And I have a question about empuses. Do you think that the winter dormancy period is a necessary condition for them, i.e. they cannot develop further without it (like hawk moth pupae), or do they go into hibernation only because of a drop in temperature, and if it were not there, they would grow without stopping ? That is, there is no actual hibernation as a period of rest, but only a decrease in activity due to the cold and, as a result, a stop in growth ?

Well, we agree with you on the sale of a certain number of bogmols( most likely a pair), you go to the train station to the conductor of the train to Kiev and give him money - to him and to me for the bogmols. The train arrives in Kiev, the conductor gives me the money, and I send you bogomolov on an oncoming train. in the box. The next morning you have mantises.

I'm interested in the same question. Also, in what larval stage should empusa hibernate?

10.09.2008 15:32, Guest

another question: where to catch empuzas in Crimea??? They won't let you go to Kara Dag anywayfrown.gif

10.09.2008 17:15, Мих

Catch... I know exactly where there are a lot of them, I've been looking for 5 years myself. You can search near Alushta.
Or you can write to me in PM, tell me how much you are going to catch and what to do with them next - and I will tell you the exact place where I caught 6 empuzas in 20 minutes.

10.09.2008 20:05, DmitryBurkow

Catch an empuz? I will soon have a tantrum at this phrase... I spent 2 weeks in Astrakhan "catching" them... I examined every bush, roasting in the sun for days on end. There are plenty of Ooteks around, but no empuzas. All the other praying mantises come across, irises, bolivarias, mantiss... I got my empuzas from the ooteka, which is very easy to find in nature. I've only seen a live empusa in nature once - a larva ran across the road in front of my nose and sniffed... I still haven't found smile.gifit

10.09.2008 23:55, Мих

And I was looking, looking.. I've been all over Koreiz and Gaspra county, all woodsmen. And suddenly... I went out in the mountains to a meadow. And in the meadow - irises, mantises, ameles.. And I saw the empusa ! I was glad.. last day of the month, leaving tomorrow. And run through the nearest bushes.. at the pace of 20 minutes before sunset caught.

11.09.2008 11:30, Guest

MIH, I just want to take a picture of these creatures, and also try to breed them at home, I don't have much breeding experience, but I still want to try. ameles, irises and arboreal trees are also interesting. Judging by the Red Book, all this can be found in the Kara Daga area, so I'll risk going to look for it, maybe luck will smile on me smile.gif

15.09.2008 22:03, Мих

!Interesting observation! After mating, female praying mantises and irises have a slightly open tip of the abdomen and an organ("umbrella")sticking out of it for 2 to 10 hours This phenomenon is not observed in common mantises and Crimean mantises.

15.09.2008 22:50, Мих

Who bred empuzas, what was fed to the young? at me drosophila do not eat the third day! What else can I give you?

16.09.2008 8:52, SVV

What is the age of juveniles? They may not eat if they are cold or about to shed. I feed aphids, drosophila and all sorts of "plankton" that I manage to mow in the park.

16.09.2008 19:39, Мих

Hatched recently, they still don't eat. 2 out of 4 people died. the rest started eating wingless fruit flies.

17.09.2008 14:23, DmitryBurkow

L1 empuses eat whatever they catch, as long as it's warm. I even caught house flies once, and a piece was eaten off. the first 3-4 days do not eat at all, then a little. But when they get hungry, they throw themselves at everything. My favorite food is fruit flies, aphids, hay eaters, and even small ants. The main thing is to warm them well.

17.09.2008 15:00, Мих

Thank you, Gray. How many degrees is the optimum?

18.09.2008 8:37, Mikael

Need a little help. What kind of praying mantis is this?

18.09.2008 14:43, Мих

Hierodula Tenuidenteta(transcaucasika) Central Asian tree mantis. Adult male.

18.09.2008 15:17, DmitryBurkow

I don't know in degrees, I have 20-25 in my apartment, I put them 2 times a day a 25W lamp for 2-3 hours, they come running and warm up. And they usually hunt at this time.

Mikhail, are you sure this isn't a religious person?

