Information about books by Vadim Chikolovets on the website http://sites.google.com/site/tshikolovetsbooks/

Yesterday I received two reviews from Germans who bought our books. It was very pleasant. Our luminaries react more cautiously, because they know the fauna better... but overall, the response is very good.
I am very happy. I started making this book 10 years ago... and so... Although I haven't held it myself yet

25.01.2010 17:26, Sergey Rybalkin

Forumchane, what do you think about the "Catalog of lepidoptera of Russia", a good book? I'm thinking about buying it.

25.01.2010 23:41, Yakovlev

And what to think about. It costs 600 rubles...
A good book, not devoid of flaws. Here you can see the entire list for Dagestan...
I believe that anyone who deals with butterflies should have it on the shelf. Vaughn looked to the right - there is a yellow one. I'd kill for the cover design, of course...
And so very informative...

Well, imagine that you are a dentist. Do you need Pliers For Pulling Teeth or not?

This is a working tool, if you do faunistics in Russia - it is not clear how to do without it on the shelf smile.gif

26.01.2010 1:31, Yakovlev

For the collector, it is useful, because there is a spelling, author, year... This book is a definite stage. A lot of work has been done and the further away from the daytime, the less it "burns". Micro, bombitzes - written responsibly. There are a lot of faunal problems, but in 10 years we will publish more... and there will also be shortcomings.

26.01.2010 1:37, Vlad Proklov

I have just received the third volume of the Witt Catalog (Apameini 1).
It seems to be necessary to criticize everything - and so offhand and you will not understand why... smile.gif

If "Noctuidae Europaeae" claims to be a thorough analysis of the European fauna - then this is pure systematic revision, there are no distribution maps (I'm a cartomaniac, just show them to me - I'll find something to bite smile.giffor ) - so I'll be kind...

One thing that immediately catches your eye is that the butterflies were photographed against a different background than they are shown on. Such blunders of color reproduction instantly catch your eye! Well, what is it?! Is it really impossible to prick up to take pictures on a white background, since they will still be on it in the book?! And so - well, it looks unnatural, at least cut it!

But taking into account the comments of Herman Hacker to the corresponding volume of NE, there is no longer any kind of Abromias, in short - another guide to which it is not a sin to refer.
Bravo, no fooling around!

26.01.2010 1:51, Vlad Proklov

in some sections, the book just burns. I bought it, put it on the shelf, and forgot. in everyday use, due to the peculiarities of writing, it is absolutely useless. is that as a checklist of butterflies of Russia with a very conditional reference to the territories..

Stanislav smile.gif
Nizhny Novgorod region -- by micro -- untilled field smile.gif
You'll do it-I'm ready to help as much as I can!
And only then will you be able to evaluate the "Catalog"!

Yes, everything is done correctly. You need to take photos on a gray background, and if necessary, take them out on a white one for printing.

In the best examples of modern literature - they pull out on the same gray.
And this is the only right way!

I plan to do micro. more precisely, ecoforides. I liked them... Along the way, I think I'll collect everything.

According to ecophorids - 20 species is the ceiling for the Nizhny Novgorod region (this is a small family, if we take this group in the modern sense, without any depressariids, etc.). You will not be able to catch them alone smile.gif
But among them there are also cute ones, this is a yes smile.gif

Here you need to be aware of the subtleties of printing, probably a large area of color (gray) surface is not profitable. The book will be golden.

26.01.2010 2:57, Vlad Proklov

Subtleties:
Third Witt (white background) -- subscription price with delivery = 125 euros.
Norwegian Macrolepidoptera (gray background) -- 50 something.

All of them are golden in some way...

26.01.2010 3:04, Proctos

confused.gif Well, then I don't understand anything. Maybe someone who prepared the book for publication will clarify the pricing policy for color illustrations. I also have to print large volumes of photos, and all on a gray background.

26.01.2010 3:08, Vlad Proklov

Yes, I think this is now just not a criterion if the book smile.gif
Subject matters more for the size of the audience, and therefore revenue smile.gif

26.01.2010 3:26, Proctos

I don't think it will get to the book. Most likely, I will give it to Zootaxa in the monograph. Fast, cheap and angry!

If you could still pay with a card in Zootaxa and get everything you want - there would be no price for this zootaxa!
The main thing-a good example - that is: Witt's "Entomofauna" - sells (including by card) new articles for pennies, distributes old ones for free - but no. The thirsty ones are still alive. Boom wait until they get smarter or go broke...

