Their "single-species" affiliation is highly doubtful to me...

It is variable with a terrible force (which only does not happen). That's why I put it "in a pile" )
P.S. To be honest, I'm surprised myself, but they are determined by a person whose definition does not cause me any suspicions.

The last 2 according to the "geographical profile" are really more suitable for P. agglomerata. Externally, these species are similar.

are there any morphological methods of analysis? I also have Orenburg 1 piece (as I understand extreme) and there are "Kazakhs", but from the north. orenburg is not prepared, and the Kazakhs are all with "personal belongings"

at least take a close-up look at the process of the mid-thorax to begin with.
yes, and still confuses the elongation of the corners of the suture part of the elytra in the 3rd specimen - this is certainly not a variable sign.

In the corresponding volume of" Fauna of the USSR " there is a description of both species (Karelian and agglomerate).

In the Orenburg region, there really should be Karelini, because the area of agglomerates (according to the same source) is Uzbekistan and southern Kazakhstan.

20.11.2016 15:08, AGG

Sash, a link to the sources of the 900-shaggy years, even such as "fauna" has not been "rolled"for a long time. there is an accumulation of material and the boundaries of the areas are "moving" . Why not write "I haven't seen any material ...I don't know"? and it is better not to write anything at all. if there is something on the topic, then show the genitals of males from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and others like them of both species and justify this not by variability, but by species affiliation wink.gif

22.11.2016 1:14, Dergg

The question seemed to be about "morphological methods of analysis"... I suspect that since 1960, the appearance of these bronzes, including genitals, has not changed much.

Andrey, I think the whole point here is that smb beetles are mounted on dies and there is simply no way to show the underside.
It is undesirable to glue representatives of this genus on dies because the defining features (the so-called process of the mid-thorax) are closed.
Well, or you need to pre-take a picture before mounting on the die smile.gif

Actually, there are a lot of options - transparent dies, dies with a tenderloin, finally nothing prevents at least a couple to mount on the back. Of course, it is easier to work with a tattoo, but for remounting-soaking, on the contrary, it is more convenient to use instances on dies (especially if old instances).

I also mount the beetles on a transparent die - a drop of glue is applied under the abdomen of the specimen and, accordingly, the process of the mid-chest is clearly visible.

But to photograph the underside of a beetle, in any case, with the equipment at my disposal, is really problematic.

There is nothing easier and the technique has nothing to do with it smile.gif
All my photos were taken with the oldest and cheapest soap dish OLYMPUS Camedia C-480 Zoom. Which, however, has already rested in bose (I publish archive photos) frown.gif
You just need to poke a hole in a piece of styrofoam (you can paste it with Whatman paper), with a diameter slightly larger than the thickness of a pin. And stick the subject "upside down"there (after removing the labels) .
Well, shoot. Protaetia, indeed, should be laid out with the underside

It is noticeable that those that are declared as agglomerata have such a feature: the points of the posterior periarticular depression are collected in peculiar rectangles. The suture gap is noticeably increased, compared to karelini. The white pattern of the elytra of karelini is more dense, shallow, and indistinctly fused. In agglomerata, it is larger, sparser and presented with single spots. As Mikhail rightly noted, the suture angle of agglomerata is elevated in most specimens.

The Potosia theme does not stand still and is actively developing. A new species from the highlands of Armenia was recently described.http://jlalpanseque.free.fr/crbst_221.html It
turned out that the classical species Potosia fausti consists of two closely related species: POTOSIA HAIASTANICA (TIGRAN GHREJYAN & MARK KALASHIAN 2017) and Protaetia (Potosia) jelineki Petrovitz, 1981

Very interesting. Hyerogliphica has a thinner and more developed relief of the elytra and pronotum, a developed punctuation of the abdomen, caucasica has a wider and shorter process of the mid-thorax. Most likely cuprina. It reminds me of my copy from the Crimea, or rather, the first generation, obtained in artificial conditions.

I also think that cuprina. But, as usual (for me), in the case of cuprina/hyerogliphica, there is no certainty about the definition.

I will post a few instances defined as Potosia cuprina, editing the definition is welcome.

I will definitely define Crimea and Ossetia as cuprina. From Karachay-Cherkessia much closer to hyerogliphica. The specimen from the Astrakhan region resembles the so-called "Baskunchak beetle" in the shape of the mid-thorax process. True, most of the "Baskunchak beetles" have a bright color, but there were also black and dark bronze ones. In turn, the "Baskunchak beetle" is most similar to hyerogliphyca depressiuscula from the site http://jlalpanseque.free.fr/crbst_112.html.
Color spectrum: golden-green-light golden-pink-red-red-bronze-brown-bronze-almost black. And plus greenish-bronze ones.
I do not rule out the simultaneous occurrence of cuprina s.str. along with the Baskunchak beetle in the Astrakhan region.A series of photos of the process can distinguish it from caucasica, as some say. Or vice versa, you can't tell the difference.

The range of P. cuprina s. str. most likely does not extend beyond the line of Turkish Amasia and western Crimea. What is further east can be roughly called "P. transfuga". When comparing the series of P. cuprina from Eastern Anatolia (namely, from the Marmara region, the Aegean region) and the entire part of the Balkans with cuprina from the Pontic region and Transcaucasia, clear distinguishing features are visible. In general, the cuprina group consists of forest beetles with a large mid-thoracic process, and hyerogliphica s.str.
The Baskunchax beetle is more closely related to P. caucasica. Species of this group (which also includes P. splendidula, P. haiastanica, P. jelineki, and P. mehrabii in addition to caucasica) have a smaller mid-thoracic process, a wider body, and live in open, mesophilic-mesoxerophilic spaces.

I got lost in European reports. I'll duplicate it here:
June 2017, Greece, Center. Macedonia, 7 km west of Asprovalta, h=700, oak forest.
There were a lot of bronzes around (aurata, cuprea, angustata), and this one was found in a single copy, sitting on the forest floor. Female, 23 mm. On the process-like kupreya. By color (dark blue with a purple tint) - like mirifica (which, it seems, should not be there).
What kind of miracle is this?

Donetsk, early June of this year. Protaetia affinis, but it is possible that P. aeruginosa/speciosissima is also mixed up somewhere (by the way, what does the party line dictate at the moment about a valid name?). The height above the ground is about 10 m, below 3 m neither one was launched. The number of them in that forest was such that in the evenings the hum was like under a power line. However, it quickly declined. now there are only a few instances, and not every time.
