And we have frost again.

29.12.2020 6:19, alex017

We have -14, 30cm of snow piled up, as a result, it became 40cm in some places.

30.12.2020 10:09, Hierophis

Well, how are the praying mantises, already faded? And the forecast did not come true, in Perm only -27, thirty-year-olds stopped somewhere near Nizhny Tagil) This is all thanks to the Euro-Atlantic Forces jump.gif
Yesterday it was +10, this afternoon it should be +12, but it's still overcast.

Alex, will you be on vacation? Well, "from 1 to 13") We have from 31 to 11 jump.gif

30.12.2020 10:33, alex017

The mantises are sitting in their containers, having eaten a couple of cockroaches each. The small one is also still alive, feeding on midges. They didn't shed.
We had -22. According to the forecast, nothing more terrible,- 10-12. I shouldn't have brought snow to the greenhouse.
So hold out until February, and then the sun will warm up.
I wonder if vinograd, apricot, peach, cherry (it will most likely survive), eremurus, lavender and evergreen blackberries will survive in the greenhouse. On the street, I don't really believe in the survival rate of apricots, but suddenly.
And in Ukraine, as usual, it's warm. That's why it is Ukraine. Not an exiled land.
There will be holidays, but even now I can't say how much. This does not depend on public holidays in any way

Well, at least have a rest, and then all in business))
Of all that I have listed, only grapes can be called "southern", in your conditions it is probably really impractical to grow them in any form. I have already written about eremurus more than once - they are not afraid of frosts and grow where it regularly happens to -40.
Trees suffer not so much from severe frosts, although it seems that at ok-30C, apricots and peaches freeze their reproductive buds, and in general, trees suffer from sudden weather changes-from strong thaws immediately to severe frosts, and this, by the way, is typical for my region, it's good that at least it doesn't get so cold, otherwise all the trees would be they have been frozen out for a long time, but the fruit buds freeze regularly.
I have often read that apricots and sweet cherries are grown in your area, but they do not bear fruit.
About the apricot greenhouse(and we have it for the female sex)) this is not only a heat-loving, but also a drought-loving tree ) She does not like dampness, when when the fruit ripens, there is a lot of rain and humidity in the air, sores develop on the fruits, and they fall off, and the fruits and sores along with them)
Cherries cherries and peaches in this regard seem to be simpler..

30.12.2020 12:05, ИНО

+1, overcast. Snow cover, obviously, remains on NG.

About apricots, of course, Pan Stepovoi mostly wrote crap. Although how do you know about the frost resistance of apricot to a person who lives where the frost is -5 - the rarest grief? In fact, apricot really does not like frosts over -20 in combination with strong winds. Not only generative buds freeze, but often the tree itself also freezes. After harsh winters, up to half of our specimens die. Moreover, this death occurs indirectly through tinder boxes and can last for several years. But already in the first year after frost damage in the habit, the prospect is clear. A resident of the Dry-Steppe province also made a mistake about the rains. They are harmful only during the flowering period of apricots and a couple of weeks after that, when monilia is rampant. After, on the contrary, the more rain (within reason), the better the harvest. Although we must admit that even in a drought, an apricot will give birth, unlike, for example, an apple tree. But Pan is right about the soil: it should not be too swampy, for example, apricots do not grow at the bottom of flooded gullies and along the banks of ponds near the water's edge. And, perhaps most importantly, apricot does not tolerate shading, the more sun, the better.

30.12.2020 12:24, alex017

31 and 1 should be weekends.
In the bot.apricots grow and bear fruit in the garden.
There's some southern apricot left in the greenhouse. I don't have any hope for him at all. On the street I planted apricots from seeds grown in Siberia. There are a couple of apricots grown in the open ground, from our city.
Two peaches. One of them is imported, its twigs are ripe, quite decent buds. And he had already survived one winter. There is a second one made from sunflower seeds. The twig didn't ripen. I think it will freeze out. Yes, I did not immediately hope for it: non-maturing bark on branches is not for our region, at least not for open ground.
It's a pity that I can't find a second such imported peach. I haven't really figured them out yet. Peach from dampness is affected by frizziness, i.e. fungus, but two years were normal, especially the first year was very wet.
I took the grapes from a local breeder who removes the grapes in buckets, but lives in a private house and has the opportunity to heat the greenhouse with gas.
Again, the neighbors have black sour grapes growing. It is sour, because it does not ripen (I think so). The greenhouse is not heated by them.
I planted some eremuruses in the greenhouse, some on the street, and one at home. If they survive on the street, I'll make a flower bed out of them.

