Calliteara virginea (Oberthür, 1879)
In my opinion, this is the most beautiful wave of our fauna. In Russia, it is found in the Amur region and in Primorye. There are also very local finds in China and North Korea. In Japan, it is known only from one small area in the west of Honshu Island (in its central part) and is considered very rare.
Excellent photos of the first ages, cajarc has already put up in this topic (post from 26.07.2014). cajarc has kindly provided me with the opportunity to bring this wonderful species out of the tracks.

Calliteara nilgirica (Hampson, 1891)
This species, described from the south of the Hindustan peninsula, flies in most of its vast range(the Himalayas from western Nepal and further east to southern China and Hainan Island; almost all of Indochina, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Java, Palawan) together with the following species - C. grotei. There are minor external differences, but some species differ only in their genitals.

Female (60mm) - northern Thailand, leg.S. Murzin, det. T. Trofimova

Calliteara grotei (Moore, 1859)
This species is found in central, southeastern and southern China (including Hainan Island); in the Himalayas (from Pakistan in the west to Sikkim in the east). It is found in southern India and Sri Lanka. It is also found in the north of Indochina. The southern part of the range covers the Malay Peninsula, north Sumatra and Kalimantan, as well as the Philippine islands of Palawan, Luzon and Negros.
Next, a photo of a "classic" color pair of this species from China with dark gray monophonic front wings. However, males of this species may have light areas at the base of their forewings and fly with one or (!) several genital counterpart species, depending on the locale. Special care should be taken when working with Filipino material.
Male (42mm) and female (67mm) - China, Shanxi leg.Viktor Sinyaev
These butterflies were bred by P. Morozov from eggs obtained from a "wild" female. His photo essay of the preimaginal stages of this species and live butterflies is already available in this topic on the first page. However, there they appear under the name " Calliteara horsfieldii "(posts from 06.07.2008-22.10.2008).
I express my gratitude to Morozzz for the interesting material!

Calliteara strishini Trofimova, Shovkoon et Witt, 2016
The species was described from males from Ambon, Buru, Seram and Cay Islands. The female has not been formally described yet, but due to sexual dimorphism, a DNA test is needed to confirm the species identity, for which my specimen is of little use. The fact that this specimen belongs to C. strishini may also be supported by the fact that fr.Other species of the "pudibunda" group with an undescribed female have not yet been reported.

The species Calliteara ignorata Trofimova, Shovkoon et Witt, 2016 is divided into three subspecies, which differ both in appearance and in the structure of the genitals.
The nominate subspecies is found in southern China (Sichuan, Yunnan), northern Indochina (Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam), and northeastern India (Assam).
By the way, the name of the species indicates that it can easily be confused with several similar ones. The exact definition of the male required a study of the genital structures, which was conducted by D. Shovkun.

The "conjuncta" group includes 4 very "diverse" in appearance, living in mainland East Asia and Japan. Combining them into one group is very conditional and preliminary.
Calliteara conjuncta (Wileman, 1911)
It is found in the Far East of Russia, on the Korean Peninsula, in central China (Hubei, Shaanxi) and in Japan (Tsushima, Honshu, Shikoku Islands).
Male (39mm) and female (48mm) - Russia, Primorye, leg. cajarc
Female (48mm) - Russia, Primorye, leg.V.Vasilenko

The taxon Dasychira phloeobares Collenette, 1938, was described from Shaanxi and synonymized with C. conjuncta. In the color scheme of the Chinese population there are yellowish and brown tones, specimens are somewhat larger than seaside ones, but the structure of the genital structures is identical.
In Primorye, this species can produce a partial second generation.

The "complicata" group currently also includes 4 species.
The most widespread of these is Calliteara complicata (Walker, 1865). It flies in the Indian Himalayas, Nepal, in the mountains of China (Hubei, Shaanxi, Tibet, Sichuan, Yunnan) and northern Indochina (Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam). The view is highly variable. So far, it has not been possible to identify stable geographically isolated forms. This will require further research involving DNA testing. So, under the guise of C. complicata, several related species can theoretically hide.

The group "strigata" includes 8 species, which are united by the similarity in the structure of the genitals of males. Most of the group's species fly in the Himalayas and mountains of China.
The most widespread species of the group is Calliteara strigata (Moore, 1879). It is found in northern India, Nepal, Bhutan, China (Tibet, Sichuan, Yunnan), Indochina (Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia), Sunda Islands (Sumatra, Kalimantan (Borneo), Java).
