How long will the pupal stage last for purchased cocoons?

Nuuuu, they asked.
it all depends on when the caterpillar pupated. Probably not earlier than 2 weeks after pupation.
So, from whom you bought it, ask them. wink.gif

Well, there will be no surprises like with atlas cocoons?

and what are your special interests with atlases?

10.04.2012 16:29, Entomon

and what are your special interests with atlases?

I mean the time of the pupal stage, the cases of diapause, and the highly dispersed time of exits from the adult pupae.

And another question, isn't it time to get the Saturnia pyri cocoons out of the refrigerator? Yesterday, the buds on the plants began to bloom.
Goal: getting offspring.

I was presented with an atlas pupa, on September 5, the pattern appeared, how long do I still have to wait for hatching?
picture: IMG_3407.JPGpicture: IMG_3409.JPG
P.S. the pupa has a dent, most likely obtained when it was still very soft. Will it hurt the butterfly?picture: IMG_3412.JPGpicture: IMG_3413.JPG

Where are the males?

Where are the males?
smile.gif

And with the males there was a hitch. Apparently, both females were not only fertilized, but also laid their entire supply of eggs. For at least two days after the capture (May 8-9), I did not see any males arriving or eggs being laid. frown.gif On the third day (May 10 - the weekend was already coming to an end, it was time to return to the city), I simply killed both butterflies, spread them out and put them in the collection. In general, the attempt to attract males was very unsuccessful. frown.gif

Nevertheless, at the last forum congress, I purchased several female pupae in order to try to catch male pavonias again in the next field season by attracting them to the smell of female pheromones. In this case, the females will be brood, and therefore guaranteed not to be fertilized, and, as it seems to me, in this case, attracting males should not be a problem.

In this regard, I would like to clarify: on what days (maybe at the end of April-? or in early-or mid-May -?) and, equally important, at what time of day (it is clear that during the day, but when, at what time) should we expect the most active summer of males?

Males do not fly to the light frown.gif.
Males are most active in the south of Ukraine, from 14 to 17. But the unfertilized female was also attacked at dusk.
In nature, I observed the approach of males to the female who had just emerged from the pupa. Then, when the process of spreading the wings is underway, the males do not react, and after the wings get stronger, the males begin to fly up again. As soon as mating occurs, the other males are blown away by the wind. smile.gif
Don't let them mate if you want to catch males. Males can fly to an unfertilized female for several days.
