what kind of syringe is this?
Insulin syringes with thin needles for small butterflies and thicker needles for large scoops.

Guys who are in Moscow and the Moscow region., can do the preparation of genitals?

Andrey, I don't want to be a jerk, but ...
Specify the question: what is the group of insects prepared that is, filled in on slides? or soft ones in glycerin. and more details, otherwise you'll get a very interesting answer.

Sasha thanks for the tip.
Interested in preparations in glycerin, with the ability to photograph the genitals through a microscope.
I would like to deal with the geleheida that recently emerged.

Good afternoon! Who in Moscow or the region can perform a genital dissection to clarify the definition of such species as: Leptidea sinapis/reali, Colias hyale/alfacariensis, Melitaea athalia/aurelia/britomartis ?

05.01.2015 13:57, Jukoman

Friends, I have a question - is it possible to extract genitals from beetles (large-medium-sized), if the beetle is already dry (collection material)? So, what would be the possibility to use them in identification? Beetles that interest you are lamellidae, hysterids, dead-eaters, ground beetles.

Or it's a "dead" case. I've never worked with Sukhoi, so I'm asking.

Soak and take out without problem

14.01.2015 18:00, Zunimassa

How do large beetles get their genitals? through the back or through the expansion of the anus?

22.01.2015 13:48, Bianor

Here's another question for experts. In what environment do you prefer to dissect your genitals after cooking? Water creates too many bubbles, glycerin is viscous, and ethanol evaporates too quickly. I tried mixing glycerin with ethanol, it turns out to be convenient, but the mixture has a habit of spreading out into fractions...

22.01.2015 13:57, Alexandr Zhakov

Glycerol or solution glycerol x ethanol 3 : 1. You can't use water.
This means working with binoculars.

When working with a micra, the water will evaporate faster than you can tell. smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

Shovel, especially when trying to get the scales, you have to work in the water, but this is an exception.

Both micra and small scoops, such as Schrankia, are all dissected in water. Drying probably occurs from a light source with an incandescent lamp smile.gif

22.01.2015 16:44, Alexandr Zhakov

No, I always work with the housekeeper, it is very quickly necessary to determine then. smile.gif

22.01.2015 16:50, Konung

Wow... always in the water dissected))

Yes, there was such an inconvenience - it quickly evaporated. Then I replaced the incandescent lamp with an LED - now it evaporates slowly. If the detection process is delayed, I add a couple more drops.

22.01.2015 19:38, Mantispid

And I'll dissect it in vodka. It does not evaporate as quickly as alcohol.

I prepare a microbe in glycerin. It seems that there are no special problems, except for the scanty number of butterflies.

The problem is not drying, but bubbles. If you just need to determine, then you can also do it in water, but if you need to take a picture, the water is absolutely not suitable - there are a lot of bubbles, they stick to the drug, it is impossible to expel them, they do not want to burst. It is more convenient in alcohol, but dries quickly. Glycerin is viscous. Maybe someone used heavy alcohols, such as butylene?

Actually preparations in water and alcohol:

Where's Juxta?"

23.01.2015 10:26, Diogen

I haven't tried it in alcohol, I must try it. An alcohol-glycerol mixture is usually used.

I pulled it out because of my crookedness teapot.gif
I took a separate photo, but it wasn't included in this photo.

Well here it seems like everything is in place:

And another question immediately and in the subject and not in the subject. Has anyone tried ripping out epipharynx from beetles? How realistic is it to do this without critically destroying the instance? Are there any photos of the process anywhere?

31.01.2015 15:03, Bianor

Here are a couple of photos. The size of the objects is approximately 0.7 mm wide and 0.4 mm high. Unfortunately, it is not yet possible to get epipharynx with guaranteed preservation of the head and without soaking in alkali. I would also like to consult about the home method of staining. Maybe there are some improvised materials for staining chitin? Iodine? Potassium permanganate? Because epipharynx (as, indeed, bursae in small butterflies) is almost transparent and its preparation is very inconvenient, and it is not easy to get branded eosin.

A little off topic. Has anyone ever encountered genital injuries in butterflies?

Idaea biselata. Half of the genitals were left-one valva, part of the saccus, and a damaged aedeagus.:

She's the same. One valva is damaged:

The usual thing. Most often there are broken off tips of the lips. Break off during storage, catching on the edge of the box.

The ones I showed were made from fresh material. They were almost certainly injured while they were still alive.

But I want to ask: what do people do with such photos of drugs?

Because there is little experience, and there is no one to advise and I can't find a detailed description of the process. Again, I have not yet built myself a normal knife for such procedures. However, for eupithecia, the bursa and the location of the seminal duct are important.

Experience is a complex matter. It depends on what you're talking about. There are several people who have made more than 10 or even 15 thousand drugs, while remaining at a poor level. They've been spoiling the material for decades, and when it's pointed out to them, they get offended.

The rule is simple for all groups-genilia separately, abdomen-separately. The abdomen must not be discarded.

You don't need a knife for this procedure. Only a pair of pyaterka tweezers and an auxiliary dissecting needle. If necessary, I can describe the process.

What about him? For different species in different ways:)

If you keep the abdomen intact, what should you leave it with, the abdomen or the bursa? In your photo, if I understand correctly, the abdomen is also divided into segments. Is it possible to keep all the covers of the abdomen intact with the ostium attached to them? What should I do if I need an image of the 8th sternite, like Eupithecia or scopula? What should I do with the tympanic organ?

What is wrong with these drugs?
