Lymantria (Spinotria) grisescens (Staudinger, 1887)
The nominative subspecies is known only from Russia-Primorye (most likely it is found in North Korea and North-Eastern China, but I don't have any data). The subspecies goergneri has been described from central China. The Japanese population of bantaizana, assigned in 2004 by A. Schintlmeister to this species as the third subspecies, was restored to the species status by the Americans in 2007.

The subgenus Pantria (Shintlmeister, 2004) includes three species, two of which are found only on New Guinea Island, and the third, L. panthera, is widely distributed in Southeast Asia.

The subgenus Sarantria (Shintlmeister, 2004) contains 6 species distributed in Indochina and the islands of Southeast Asia. The largest number of species occurring sympatrically (4!) is found on the island of.Sumatra.

The most common type of subgenus. The nominate subspecies is found on the Sunda Islands. In the eastern Himalayas and Indochina, it is represented by the subspecies thomasi.

But I didn't see any differences at close range. No. Maybe they have very different underpants? I doubt it, though...

Differences between these two subspecies:
1. Seabirds are larger than European
ones 2. the black spot on the forewings of the nominative subspecies is usually poorly developed (here is a link to the male in this topic: http://molbiol.ru/forums/index.php?showtop...dpost&p=1416078 you can also look at the Moscow region here: http://insectamo.ru/hete/99-hete/lymantrii...ornis-l-nigrum)
In this case, there is a somewhat unusual pair from Dagestan (very large and with a well-developed spot). But in my opinion, there is no reason to assign them to any subspecies other than the nominative one.

I proceed from what I see. The differences are clearly too weak. And then, what about the clinal variability? I am sure that the signs are gradually changing from Europe to the Far East. Are there insurmountable obstacles that make gene exchange processes impossible?

I proceed from what I see. The differences are clearly too weak. And then, what about the clinal variability? I am sure that the signs are gradually changing from Europe to the Far East. Are there insurmountable obstacles that make gene exchange processes impossible?

To answer this question, simply look at the Catalog of Lepidoptera Russian Federation, edited by S. Yu. Sinev, 2008 edition. We find the species number 8388 (Arctornis l-nigrum Müller, 1764). The view is marked with an asterisk, and therefore there are notes to it. We find on page 341 a note: "Subspecies ussuricum Bytinski-Salz, 1939 (Far East)". Next, we look at which Russian regions this type is given: Kaliningrad, European North-Western, European Central, European Central-Chernozem, Middle Volga, Volga-Don, West Caucasus, East Caucasus, South Ural, Pribaikalsky, Zabaikalsky, Middle Amur, Lower Amur and Primorsky.
So, there is clearly a significant gap in the range between the Southern Urals and the Baikal region.
In general, breaking spears because of subspecies is a thankless task. This group has a lot of problems at the species level. For example, what flies in the south of China and in Indochina - God only knows. This is an interesting question. By the way, a new "twin species" Arctornis kohistana de Freina, 1987.

The catalog is already outdated, outdated..
Here everything is clear, as I thought-a synonym for it. Just like the others.

Lymantria (Porthetria) obfuscata (Walker, 1865)
It is widely distributed in the mountains of Northern India (Kashmir, Ladakh, Himchal Pradesh and Pinjab), Pakistan and Afghanistan. It was specified for Afghanistan in 2004 (Schintlmeister, 2004). At the same time, in his work, Schintlmeister noted a lighter tone of color in the males of the Afghan population, linking it with a more arid climate. Females with strongly reduced wings are not capable of flight. It is considered a pest of fruit trees. The biology and ecology of this species were described in detail by the Americans in 2007 (Pogue and Schaefer, 2007). They approached the study of this species from the point of view of the danger of its introduction to the United States with a subsequent population outbreak and paid great attention to describing the preimaginal stages of the species and the features of its ecology and behavior. A large series of tracks has been developed. A detailed description of the caterpillars and their image is provided. DNA analysis and analysis of the chemical composition of pheromones of this species were carried out, which confirmed its species status. (Previously, hybrids of L. obfuscata X L. dispar were obtained several times in the laboratory, and many researchers considered them conspecific.) The article also notes that males are active during the daytime.
