Polskajite, pupae of cocoonworms, saturnia and other butterflies whose caterpillars make cocoons, can be removed from the cocoon and removed without it, carefully cutting the cocoon with small scissors, or is it better not to do this?

I very often pull out pupae of cocoonworms from cocoons, sometimes it happens that when leaving the cocoon, the wings may be damaged. But it is better to do this 5-7 days after pupation, when the pupa is no longer soft.
It is better not to do this in species wintering at the pupal stage, the cocoon forms its own microclimate, otherwise it may not overwinter normally.

can you give me at least one?

Don't you have one?" In my opinion, the place and time is now. Wander around the oak forests.

The pupa of the average wine hawk moth stopped moving its tail yesterday! Before that, I was actively moving when I picked it up.Yesterday I stopped so abruptly! What's wrong with her?Is she dying?! mol.gif redface.gif

Do not take her in your arms, the pupa needs peace...
If it doesn't move, it means it's either dead or a butterfly is coming out soon.

Don't disturb her and follow the recommendation
And then really "flippers will stick together" with you. Pupa is the resting state of an insect.

Or a bunch of parasites.I also found it on the vine! While it's still moving.Peace is really needed! But with a slight "touch", if it does not move, then wait for the whole collection....This is the selyava of many pupae!

About the swallowtail...how is the pupa obtained without the natural" nesting " of the caterpillar?Glue the heel and use a thin thread to glue the body to the umbrella.Or a stalk in the terrarium-as it should be, almost vertically and wait for the swallowtail...

And a couple more questions.I found a caterpillar crawling across a forest path.Orange-yellow with black stripes.Slightly pubescent with fine hairs.5-6 cm.At first, I crawled very actively, then buried myself in a bucket of earth.I can't post a photo. In the summer, I sit on the Internet from my phone, and when I come to Moscow and go to the computer, I don't have time to throw a photo from my mobile phone to the computer.Help us determine what kind of goose it is and what kind of butterfly it will be!Thank you in advance!

The hawk moth caterpillar looked healthy. At night I ate a lot and then before pupation I started moving

30.07.2011 12:05, Anser

Brazhnitsa-this is exactly how criminals are described in the police chronicle!!!!

30.07.2011 12:06, Anser

Yes, and how did you determine the average wine from the caterpillar????

30.07.2011 12:28, vasiliy-feoktistov

2 Hawk moth. Was there a hawkmoth goose like this?
Then you didn't make a mistake with the definition:

Yes, we always have plenty of it for ivan-tea. Most tired already.

This summer, perhaps even more exotic...(I'm getting better again-I mean grapes about the harvest).

Thank you all for your answers! What about the second caterpillar?Who is it?

You can describe the caterpillar in more detail...

I'll tell you how my hawk moth goose pupated. She was sitting in a child's bucket with earth, and the bucket is between the windows(it is convenient to keep caterpillars there:I closed the first window and the caterpillar will not crawl away, it has a space between the windows! smile.gif ).There was always a fresh food plant in the bucket. The goose ate mainly at night. But suddenly I started crawling everywhere, looking for a place to pupate. She didn't want to bury herself in the ground, so she got out of the bucket.
On the 21st, I had to leave for almost a day.I put a handkerchief on her bed in case she crawls out again.I arrive at eight o'clock in the evening, and she got under the headscarf!I attached it with strings to the window and started pupating there! It will not be buried in slightly moist earth

30.07.2011 13:41, Бражница

I can't take a photo!

Described the goose as best I could

That's exactly the same only the hair is thinner

Yesterday, at work, I caught a caterpillar and put it in a jar so that the next day I could take a picture of it on a good camera, since I've never seen such caterpillars. This morning I came to work with a camera, but I didn't take a picture of the caterpillar!!!! Last night, she made a cocoon for herself and today she spent the whole day crunching something in the cocoon. I understand that she is still completing it! Tell me what this caterpillar is, how to take care of the pupa and when to wait for the appearance of the butterfly now!!!??? Sorry for the quality of the photo on a good fotik could not take a picture, but only on the phone

Good day, forumchane! I'm trying to make the right insectarium for tropical butterfly pupae. I read a lot of things, but I can't really connect them. If you can share your experience, please. The fact that an insectarium can be made from ordinary glass issmile.gif, Here it is ready for me, a kind of"aquarium". I read that you can heat it with a heating cord, put a miniature fountain for humidity at the bottom, hang a digital adjustable thermostat, and put lighting over the pupae. But I don't know how to arrange it properly. I would appreciate any advice. I still don't know what to do with air access so that everything is correct. I don't want everything to turn out exactly on my mistakes from the third time! Sorry for the pupae! I went in, looked at advertising forums, they offer equipment for $ 600, but I think this is not serious. Thank you in advance, Dmitriy

I looked at the diagram, still, a good thing. Just how will the temperature and humidity be regulated? I still don't fully understand... Thank you if you explain to an inexperienced beginner in this business)

In the search engine - handpairing butterflies.... yes, and do not hesitate to study the site...here everything was described more than once, and links to the video were given.

Hello, forumchane!I hasten to inform you of the latest news:
1. The hawk moth pupa moves its butt again. jump.gif It is still quite light and the butterfly does not even think to hatch frown.gif.It has been lying for 2 weeks
2.The silvery hole pupated.Yesterday I dug out a look, and there she is smoothly moving all over, as if dancing!Pupa 2,5-3 cm. and for some reason it is dark.I read that the darkening is due to an early exit, but she only spent a week in the dugout. confused.gif Or can some pupae be dark in their own right?Thank you in advance smile.gif

Responses:
1) 2 weeks for hawk moth is not a deadline (you need at least a few months). The main thing is patience.
2) Many butterflies have almost black pupae. Don't be surprised.
The pupa also hibernates at the Hole: you can not expect quick results.

1. And I read here that without diapause, two weeks sit in a pupa...
2. Clearly. Is there a certain percentage that the butterfly will not hibernate?

06.08.2011 12:19, Olleg12

The dustpan I caught laid the eggs and they turned red. What does this mean? Before that, they beat the yellow ones. Are they alive?

1) It can be bedstraw in the Moscow region for 2 weeks to sit (2 generations often give us), but not wine.
2) I do not know the second generation of the hole. Experiment.....

Can you please tell me how to arrange wintering grounds for a medium-sized wine hawk moth and silvery hole? How many times a week to moisturize?Where to get sphagnum? Can they be released earlier than in the spring? shuffle.gif

06.08.2011 17:27, okoem

The dustpan I caught laid the eggs and they turned red. What does this mean?

This means that the tracks will be released soon.

How many times a week to moisturize?Where to get sphagnum? Can they be released earlier than in the spring? shuffle.gif

I think you can do with ordinary moss or sawdust. Personally, I wrap all my pupae in a thick layer of cotton wool for the winter and take them out on the balcony until spring (but we usually don't have frosts). I do not moisturize, in winter there is enough natural humidity on the balcony.
Some species / specimens may be released earlier if they are not placed in the cold. Some may come out earlier if they are placed in a warm room in winter. There is no definite answer here.

I have a medium wine cellar just on the windowsill (a garden with periodically moistened earth) and usually comes out in December and February. rather unpretentious view.

vasiliy-feoktistov,I don't want to argue with you,but everywhere I read that the average wine hawk gives a second generation in favorable years