30.12.2020 20:24, Hierophis

Wow, the apricots are actually bearing fruit and the fruit is ripe? Although, they write that for the fruit to ripen, apricots need a temperature range of up to 1700C, but this probably depends on the variety and there is less.
Grapes as everywhere write very much like the abundance of sunlight and high temperatures and dry air, like apricots, but they write that for grapes, depending on the variety, you need the sum of temperatures from 2000C to 4000C.
I counted you from April to September and counted 2400C, but this is still not entirely true because the fruits can not ripen for a very long time, I think that the grapes may not really ripen or disappear, and the apricot may well ripen, 1700C is typed at the beginning of August in your country.

I calculated for our region, from March to October 4200C turns out, wow.. almost doubled!

31.12.2020 7:39, alex017

Of course, we have experienced temperature spikes, but less than 30°C. I meant that the day off will be December 31 and January 1.
I read that the natural dye of wine is black mountain ash. Mb somewhere and grapes of course.
Somewhere there may be super-frost-resistant grape varieties, but you need to look for them. I spent three years looking for yellow apricot blackthorn. You can't just buy something valuable.
Yes, our apricots do not just ripen, but ripen very tasty, better than imported ones. I planted wildflowers so that I could plant varietal varieties on them later. While street trees graft for some reason does not work. We need to train.
This is not the way to calculate temperatures. In a polycarbonate greenhouse, they can be higher by 20°C from the environment in summer, spring and autumn when the sun is active. For example, the snow in the greenhouse disappears in February. Water in plastic bottles thaws in March and no longer freezes until the end of November, i.e. this time in the greenhouse is a positive temperature.

Even though we could hear the cannonade, I didn't see a single salute from the window because of the fog. In the courtyard, I saw only a group of people with sparklers in their hands. I think it's because we haven't sold fireworks since 2014. But in previous years, apparently, they were imported from the Russian Federation and Ukraine. But this year, the coronavirus blockade has obviously intervened. In general, if it were not for my gypsum board(c), our yard would have remained without a new year's fire at all. If everything goes the same way and continues, then yes, homegrown pyrotechnics will soon be in demand just as they were in the USSR.

Oh pan heeded my remark - pofotkal still living creatures! I also went to nature yesterday, but in our weather realities I only had a chance to take pictures of various bizarre forms of frost.

01.01.2021 20:19, alex017

Here you can take pictures of the next 3 months already nothing!
Everything is white.
I bought more small praying mantises. Only they turned out to be Mantis the dog. All 10 gnats were eaten. I looked at them at home. They don't look all right. I don't take them anymore.

01.01.2021 20:33, Hierophis

In general, I'm surprised that you have a lot of praying mantises being sold there!
I searched in our ads, they also sell them, there are sphodromantis, our hierodules, and religious ones. Prices for the ootheca Hieroduli are about $ 1, for Hieroduli larvae $ 3, for adults $ 4. The Ootheca sphodromantis costs as much as $ 20.

Are you sure you're religious? Well, actually, so what, the stories are also very interesting.
I take it you don't have any kids to take pictures of. But in vain. I would make a macrophotonasadku, fotkal would senoedikov in bathrooms, once three months on the street to take pictures of no one smile.gif

02.01.2021 8:23, alex017

So we have a lot of things to sell. Geckos, agamas, iguanas, snakes, monkeys, ferrets, ostriches, cockroaches, and bronzes. This is only a small part of the sentence.

But the mantis is not so much in full swing. Two people. One is from Perm, the child is still there, the other is from the region.
I don't want to buy pharmacies. I didn't look at the prices, I think 5-10$.
A couple of sphodromantis cost me$ 14, as did a dozen religions.
I can't say anything about accuracy, except for sphodromantis.
It's a bit strange to sell ootheques in your area. You can collect them.
Today, the female sphodromantis is shedding. I hadn't eaten in two days before.
Take a picture of the larvae probably with the phone is possible. But I don't want to.
I put them all in 500ml containers. Sfodromantis in 2L containers.

02.01.2021 17:42, Hierophis

Well, you give, so you can also collect ootek hierodule, but you need to go to where they live wink.gifHere go to Krymnash and collect, far away? Well, let's say we have, from Chernihiv to Kryvyi Rih, where the hierodules already live, far away, and here only 25 UAH and your ooteka) Only here the merchants messed up less, and then they sell ooteki hierodules as a religion...
And why don't you want to take a picture?

I don't recognize Pan - what creepy pictures, except for the first two. Or after the celebration of Rizdv, the firmness of hands and tenacity of manual focus disappeared?

Of course, the weather in the Dry Steppe province is excellent, not that we have two days of rain. The snow is almost all gone, muddy all around. I went to catch flies for likose food , but I couldn't find them. Although the temperature is high, +7 in the afternoon. Maybe the oyster mushrooms will finally be trampled.

Alex, you have something to take pictures of - snow! This is really very interesting - each snowflake is unique, one is more beautiful than the other. Especially if there is a strong frost. I took a picture of the frost on the 31st, but it's a little off-kilter because of the near-zero temperature, so you should have a better one. You can also take photos of warm-blooded vertebrates and their tracks.

