Let's get back to the topic. We are talking about an expedition for a cardon, and not about home opportunities, when you can take your car, snacks, drinks, and even your wife with you. Abroad, opportunities are severely limited, especially since any trip has a budget. And you need to take a car with a reserve, so renting a SUV with summer tires is a great success. And where he can drive depends on the courage of the "gasket" and its ingenuity. I'm not going to show off, because my car is a Ford passenger car, but I've seen a few things and learned a few things on my expeditions.
In the photo below, the Cruiser (compared to the UAZ - SUV) takes a ford, before that it took even more serious obstacles. My return from Sarez (Tajikistan).
In the second photo, my Murghab teacher shows the Chief of Staff how to take more serious obstacles ( Tayota, Pajerik-they are resting).
Too bad you don't want to see the roughness in the clay. If I had known that this story would arouse such interest, I would have asked Slava Doroshkin to shoot the process of descending on "smooth clay" on video. The fact that I was able to go down is a great success, because You correctly noticed that the ground clearance of the Vitara is too low, and stones that you do not see on the clay could easily break the suspension of the car.
By the way, in Peru, any road can turn into an off-road area, and even if something is under your ass, you still can't pass, and instead of fishing, there will be e.....ka.
Chief of Staff.

That's why I wrote "no fanaticism" when choosing a car for rent. But we entomologists love fanaticism very much, I can't say for everyone, but for the majority, for sure. Especially those who go on serious expeditions.
You understand me correctly, the latest photos are exactly what you need, that's why I bought myself a professional SUV. I don't like to sit at the bottom and envy those who have broken through higher. As for going downhill on clay on summer tires, oh, how familiar it is to me. Only I went down it not for 300m, but almost 2000m down on a lower one with a lock, and also several times I almost fell into the abyss. My wife cried all the way, and I pretended that everything was fine, although I understood what was going on.

Conclusion:

Grand Vitara car for the city, and no friend. And so, and on the bug you can do miracles, also very familiar. Sometimes, as a child, we broke through to where the cornfields and UAZ trucks were sitting. But we are serious people, and we take our passion seriously...

I would also ask who it is. The nature of Peru is still full of interesting insects, especially in places where new roads are being built.
Most of the insects depicted in the photo were removed, some still remained in the wild.
Photo of the beetle taken at one of the exits from the highway, fishing at night. Surroundings of Puerto Ocopa. We have accurate yandex.Navigator data.
By the way, in the vicinity of Puerto Ocop, as Manuel told us, the highest quality and most expensive coffee grows. All the undergrowth is cut down to grow this crop. Finding a place where nature is untouched is extremely difficult.
Vitara helped us go a little way into the jungle, and this beetle was caught there.

Will there be any photos of mattresses? Just interesting to compare, in every sense, this copy...

A copy of the size of no more than five centimeters wink.gif. It looks like an ordinary bug eek.gif.
Historically , I don't post photos of mattresses; I umnik.giftry to photograph all ( almost all insects) in their natural environment yes.gif. This is my credo jump.gif. I apologize.

It is worth noting the high professionalism and selflessness of my partner Slava Doroshkin yes.gif. He painstakingly and carefully collected a huge amount of material on Cossus to our colleague Roman Yakovlev, and on Pterophoridae to his friend Petya rolleyes.gif.
And yet, he's in the Nat.Park Pui Pui, in the evening caught a very unusual daytime butterfly-very similar to Parnassus (maybe he will post a photo of this butterfly on the forum).
For beetles, we clearly worked in the negative frown.gif. They didn't set traps, didn't look for beetles on the trunks - they collected only what flew at night, and even in the Nat.In the park between Villa Rica and Oxopampa, having caught huge (about 10 cm.) female hercules, we did not look for expensive males in the trees. Our interest is butterflies, and that's not all.
I collected only cockroaches for Leonid ( one cockroach the size of a mouse), took praying mantises for Zhenya, and finally caught one Thinworm for Svyatoslav smile.gif. The rest is in the photo....

