Well, yes, it is typical for the south of Ukraine-it is a steppe, or disturbed steppe, as in some photos. But just beyond the Dnieper River in Kherson there are quite dense natural forests, small of course, but the trees there are not enough for two people to grasp, wink.gifthe only thing that happens is that there are swampy floodplain forests, you don't look like much there, peat bogs, all sorts of streams everywhere. Orchids all overgrown) And mosquitoes-full))
There are also pine stands there. It's a bit dull there, though - there are also interesting animals)

Here are the cases: I caught today the same previously mentioned forest "uuuhhh" but instead of it I got a crunch. I thought that Amphimallon solstitiale finally got to Donetsk. But no, when examined at home, it turned out that this is a banal Rhizotrogus aestivus, and a male. In June! And "uuhhh" has not yet been caught, it sits very high and flies, but "we are on the way" (C). A three-meter net was not enough, tomorrow I plan to test a six-meter one, the main thing is that it does not break under its own weight, and then there is a chance. But in a good way, we would need a fifteen-meter one, at least. There are such rods for the so-called plug fishing, including those with a hard bait upper knee, where a small net would fit perfectly instead of a bait cup, but they cost so much that you don't want any "uuuhha".

And here's another thing: the deer flew.

Wow, I was there yesterday (or rather. now the day before yesterday) in such a place with such relics, I could not imagine such places in Donetsk, and even two steps from the center, before. We are talking about a section of the Kalmius River slightly higher than the Lower Kalmius Reservoir. I went on a fishing trip, but it didn't work out very well, as I understood, it's not very good with fish. But the nature is simply amazing: on one side, an oak grove is about a hundred years old. At first I thought: is it really the remains of the same natural ghost forest, about the former existence of which I recently told this topic to the ignorant Pan Stepov? But alas, judging by the arrangement of the trees in regular rows, it is still a landing, but very old and completely neglected, so that the nettles everywhere, except for the single path, have grown up to their chests. The trunks of oak trees at a height of more than 10 meters are covered with girlish grapes, which also seems to hint at the absence of any obsessive attention of the forestry enterprise. And on the other side - the same impressive poplar grove, where, undoubtedly, in the autumn there should be a notable crop of poplar rows. The immediate banks of the river are quite steep in places and are thickly overgrown with a great variety of trees, shrubs and grasses, some of which I saw covered with snow. In many ways, the river reminded me of the Crimean Alma, but it is clearly visible that these are only insignificant remnants of its greatness, which was before the beginning of human economic activity. After all, we used to have a navigable river in every gulch here, so the Cossacks used it to ferry the fleet between the basins of the Dnieper and the Sea of Azov almost without a portage. Now all the tributaries of the Kalmius river in Donetsk can be crossed, but it has not yet completely stopped flowing into the stream. And the water also slightly spoiled the impression of its turbidity, but perhaps it's not in the pollution, but in the recent downpour upstream.

Insects were found apparently-invisibly, and many species were hitherto familiar to me only from the floodplain of the Seversky Donets, and some even saw for the first time, for example, the larva of tetrx. But most of all, I was struck by a meeting with a certain simply huge (from a large swallowtail in size) nymphalid, either Limenitis populi or Apatura iris. According to the literature in Donetsk, neither one nor the other, or anything like it at all, is found. I watched only a few seconds in flight, of course, there will be no photos. But it's still nice to find some almost cryptozoological creature, and at the same time - and a place that can pass for a Lost World in the first approximation. It is only a pity that it is surrounded by dense buildings everywhere and has greatly degraded. It remains only to imagine the former richness and splendor of the nature of our region.

It had been overcast all day, interspersed with a blue sky, but it wasn't until just before sunset that the rain, or rather a downpour, began to fall, and I was on my way back to the bus stop. Therefore, the pictures of the rainbow are already taken on the bank of the reservoir, where the cultural center of the city begins. By the way, what does Pan khvotograkhv have with pictures of this natural phenomenon, and why does he hide these shydevry, posting anything about the weather, but not photos of meteorological phenomena. And one more thing about the weather: it didn't rain in the area of my residence. And on the eve of the events described, the whole of Donetsk was similarly flooded, but we were not touched. As a result, with mushrooms span, and strawberries are questionable. And today it got colder sharply, a maximum of +19, and the wind rose quite strong.

I wanted to take it first, but then I remembered about the pupal diapause up to two or more years, and left it. Last time, three pupae, along with a jar, disappeared irrevocably somewhere in the bowels of the apartment.