03.01.2021 12:30, Hierophis

Well, I sympathize with you, and your praying mantis, in general, mantises are really not the easiest animals to keep, they need a terrarium more or less similar to the natural environment, first of all there should be a lot of different twigs, despite the fact that there is also an empty space under them, secondly, and this is very important, mantises on the one hand they do not like humidity and stagnation of air, but they also do not tolerate dryness and strong drafts. Ideally, they need a terrarium made entirely of mesh, with live plants, and a constant humidity in the room not higher than 70 and not lower than 60. Well, or with fluctuations in humidity in the morning / afternoon 90-50, as in nature.
I have mantises in such a terrarium always grew perfectly, not everything is made of mesh and there is forced ventilation, but the fan turns very slowly, so the air flow is slow, and the humidity increases at night.

And again Pan expert on praying mantises wrote crap. Well, yes, he always grew mantises, but I forgot to mention what percentage of the number of larvae of the first instar. He's got a jungle on Terra where everyone eats each other, natural selection in action. But in fact, mantises do not need any huge mansions, and even from the grid. I grew Transcaucasians to imago in cages made of two plastic beer glasses connected by a wide part. Yes, the holes were pierced with an awl and not one row, but without fanaticism. If there is nothing wet inside, such as living plants prescribed by Pan for some reason, then there is nowhere to take dampness, regardless of the amount of ventilation. And out of 20 mantises, only one female in such conditions shed crookedly, as she fell during molting, but in the end she lived the longest, because she still learned to take food from tweezers, unlike the others. The main secret of proper molting-twigs should be concentrated in the upper part of the terrarium and one or two on the side, so that the animal can climb on them. The praying mantis should hang from the ceiling, not sit on the bottom.

Alex, what exactly is wrong with your praying mantis? Let's take a photo, maybe everything there is not as scary as you think. For example, dented wings do not play a role at all.

Well, or a scorpion, from pandinus. Of course, you can't really take them in your hands, but still, it's very interesting, with a scorpion - so in general it's absolutely safe, you need to try to make it bite, you probably have to drive the telson into the skin yourself)
Well, or an exotic amphibian, a water carrier, for example)
Mantises, stick insects, leafhoppers are such animals with which a lot of trouble, often die.

Dead? If not, then it was still necessary to touch-try to hang it back. But I do not understand, in the photo she got out of exuvius already or did not even start? If it did, it wasn't the last molt yet. And in any case, it's a matter of falling. It should be noted that some tropical praying mantises still need high humidity and in dryness there may be problems with molting. Pan Stepovoi, of course, does not know that. Is there any free space for molting? It's too cramped. By the way, I have one hierodule with the 3rd molt on the balcony on grapes lived and grew up to an adult, did not crawl away anywhere, fed marbles, but grew up and crawled away) Can you plant it on a flower?

05.01.2021 21:31, ИНО

Alex, don't listen to the expert - he'll crawl away, and you'll be looking around the apartment for several days. Of course, it may not crawl away, this is a probabilistic process, but why take such a risk? Just in the terrarium, the free space from the place of suspension of the praying mantis to the bottom should be slightly longer than the body length, then it will shed normally, if it does not fall. So you don't answer my questions about the female for the second time already? There is a feeling that you have something to hide in this case.

06.01.2021 7:01, alex017

There is such a thing - work. While you go to it, someone dies, is born, something breaks, and then you die yourself.
When I went in the morning, it began to shed, and in the evening I found it lying down, the skin lying next to it. I tried at least to plant it with my front paws on a twig, the back ones were generally like threads, they were braided and did not obey. But she didn't hold on, just moved a little at times, and then she died.
Terrarium in the photo 30L, one compartment-15L. It's huge, I gave you a photo earlier. The heights there are 10 times the size of a praying mantis. The grid is there from the sides and top. On the flower is impossible, because the neighbor's cockroaches are regularly poisoned by me.

You shouldn't be so sure. But you can't live with cockroaches.

06.01.2021 15:35, ИНО

There is an easy way to remove cockroaches (prussians) in an apartment without poison - to starve them out. Namely, do not leave any crumbs, hermetically close the trash can, do not leave unwashed dishes in the sink. The easiest way, of course, is just to leave the apartment for three months, but you can do without this by strict self-discipline.

Indeed, something strange happened to this female-she doesn't look fatally injured, with such twisted legs, they usually live normally if you feed them with tweezers. Although the chances of surviving the next molt are falling.

06.01.2021 16:28, alex017

No crumbs, no water drops. Everything edible is put away in PE bags and cans, and more often in cans, so as not to feed the mice. We don't see anything edible in the bucket.
But cockroaches can eat murraya petals. These reptiles are omnivorous.
As for the female, I think she broke her head or neck in the fall.
And small ones die from blackening like grasshoppers in summer.
Small ones were put in a heated terrarium.
