I study at the MSU biofactory Faculty, live in Moscow, and-alas-I can hardly go to St. Petersburg for praying mantises.
If you want, I can bring you an ooteka of wood or corn, but only at the end of September.

06.09.2007 21:30, Феанор

Thanks! Until the end of September, we will somehow live childless smile.gif
And from where?

06.09.2007 21:58, Tigran Oganesov

I'll go to Sochi - there's a lot of this stuff there. In general, I still think to drive to Anapa or Gelendzhik for irises and jellyfish, maybe it will work out.

He brought a praying mantis from the Voronezh Region, put it right on the glass of the terrarium, which really set me up. Now we must find him a new home, otherwise he will devour all the young growth.
I understand that young mantises will hatch under favorable conditions, i.e. humidity and high temperature. When is it better to start growing them, right now or in the spring?
Also, I read on the forum that molting is the most unfavorable moment, but I didn't understand when it happens.
I would be grateful for any advice on growing young pilgrimssmile.gif)

07.09.2007 22:45, Феанор

Food should be ready for hatching - aphids or wingless fruit flies(you can also eat winged ones, only one will be eaten, 10 will fly away). Where to get them was discussed here. We must first breed them in sufficient quantities, then hatch mantises.
And molting happens first once a week, then less often and the out-of-sync starts.

I've seen enough photos on macroclub.ru and fell into a reverie: who do I prefer, normal praying mantises or empusa? Normal people are simpler and more human, but empuzy... "how to say it ryuski..."... these are empuses. eek.gif

sos May Gloria postponed the second kokan this is narmalno. eats regularly and eats everything that I catch her is normal.

I have a friend who deals with "dead" petrified animals. So somehow he brought "something" for a long time I thought what kind of animal is so new, I could not synthesize it in any way. I put it in the"long box". A few months later, I opened it and saw a lot of small praying mantises hatched from the "fossil"!!! This is how it happens.

If it's not a secret, where will the" fossils " go in the future?

People ) Sumy, Ukraine, a praying mantis was found on the grass on the street. There is an aquarium for 8 liters, I can shelter it, but what to feed - I have no idea. They don't like bloodworms, as I understand it, and it's impossible to find other insects in a pet store.
And another question - do they bite? I just want to put a miracle on my finger.

28.09.2007 13:33, omar

Live insects can still be collected on the street completely. Almost anything is suitable, except perhaps large and hard predatory beetles. Feet can scratch hard if you want, the jaws do not bite through the skin.

weep.gif mol.gif Hi!10augusta Dad brought home a praying mantis, at my personal request!settled in the aquarium there sawdust, sticks, grass!named Bonya!!first I caught her grasshoppers, put them in the aquarium, she hunted them so interestingly!but since I work grasshoppers could not always catch, I decided to play pranks, tied a piece of raw meat on a string and put it in the aquarium...she got it...and began to eat!!!Since then, I've been feeding mostly minced meat!she also drank water very often!three weeks later, she laid the masonry,a week later another one!a week later, I started feeding her, but she couldn't catch it,got sick, gave me some water and drank it...I woke up last night and she was dead!Why????questions-what to do with masonry?how to feed young animals?what can they buy at a pet store?I don't know!!!I still cry for Bonechka...Help!please respond!Lady.from Khabarovsk.196

01.10.2007 21:08, Guest

If we assume that Bonya managed to meet a male in her short but happy life, then offspring can be expected. It should be fed with drosophila, just released cricket larva, or other small insects at hand. But I will not give you an exact method for incubating mantis masonry in temperate latitudes. There are 2 options.
1st moisten the soil in the aquarium and wait.
2. place the masonry in a place that can help simulate wintering according to the temperature regime. Then take it out and wait again.

confused.gif and where to buy these fruit flies?!are they sold in pet stores?is the balcony suitable as a winter shelter?

03.10.2007 0:36, Shik

where to buy praying mantises in Moscow? smile.gif

03.10.2007 19:38, Guest

Fruit flies are everywhere ! Or almost everywhere where there are rotting fruit and vegetables.
And on a slightly fermented vinogdad... rushing headlong wings.
Theoretically, it can.
Practically speaking, I'll try it only this year.