I named this beautiful beetle - ground beetle Sulkowski, because the insect is found in wet high-mountain canyons, along with the butterfly of the same name.

The fishing spot is purely "Thin-stranded". But there was only one single copy, the drawing is readable. Maybe this place is full of them in November and December.

I will focus a little on these photos in order to sl. generations of hunters remained intact. As you know, the best point for the night is the primary forest and a good viewing position. When we came to this point on the way to Atalaya, I suggested putting a screen in the middle of the road (there was a suitable spot there), but Slava, as a former climber, suggested standing on the edge, because the stones hanging at the top of the rock did not inspire confidence. And the appearance of the road suggested that a mudslide had recently descended here. In principle, I didn't really resist, especially since there was already a pile of only recently fallen stones on the road.
At dusk, we did just that. Put the screen on the edge, the car was removed even further away. The night fishing was good. On the road during this time passed only three cars, as Vyacheslav guessed. ( I bet him three pounds. Granadillas). The magic tricks started closer to midnight. During the day, the heated rocks began to cool down, and perhaps the ant generator teased the mountain during these six hours.
At first, three or four heavy stones broke off and fell on the road, followed by more and more. And then, in the darkness, the mountain came to life and decided to move its huge shoulders. When the KAMAZ-sized boulders fell, Vyacheslav and I were already making our feet, but they were wobbly with fear. We gave up everything: the screen, the generator, the fees. One hundred percent point place, because if the entomologist hadn't thought about the consequences, the blocks would have taken life, the generator, the screen, and maybe even the car into the abyss.
Realizing what had happened, we put in a bottle of beer for courage and continued fishing. The screen with the generator, thank God, did not catch on, but this event seriously spoiled the mood. We could have been standing there. Later, the flight of insects worsened, probably crushed many of them with stones. In general, we decided to finish fishing, despite the children's time.
In the evening, we thought about whether to go to Atalaya or not, and at midnight the problem was solved by itself. Early in the morning, at the request of drivers traveling from Atalaya to Satipo, we drove back to the nearest village to report the collapse and ask for equipment. One Indian from a local tribe was driven forty kilometers to a telephone booth on the roof of Vitara (there was no room inside). It was original.
But some people thanked us, and others just drove us sleeping off the side of the road. Such is the gratitude of some "Chingachgooks". That's why they say: "Do not do good, you will not get evil." The Russian Entomological Special Forces could not have done otherwise. So this is fate, even if they are still alive. And thank you for that.
On the first. photo: the road to the collapse, on the second photo: the fleeing Chief of Staff takes photos online, especially for the forum, on the third: in the morning, we enter into a dialogue with the affected people, agree on assistance.

In the fall, Manuel will come to the Moscow Fair, so if anyone wants to meet him and visit Peru as part of a group, they can arrange directly. Sociable guy, speaks good English. There will be no problems with the removal of insects.

Both mariposa and scarabaceae are impressive. Peru is a unique country. 3 completely different types of landscapes: coastal zone (near the Pacific coast), desert biotopes (Nazca, etc.) and b. h.the Amazon presented in the report.
And how many species of insects are still unknown to science!!!

In conclusion, I will report on my expenses. Looking ahead, I can say that expenses can be significantly reduced by saving on food, accommodation ( however, we only lived in a hotel for five out of 26 days), gasoline (if you don't make stupid movements), buying a generator (by the way, in Peru we only saw expensive options - $ 400), etc., etc. Permission not to export insects costs $ 300. ( for 900 butterflies and 100 beetles). In reality, we were carrying about 2000 units. Nonsense, but as Manuel said, if you charge for a seat, you can miss the plane, because Peruvian customs officers like to count their gold. It is not possible to make a permit yourself, even if you know Spanish perfectly (ex. make up persons who have access to environmental officials).
As a result, the cost is: A plane ticket - 49000r., rent a SUV-1700 USD. for 26 days ( you can rent a Getz, then the figure will decrease by half, and you can rent a cross-country motorcycle, then the rent will decrease by another half, etc.). Change on the spot 1000 USD. on the nose ( taking into account a very comfortable life). Export permit of $ 300 for two people. The total is (I'll convert it to rubles): 110000r. You can save money again by taking a plane ticket for a year. Keep in mind that you should always take a supply with you - at least $ 1,000. The announced figure is slightly overstated, because we gathered overnight ( the Entomological Special Forces have no other option - the order can arrive at any moment), besides, the General Director of a large company ( Vyacheslav) was part of the group, and we allowed ourselves all sorts of goodies and "aftertaste". We live only once, so that there is something to remember.