26.01.2010 3:51, Proctos

What is Entomofauna's website?
Well, wait for the ruin of Magnolia Press (publisher Zootaxa in New Zealand) will have a long time! smile.gif They have already switched to a daily edition of the issue, plus 5-10 monographs per month. I think that the profitability there is all right. By the way, any publication can (theoretically) be obtained for free, just write to the author and ask for a pdf.

Yes there it is:
http://www.biologiezentrum.at/biophp/de/entomofauna.php

And I can wait a long time ))) and while - of course, I get articles from authors. Vladimir Kononenko, in particular - a wonderful person, shares articles only in this way!

Update: I am very unpleasantly surprised that the site "Entomofauna" does not give more old articles...
However, I am ready to send everything I want by mail to any suffering person smile.gif
I'm thrifty))

Update 1: Wah, they are already giving back and forth, shaitans!

29.01.2010 14:10, Guest

feel free to contact me:)

And how is the information on families presented in the book? In the form of "naked" checklists? Is the book illustrated?

Thank you.

29.01.2010 16:51, Coelioxys

I don't understand what "served" means, but today Federer served well in the match with Tsonga, I understand that.. About illustrations. There is such a thing as title turnover, read it...

29.01.2010 18:07, Frantic

Thank you so much for your VERY informative answer.

PS: That's what touches me. Western publishers and serious bookstores for some reason do not bother to answer the question of a potential buyer. And here - "sparkling" humor instead of a response to the case.

And I don't have to imagine "how books are made." To appreciate the taste of food, you don't have to be a cook (c). About "treated with polite treatment" - what to do if the "bourgeois" not only try to correctly serve the goods, but also do not forget about the simplest rules of good taste.. For the information provided this time-thank you.

It seems that such a method of presenting information as a list of species on paper has outlived its usefulness. It would be better to make a website on the fauna of the Lazovsky z-ka, and add information to the list as you study, and a photo gallery is mandatory.

30.01.2010 14:18, Coelioxys

Guys! I do not force anyone to buy, and I am not going to praise the product either, especially with bourgeois rules of good taste. If potential customers are so relaxed that they need to be "fed, watered and put to bed" in addition to the book itself, then this, sorry, is past our "store":)

As for the list of species on paper. You don't quite understand the subject, this is a nature reserve, and the biota intensification is in the first place there, and this checklist is much more informative and scientific than all the annals of nature, the maintenance of which (and on paper) is the responsibility of the scientific department of any nature reserve. And to say that it is better, so it is easiest, the same thing we constantly hear about our Determinant-they say, not everything was included, not completely distributed, etc. It remains only to wish all the same at least once to visit the skin of the "cook", then for sure you will become much more tolerant of many things.
I will be happy to buy a book on insects of any reserve that you can master or look at the website with a constantly updated list of species and a gallery of photos:)

A book on the biodiversity of the Tigirek Nature Reserve, dedicated to its 10th anniversary, will soon be published. This is a titanic work. When there is 1 entomologist working, who has to pick up all the reports, contact the authors, and put it all together. Biota inventory is the most important thing. Lepidoptera of the Ilmen region and invertebrates of the Sokhondin Region were published, and much was published in the Bastak region. Everything is on my shelf. Well on the third rack i.e.
I've already ordered some Lazovsky zap insects. And collections on Sakhalin and Moneron. Throw me information that comes out where - I buy almost everything where there is about butterflies. And how else to work? I don't understand. I would sit in ZINA where at least a lot of things flock together... And here, if you don't make a fuss yourself, there will be no important published information. For me, the argument - we didn't have such a book, we didn't know it was published - is the most stupid argument. Unless, of course, these are extremely endemic collections of conferences, works of all sorts of teachers, universities... then yes. You won't find it!
People publish books or articles in normal journals, and participate in specialized conferences, and not in such as the Mountains and Highlanders of Altai, where everything from applied crafts of Kumandins to butterflies is okr. Kobdo.

to Yakovlev: what about the bulavoustykh of Mongolia/Altai-Sayan? Did I answer that?
to Coelioxys: I'll make an agreement with the transfer, and I'll write to you as soon as I make an agreement.

This is just a wish for the future, anyway, all databases are steadily sliding into the network. The same applies to lists of nature reserves ' faunas.