04.10.2007 7:23, Guest

damn I don't even know what these fruit flies look like?so you will need rotten fruit?a nightmare!is it normal that my Bonya ate raw meat?

It is normal, but it is better to feed live food.

These are such small flies. IMHO, not at all nasty, but instead of rotten fruit, they can be bred on thick jelly.

This is my first time here! Once I found a cocoon on the street, I knew it was a praying mantis, but I didn't know how babies hatch, so I decided to leave it. And after a while I open the lid of the box and hundreds of pieces of small boogers crawled on me!!! I have both joy and fear!! Fear of where I should put them!? Well, what should I do?...I took them outside and left 3 of them. They lived with me for a long time, fed aphids. I observed two molts, and then released them.

But recently I found an adult. I feed them flies, but I don't know the measure. Who knows tell me how many flies a day you need to feed the mantis??? And also how to distinguish a male from a female?? And what to do with a praying mantis in winter???
Thank you very much in advance!!

07.10.2007 15:09, Tigran Oganesov

Mantises themselves know their satiety limit - they won't eat more than they need.
The praying mantis is unlikely to stay for the winter (if it is an adult), most likely it will die by the New Year. The male is smaller and thinner, with long whiskers and a good flight pattern. Females are thicker, with short whiskers. This applies to the common praying mantis (Mantis religiosa), which is most likely where you live.

07.10.2007 16:55, шелти

Oh well, thank you!!According to this data, I have a female!! Is there a chance that she will lay a cocoon??
And one more question!!... on the previous page I read that some praying mantises overwinter in the larval stage!! It's like?????!! confused.gif

These are empuzas, so they spend the winter. Who do you have?

08.10.2007 14:26, шелти

I have an adult individual mantis

4 days ago my krasavitza postponed an ottek. Of course, I'm glad, but the praying mantis lives in my ficus tree and decided to put her "kids"on the branch of this tree. I read here that the outflow can be put in the refrigerator so that the kids do not hatch in the winter, but what can I do, I will not break off the branch, and even in the most visible place!! People tell me after what time ina wait for offspring, and what should I do with it then??

20.10.2007 20:21, Боря

What do you look like?
If M. religiosa, then my exit from the library, which was postponed in early September, occurred in early November (last year), i.e. development without diapause took about two months.

21.10.2007 8:51, шелти

I don't know what kind. I live in Krasnodar. Maybe this will somehow help with determining the type. I'm really afraid that the larvae will hatch in winter, what should I do with them??
Please tell me!!!!!

21.10.2007 13:29, Guest

Supply and maintain a culture of fruit flies and, for example, crickets or cockroaches. You can not bother with the last two, if you can regularly buy maggots and remove flies from it or get them by catching them.

22.10.2007 9:39, Боря

Ooteka can be carefully picked out and placed in a jar, otherwise you will have to collect the kids all over the room. Ooteka should be at least five cm above the bottom, because after leaving they hang for several minutes on special threads under it, hardening. It is convenient to attach it to the lid. For information about feeding and maintenance, see my and not my messages above.
I feed crickets of the 1st age, because drosophila fly away. You can get them if you put adult females in a container with a layer of earth (3-4cm), where they lay their eggs. This container should be placed in a warm place (e.g. near the battery) so that t does not fall below 26-28*S, otherwise the eggs will die. Small crickets come out in 10-11 days.

You can determine the species by typing 'mantis religiosa' and 'hierodula tenuidentata' (or 'tree mantis') in the search engine.
It is logical to grow as much as you can, sell the rest-distribute to those who want.

26.10.2007 16:13, шелти

I found out about the view from the same mantis religiosa root, and I'll try to pick out the ooteka. yes.gif
Many thanks to everyone!!!!

What city do you live in?
If you registered and filled out your profile, it would be easier to communicate.
Tree mantises I have now only at the stage of ootek, wintering. When they come out, I'll write.

24.11.2007 17:14, Мих

So how long do tree mantises incubate???
I have about 20, some were in the refrigerator, some were not. All exactly fertilized, but it's been more than 2.5 months after laying? Is there still any point in waiting?

