On November 5, he lured males of C. fiduciaria to a female, at a new point for himself. An exciting activity! It is interesting that they, like glassworms, are very difficult to notice just like that. Invisible butterfly. I've been trying to find them at this point for two years, arriving in the right weather for summer, but to no avail. Biotope seemed more or less suitable, and I assumed that there should be, but alas... And now I came with a female - and immediately flew in! At the same time, so to speak, by themselves flying males for the whole day and did not see a single one. Visible only directly during approach. They fly fast and are not noticeable against the background of dry grass. They're also shy.
At the end of the day, a larger and darker butterfly flew by, possibly a male U. hirta. In addition, I saw several flying casanella males during the day, and one female crawled on my sleeve.
From all this, I conclude that the species can be widely distributed on fragments of virgin steppes on the Kerch Peninsula, and perhaps throughout the entire south of Ukraine. But without a live female, it is almost impossible to see males. As for the females, they can only be bred from the caterpillars. But this is not easy to do.

Djon, what is flying there during daylight hours and can be seen without a flashlight?

I wonder if I read the post from my phone. which is not in the topicsmile.gif, although the last author is Nolik, and the post is not visible. Problems navigating to a new page. I hope it will appear. I answer his question. smile.gif
Daytime butterflies are probably no longer there, before this warmth there were small night frosts. At the end of October, Vadim went there, from daytime without specific identification: golubyanka, zheltushka, belyanka. In general, Lemonia dumi flies there, if you get there in time.

Yesterday (28.12.2016) in Feodosia, in the city center, I saw a flying Admiral. True, it was hard for him to fly, because it was cold, the sun warmed up to barely +10.
In general, the whole of December is unusually cold, mostly "minus" and snow. Here and now the snow is blowing, everything is white...

08.03.17 I went to the Kherson region, to a gully in the west of Berislav to an oak forest plantation in order to search for moths. I didn't find them, and by the time I arrived (around 2 o'clock in the afternoon), a cold wind suddenly blew in and the whole sky was overcast. But I met someone.

But I managed to observe yazykana on March 8 in the city of Odessa. Circling the flower stand. Did the migrants arrive so early? Or did the local spend the winter somewhere?

In the Crimea, they definitely winter, why not spend the winter on the mainland? I saw it here in early April.

Can only yazykans or other species of hawk moth spend the winter at the imago stage?

I didn't know that they spend the winter in the Crimea. I always thought they'd freeze out. In this case, it is most likely wintered.

We are talking about Ukraine. In my picture of the worldsmile.gif, both the pupa and the butterfly hibernate at the yazykan. Everyone else has a pupa overwintering, not counting migrants, and we have 6 species of them. Two common ones are bindweed and ruled, two rare ones are death's head and oleander, and two hypothetical ones are big wine and alecto.

Most likely, the yazykan (imago) winters only in the south of Ukraine, in the northern part the butterflies freeze out, as I have never seen them in the early spring.

I went to the Kharkiv Forest Park on 07.03.17 to open the season, and there is still snow almost everywhere. During the walk, there were almost no daytime butterflies, since there is snow everywhere, there are very few glades warmed up by the sun.

What I met:
Nymphalis xanthomelas - 1 exx.
Alsophila aescularia - 2 exx (males)
Agriopis marginaria - 1 exx (male)
Agriopis leucophaearia - 1 exx (male)
and some kind of female moth , I haven't determined confused.gifyet, probably A. aescularia.

Why is Alecto hypothetical? I myself personally caught it in Dagestan in the twenties of June, quite fresh, obviously not stray. And I know other people who were caught.

In the twenties of June, there may already be a local generation of early migrants, or a migrant. Butterflies that fly in the spring give one or two generations of already native ones, but in winter they freeze out and start all over again.
Hypothetical-there are isolated indications of finds, but there is no stable migration like other species.
I forgot about the 7th Ukrainian migrant, also hypothetical-Hyles vespertilio.

He's in the Carpathians, isn't he?

Yes, but the last time was about 80 years ago in lit. and according to oral reports like there are more recent ones., the same as Hippotion celerio.

18.03.2017 6:40, Sergey Rybalkin

I also collected this seventh migrant in Dagestan, a whole series, but in a slightly different place.

By the way, it would be a good idea to subdivide your Leptidea: Nearby, in the Vinnytsia region of Ukraine there are both sinapis, so is reali. It's probably the same thing in Moldova.

Nope in Moldova everything is normal
