Just a joy: this forum is what I need, since there is no one to consult in our province, I am not an entomologist at all, but I urgently want to identify one find. The caterpillar was found in the Valdai National Park, near Lake Velje, in July 2008, on a goat willow. To turn around and pose stubbornly did not want to. I looked at various images in the identification codes, but there was nothing like this there. I hope for the community here. smile.gif

this is the false-caterpillar of the sawfly (hymenoptera). I can't define it up to the type.

Possibly Cimbex femoraria. But the color should be light yellow-green

Thank you, thank you very much!!! I looked through everything that was found about the birch sawfly and I agree that this is really this species. There was also an indication that its caterpillars can be reddish or blue in addition to the usual green.

16.02.2009 8:48, okoem

Only the correct name is probably still Cimbex femoratus.

It is similar to Phragmatobia fuliginosa.
You don't need to do anything on purpose, just provide the butterfly with something to climb into so that it can spread its wings after leaving the chrysalis.