24.11.2007 17:57, Мих

Hello everyone! I registered with you, a very interesting forum!
A little about me: for several years I have been trying to keep and breed mantises of wood and common, I have studied them in every conceivable detail, but so far there is no special success..
In 2003, he caught a lone tree female in the Crimea, he lived until the end of autumn and died...
In 2004, he bought and kept two rod-shaped praying mantises (Tenodera Tenuidentata). One died in the 1st, the other in the 5th age
In 2005 caught wood larvae in the Crimea. I caught 8 females and 1 male. After the last molt, I lost a male due to my dope.. The females died as virgins..
In 2006, I received from a friend several ooteka ordinary, the larvae came out, successfully grew to predimago, and during the last molt, almost all the females died! 2 out of 3 survivors had very strange injuries: bent pronotum and unfinished wings.. 2 soon died, and one healthy refused to mate! What kind of disease it is, I do not know.. can anyone tell?
All summer of this year, while I was in Sochi and the Crimea, I caught tree and common mantises whenever possible. I caught only 35 woody ones, 5 common ones. There were a total of 25 pairings. About 35 ootek trees and 3 common ones were deposited. 2.5 months have passed. Some ooteka froze, nekoorye cooled down to 5, 10, 15 grdusov, for different periods! Some voobshe did not move from the place of laying. Some are lying in the room, others - on the window.. Derenysh-NO!!!!! I know that I need to wait and hope, but I don't know the incubation period. I'm not sentimental, I don't treat insects like little green men, but I never stop being surprised by them. I even wrote a paper on them, it will be sewn up soon.. Am I going to be unlucky again?
If someone bred arboreal, please respond!!!

Hello.
Question about growing in 2006, when the pronotum curvature was observed - the growth period fell on autumn-winter? They received food not caught in nature, but artificially grown insects?

Yes. Larvae fed first on wingless and then winged fruit flies. With 2nd molt, cockroaches( prusak, gray, pereplanet, shifordela) But more often-gray.

How about a question about the ooteka?

25.11.2007 16:44, Guest

I have in September, a female common mantis postponed ooteka, I did not think and left her just in the terrarium, just a couple of weeks ago, mantises hatched from there, now about half have diedfrown.gif, the rest I feed drosophila, its larvae and newborn marbles, they live perfectly. Also now at home sits a female Egyptian praying mantis l4. n next week I will go to buy a male.
In general, ootheques of domestic species are kept in the vegetable department of the refrigerator for 2-4 months, and then kept at room temperature and get mantises. You want to get kids early, but you can try to raise the temperature in the terrarium and I'm sure that you will get offspring within a couple of months, by the way, you can't sell the treehouse or if you want, we can change, write hdhog@ua.fm

25.11.2007 18:02, Боря

There is an assumption that development requires direct sunlight (specifically, ultraviolet), under the influence of which any necessary substances are produced (similar to the formation of vitamin D in humans). It is also possible that they can get these substances from food, from insects that grew under solar or artificial UV radiation. Tree mantises that grew up in the summer and fed on natural insects (mainly grasshoppers) laid oothecae normally. When I grew M. religiosa in the winter, they grew to imago, mated, but did not lay ootek.
You can try lighting the feeding areas of insects (for example, crickets) and / or the mantises themselves with a reptile lamp, and see what happens. I read about an experiment on agamas: the group that was fed crickets grown under a lamp like Repti-Glo grew and developed normally, and in the group that was given crickets grown without u / f, rickets (curvature of the bones caused by a lack of vitamin D) was observed. In your photo, if I'm not mistaken, there is also a softening and curvature of the skeleton.

ootheques of domestic types are kept in the vegetable department of the refrigerator for 2-4 months

Friends from the Moscow zoo say that the incubation of M. religiosa oothecae in the refrigerator gave zero yield, and they advise you to leave it at room temperature. I have at room temperature came out in about 2 months. It is possible that in nature, the temperature drop from +20 to close to zero occurs much more smoothly, in weeks or days, and not in minutes, as in a refrigerator, and the embryos have time to react by producing the substances necessary for transferring low temperatures.
I don't know about the time of incubation of woody plants, this year they postponed their ooteks for the first time.
