tourensis, fuliginosa, urtiki, sannio, in general, everything is normal. There were quite a lot of cuculias, 7 species, but some in bulk. Almost no beetles were collected, this is not our problem. Hypermester is the most popular day butterfly of this season, along with zegrys and microzegrys. I post a few photos, if the beetles see something interesting, I will be glad to report. We brought a bunch of caterpillars, mostly cocoonworms, and we'll try smile.gifto feed them.