Gasoline in Peru is expensive and costs about two pupaars per liter. Therefore, the bulk of the money was eaten up by continuous refueling. For example, to get from Lima to Satipo, you need one and a half tanks of Vitara. Gasoline evaporates like ether after passing through endless mountains and passes. And if you take into account pointing your finger at the sky ( as in our trip), then this expense will be very modest.
As for the inverter, I will answer this: personally, I have never used this type of energy production and will not use it. Car addiction plus overspending on gas doesn't really fit in with my night fishing style. I took a 10-kilogram Kipor and went to all four sides ( one tank filling is enough for five hours of continuous operation - 2 liters.).
Manuel, on the other hand, will be coming to the Entomological Fair in the fall, and therefore he has nothing to do with tourism in the style of "Nasco-Cuzco". His interest is mariposa, and wealthy gentlemen collectors wishing to visit the habitats of mariposa.

So did Manuel go with you, or did he just arrange the trip in some way? What was the organization, other than the export permit?

When Manuel found out where we were and what we were doing, his eyes popped out of his head. From him, I learned that getting into the Nat.It is impossible to park Otisi by car ( only by boat), and only kamikazes can drive from Atalaya to Cuzco ( by the way, I will take one forumchanin for sl. year. to complete this journey on a cross-country motorcycle. We will start from Lima).
Manuel's services were expensive for us. He takes a group of four or five people and his workday (full of minced meat) costs from $ 400. And if you want to go into the Jungle, eat wild monkeys and tease the backside of a Jaguar, then he will take 400 pupaars from one nose (again with a full stuffing). His companions are usually rich Americans and Japanese.
Catch insects in the National Park. The park is absolutely locked up, and if Manuel had been with us when we caught Morfid under Will Rick, the handcuffs would have slammed on his hands in the first place.
We needed an export permit as insurance. We remember the recent events with our compatriots.

The only problem that a motorcycle naturalist has is how to escape from the wildebeest confused.gifthat easily penetrates the tent wall.gif. After all , if there is no carmol.gif, then there will be no place to hide weep.gif. You will have to go without stopping mad.gif.

How does a midge get into a tent? With a fine grid, none penetrates!

Why can't entomologists sleep? confused.gif It's well past midnight, and I can't get the tent out of my head eek.gif. Well, I still have one foot left in Peru ( it's just afternoon fishing there), but it's already night in Russia. It's time for bed redface.gif.
Fumitox, Comarex, Of and even Dichlorvos will not take the Peruvian wildebeest umnik.gif. And he enters the tent without knocking ( even if you finish it) mad.gif. As soon as you start to fall asleep, and over your ear Bzz... "Good evening." It would be better if the Good Elk stoll came in once than to sleep all night with the Bad Peruvian midge lol.gif.
Slava, an avid fan of tents, even learned to sleep in the car frown.gif. And he kept saying: a tent, a tent, there is nothing better than a tent. No guys, there is nothing more reliable, convenient and comfortable for sleeping in nature than a car. You just need to be able to sleep in it. A tent is an inevitability if there is no other way out.

Question to the audience: What kind of animal is this?( In photo 9861, a Peruvian woman holds the animal by the collar - more detailed picture)
On the first photo: The fruit of Entomological Special forces-granadilla, it gives the soldier strength and endurance. Natural growth of the fruit.
