in general, I would not give such meat to empuzas)

13.02.2009 23:26, Феанор

Uhh I would these kozheedov....

Duc. That's why I'm asking. I found a couple of them in the department)
Why shouldn't empuzas be given this? I usually feed them fruit flies and moths.

Say Hello To Everyone. 200 mantises(Mantis religiosa) were hatched. I sell for 30 rubles apiece. If you're going to pick everyone up. I'll give you 20 rubles each. Go to Zoo-ekzo.ru. Maybe you'll find something else for yourself. You can find your contacts on the website.

I wonder if it's possible to feed an empusa who doesn't have a prehensile joint in both hands. When molting, the skin from the thigh, shin and paw did not come off, and I noticed this only a day later, so I could not remove it.

11.03.2009 12:52, 4upakabra

There are pilgrims. Spb. Lichka.

11.03.2009 12:54, 4upakabra

If it wasn't an empusa, I would have answered 100% in the affirmative ... "it's possible.

11.03.2009 20:55, Феанор

And how? She refuses to eat until she grabs the food, and she can't grab it.

12.03.2009 15:57, Боря

Try to do this. Cut the fly lengthwise or crosswise so that the pectoral flying muscles show. Slightly crush them so that they protrude outwards and, taking a piece of chitin from the side with tweezers, dip it in water with your muscles down, then, lifting it, leave a small drop of water hanging on them. Slowly bring it to the empusa's head and make the drop stick to her mouth.
The point is that water, wetting her mouth, immediately conveys to the taste buds the taste and obvious edibility of the "meat broth" formed in the hanging drop, and eating can no longer come into play instincts of repelling an incomprehensible object, but eating. However, you will have to keep it until you are full.
If you can feed them in this way, please respond.

This method will not work. Empuzas never drink water and do not like juicy food. As soon as he feels the water , he pulls away. Unlike other praying mantises, empusas do not eat what they get when washing, so they will not eat without hunting.

If she can't fold the "knife" at all , then it's bad, there are very few chances. If at least one paw joint has some kind of move-hold it without food for a while, so that it gets hungry, but does not waste energy.
Then take a bunch of fruit flies, rolled into a ball, pick up the wire and hold it to her so that the wire trembles. Such a drosophila ball clings very well even with one damaged paw, and then it's a matter of technique. You can try to crush a few fruit flies so that they stick to their paws.
The extreme method is to grab the back so that it starts to defend itself, and put food in your mouth-chewing will do it. But the jellyfish is very fidgety, it is almost impossible to hold it so that it does not scratch.

Regarding kozheeds: is it worth the risk? You never know what they ate there. Empuzas only need 2 types of food: drosophila and maggot flies. This is their native natural food, and all sorts of deviations except from hopelessness. Well, even small butterflies adults catch...

It turned out to feed the L6 male empusa with a piece of fly!
From a distance of a centimeter, it was necessary to bring it very slowly, about a millimeter in ten seconds. Before that, when I approached faster, I pushed it away several times. I also tried to "stick" a piece of it in his shin, hoping to slip it when it starts to clean, but it turned out without any tricks. It just moved its tentacles and started eating like any other praying mantis, and after a few seconds it grabbed.

How long can you expect to keep a praying mantis in captivity?.. confused.gif
If you take the larva...?
If you take the imago already...?

Is it possible to overfeed a praying mantis to death?

The larva develops to an adult in three to four months, depending on the temperature (the exception is the wintering empusa larva, which grows from September to May). Adult females also live for about three months, males for a month and a half.
I had such a case with an adult female H. transcaucasica, who ate until the membrane on the abdomen under the wings ruptured. A few drops of hemolymph flowed out, and then the wound closed. In larvae, and even more so in adult males, I have not observed this, they usually leave their prey uneaten.

Thank you for your explanations.)
I have one more question. Can you throw a male to a female to mate with him?Maybe it's good for her somehow, she'll live longer there...When I was 8 years old, I threw a green male to a yellow female and she mated with him and sort of ate him off her head.

16.03.2009 22:19, Боря

Cannibalism happens from hunger, so it is advisable to put the male to the female at a time when she is busy eating. When they start to mate, and they mate for about two hours, it is good to feed the female several times with small insects during this time. Then she practically does not pay attention to the male, and he has a chance to leave unharmed. The peak of search activity in males begins immediately after sunset, so it is better to arrange mating in the evening.

Please tell me, I have about a week ago appeared Egyptian sphadromantis. On the first day, the females ate 2 house crickets each, and the males ate 1 each, so they don't eat any more. What to do??? Room temperature.

22.05.2009 7:55, 4upakabra

Do nothing. Everything is fine. Females are usually more voracious than males. Feed once every 2-3 days.

22.05.2009 16:15, MXM

So the week passed. Yes, I'm trying to mate, but again problems ((((, the male either jumps upside down, and then leaves, or for the end of the abdomen and nothing. How often do males mount females correctly??? And yet females are aggressive to males.

Hello! About 6 days ago I caught a praying mantis in Feodosia, after I saw that it ate our beetles, which were so annoying in the evening, I decided to take it with me. Now feeds on grasshoppers, ate a couple of caterpillars. I understand that if there are 6 lobes on the abdomen, then this is a female? I am afraid of the arrival of winter, no one knows, there are pet stores in Zelenograd that sell live food? I was in bagheera and another one, they don't sell live feed(when I came in, the mantis hadn't eaten for 2 days, it's good that they caught it later in the country). Or maybe there are some crickets in Moscow, etc.? And also, I would like to know in which container they actually sell these crickets or do you need your own? The fact that we have winter coming soon, the praying mantis doesn't care if the temperature is + 20 +25?

Catch his prey in the fields and meadows and do not bother buying food, unfortunately, he will live until November-December maximum, you can by the time the insects in nature run out to remove flies from his maggots.

26.08.2009 23:25, Enterprise

Yes, now I do what I catch. There are grasshoppers all the time, but it doesn't react to butterflies. A maggot is a worm, isn't it? They themselves he will not eat, meat after all? So far, I just haven't bought niraza, and I've seen it live a couple of timessmile.gif
Thanks for the answer!