So what about diapauses? Pupae let them hang themselves, they will not eat))
A few years ago, I had an unsuccessful experience in removing from caterpillars, although not polyxena, but our Zerynthya caucasica or Alancastria, which is close to it, who calls them what.
So, I collected a lot of geese in May, along with kirkazon. I also found two black caterpillars on a rhododendron tree. And with a bad mind, he put them all in the same jar together. So those caterpillars that were collected on the rhododendron did not eat it, but instead devoured the tender Zerinthia caterpillars, and later died themselves for reasons I do not understand. I can only assume that the rhododendra was not their feeder, so I didn't Google it much, but I couldn't find out who feeds on this very poisonous bush. So they imprisoned those with hunger. I certainly didn't see them eating them, but after the night they disappeared from the jar, and it was impossible to escape from it. Well, a sad experience is also an experience))

12.06.2017 17:58, ИНО

But they ask you to follow them. This is not a fulliginosa bear. Which independently in a liter jar safely hatched and also safely without my participation in a completely undamaged state died. In general, I have a lot of other classes, so that I can still live out polixene for two years. I don't do any butterfly harvesting or butterfly trading. There is one copy of polyxena in the collection - and that's enough. Here is that huge nymphalid definitely worth catching at least as evidence. But alas, it was without a net, and with a net it will not be so easy to catch it, the gullies there are notable...

Kirkazon is also very toxic. And the caterpillars that feed on them-accordingly, they are not for nothing of this color and sit quietly in plain sight in the middle of the day. So maybe that's why the blacks are dead.

Oh, fuliginosa)) one of the very first butterflies bred by me from shaggy caterpillars collected in the garden in my distant childhood))
I wrote it a little inaccurately - only one of the black ones died, and the second one was urgently taken to the forest, under the same rhododendron bush on which it was caught. But for some reason they stubbornly refused to eat it...

I've been thinking for a long time whether it's worth writing this here at all, so I still haven't written it on this forum yet, so I think they'll probably think I'm senile here, but I swear that a very long time ago, about 25 years ago, in spring, around May, in cloudy weather, in the area of Greater Sochi (Morskaya Dal boarding house), I saw a huge butterfly, very similar to the Tail-bearing Maakka. I know that the spring generation of them is small, maybe it wasn't Maakka, but something very similar to him or Bianora, black and green, with tails. We only have Saturnia Piri of this size, but it definitely wasn't Piri, because I've seen it fly many times and it was during the day.
And not only I saw it, but also one of my childhood friends who was nearby, he didn't catch insects himself, but he just liked to walk with me. He saw her, too, and shouted, pointing at her. This butterfly was rushing rapidly, as sailboats rush when they are not planning, but "gaining momentum". Of course, there was no way to catch her. I ran after her then, but she quickly disappeared behind the trees.
The fact that it was a butterfly, and not a bird or a bat, I am sure, t k at that time had been fond of insects for quite some time and could not be confused in any way. But what kind of butterfly it was is still a mystery to me. Such things...

Another option is that the wind could have carried it across the sea from somewhere in Turkey, but I don't know if there is something similar in the local fauna. But of course, in this case, this is not maakki, which is a purely oriental species, and bianor could hardly jump over a bunch of mountain ranges.

Charax, perhaps? We have it for the Crimea as a rare stray brought, as far as I remember. Or does it not fit in time?
About polyxena: derived from the last-stage caterpillar collected in Sukkot in early June.

Well, at least you treat the birds humanely, you understand that it's not worth putting them in a jar. It's a pity, the situation with insects is different.

I also got caught in a heavy rainstorm after sunset today. There was a faint hope for mushrooms.

15.06.2017 1:47, ИНО

I went to balka in the morning. After the rain, everything was wet, it's good that I put on rubber boots. The temperature was comfortable: +22...+26, the wind was light. Cloud cover, as my mother says in such cases, "then go out, then go out." workers appeared on some nests of Polistes dominula and P. nimpha, and Vespula germanica workers were also seen. But there are very few working bumblebees, mainly argilaceuses, very rarely - terrestris and not a single lapidarius. There are many times more queens of all types on the flowers than workers. abruptly, a huge number of single wasps of their different families, including male scolia maculata, flew out. Yes, greetings again to Pan Stepovoi, who did not believe that this species is found on the flowers of sage drooping. The species diversity of bees has also greatly increased. Among the mace-whiskered butterflies, he met a few fresh anguloptera, latonias, a flying burdock, and dead shashechnits and marigolds (the latter somehow managed to get frayed unusually quickly). And the admirals, of course.

On the way back, I caught the coolest "uuhhha", although I was without a net. Lucky to catch a stick. The female, now for divorce it is necessary to catch the male.

I clicked a lot of Megafotok(TM) with a special focus on my favorite intimate genre of Pan Stepovoi.