18.09.2008 23:29, Tigran Oganesov

Definitely male Hierodula transcaucasica

Are they running around apartment smile.gif0_o ?

A female common praying mantis put aside an ooteka, I carefully tore it off and put it in a box from some ointment, having previously wrapped it in cotton wool and put it in the refrigerator on the lower shelf (then a week later another one, I also wrapped it there). Please tell me how much they need at least to spend the winter and does the number of days of wintering affect at all, so that small pilgrims would hatch safely?

20.09.2008 9:58, Vivius

oO I mean, I tore off the ooteka and wrapped it in a box.

20.09.2008 15:10, Мих

Affect. It would be better to put them on the balcony closed until spring.. and you don't need cotton wool.. it is better to hang on some branch.. higher up. In cotton wool will be displayed-there will be trouble.. on a closed balcony will be released in the spring.
If left in the holodilnik, you can keep it for a month or more, and take it out. then the mantises will be ready for the New Year. But this can be done if you have food and ultraviolet light.
And the fertilized ooteka?

20.09.2008 15:22, Vivius

most likely, the ootheca is fertilized, because the fertilization process itself took place, after which it ate both males. Ultraviolet light is there (I just can't imagine how to irradiate them, because it doesn't penetrate through the glass, but if you open it, they will probably run away and at what distance to keep the lamp), there seems to be food too (marble cockroaches and their brood), I also read drosophila flies, well, I think it's easy to start (I wonder if they are in winter can they start on rotten products?). Dear Mikhail, how often do you need to take out ooteki from the refrigerator?

20.09.2008 15:56, Vivius

I just registered smile.gif

No, I had robots running around my apartment. And jellyfish in the aquarium. They "resort" to the glass behind which the lamp stands.

22.09.2008 8:40, Мих

running and not running away?

22.09.2008 11:50, DmitryBurkow

No, they sat on indoor plants and did not run away anywhere (even males). We moved around at night, of course, but I found everyone. Only one female disappeared a couple of times, but after a day or two she returned to the place where they feed =)
But if you keep them like this, you can take photos with comfort:

Definitely a male Hierodula transcaucasica

OK, thanks.

I kept and photographed only imago and predimago drevsenykh, but there is a problem in the territory - on one windowsill of one praying mantis.

Buy a praying mantis in Minsk?

24.09.2008 19:27, Мих

Late. My sales are over.

27.09.2008 15:47, Мих

No one has any idea why, since the beginning of September, none of my praying mantises (except for amelyses) have not yet been put off by ootek? All conditions are the same as last year, with the exception of the external weather-outside the temperature is 7-13 degrees and it really stopped raining today. But in the house the temperature is the same. Mantises eat just as much. But there are no ooteks. Please tell me?

28.09.2008 22:46, К-399

Comrades. Who lives in St. Petersburg. A male cow is urgently needed. I can try to exchange it or buy it. eek.gif

And there was no choice for them - they sat on what they were given (in the photos). Some kind of ivy or bindweed, I don't know much about them. Something hanging and long, the normal population density is 1 praying mantis per 30-50 centimeters. The leaves are wide, so they get a "personal protected area".

Empuz now contain 11 pieces in a 15L aquarium, where I threw branches. One problem is that they are unrealistic to find there. So the rule applies: those who hid well were left hungry.

30.09.2008 14:13, Guest

can I buy an empuz from you???????

02.10.2008 21:31, guest: Nata

Please tell us if the bogomolikha (owl) was caught at the end of June, and since then it has faded several times to an adult state. The other day, she postponed her ooteka. How can this be if you've been living alone all this time? The ootheca must be unfertilized... Does it make sense to expect anything from this library? Or is it possible for them to be fertilized in "childhood", and after a few months - to lay eggs? Thank you in advance.

03.10.2008 18:45, Мих

No, unfortunately, nothing will come out of your library. but. I have a male cow, completely superfluous.. Where are you living?

03.10.2008 21:22, guest: Nata

In the Moscow region... too far away...
And do I understand correctly that after postponing the ooteka, she doesn't have long to live?
