Dear forumchane!

Tell me, please, whose caterpillar is this? It looks like some kind of wave...
They crawl in droves to pupate.
Astrakhan region, Znamensk, early October.
Some have already pupated. The difference between males and females is very pronounced, females are twice as large. The length of female caterpillars is 35-40 mm.

Thanks!

Orgyia dubia

Will they come out of their pupae soon?

05.10.2015 21:10, Alexandr Zhakov

The males are fertilized in cocoons and the newly released caterpillars eat the female's body.
That's if I didn't get anything wrong. smile.gif

Grass cocoonworm — Euthrix potatoria (Lasiocampidae) and caterpillar affected by a fungus,
possibly an anamorph (asexual reproduction) of Beauveria bassiana (Cordycipitaceae).

This cute orange scoop is more like the original green podalirium, going to pupate. A twig for him, not the soil. Although it's probably already pupated.

If those with a light stripe on their back are Spilosoma sp., they should pupate in the fall. If with red bellies - aulica, it will overwinter as a caterpillar.

And can Phragmatobia fuliginosa (among Spilosoma sp.) be among them?

I don't think so.
By the way, fuliginosa overwinters as a caterpillar at the last age.

I grew it once smile.gif. At the last age, I built myself a cocoon. It's been 10 days. From the balcony, I moved it to the refrigerator, then when I got it out, it was already too late.

Or maybe Macaria signaria, because the caterpillar seems to be young and there is no date.
